Application filed a rneaiaia.v Serial No. 763,097. 1
Be it known that'I; DAVID citizen of the United States, residing at Richtom'in the county of Perry and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the fol lowing' is a. specification.
This invention relates to plows of that class which are generally known as hillside plows and which are equipped with a piv-x otally and reversibly supported member constituting a double share having right and left hand mold boards.
The present invention has for its ob ect to simplify and improve the construction and operation of this class of devices and to furnish an implement ,which may be constructed at a small expense.
A furtherobject of the invention is to so construct the improved plow that the reversible share maybe applied to and used in connection with a bifurcated standardof ordinary construction, such as is used 111' connection with scrapers, scooters and the like.
A further object of the invention is to produce an implement of the class described including a spring'which assists in'reversing the share to present a rlght hand or a left hand plow, as may be required.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the sam consist in'the improved construction and no'vel arrangement and combination of parts which will hereinafter be fully deseribedand particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanyin drawing has been illustrated a simple an preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, butthat changes, alterations and modifica- -tions within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a plow constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a rear view, showing the plow in the act of being'turned or reversed. Fig. 3 is a side elevation taken from the side opposite to' that shown in gorresponding parts in the several figures" are denoted by like characteraof reference.
The plow beam 1 having the handles a and the standard 3 mar be of any preferred "J type, the standard being preferably bifurcate'd 'and'provided at its-lower'end with a CooHRAN, a
bloclror foot piece it-said standard being also connected with the rear end off the beam by a suitable brace 5. The reversible share A, which is connected with the standard by a bolt or pivot member 14, preferably con sists of an integral web presenting points 6 and mold boards 7 of any desired shape,
' saidplows and mold boards at the two ends of the reversible share being, respectively,
of the right and the left hand type, al-' though in some instances an ordinary turning plow may be formed at one end and a sub-soiler at the other end of the share, or the construction may be otherwise varied. By reason of the share being formed of an integral web which is not cut out or slot-ted intermediate the wings of the mold boards,
the said implement will shed'the dirt in a more satisfactory manner, and the imple- Patented DeoQ-BG, 1913. v I
nicnt will be found much less liable to clog I than were thewings of the mold board struck out from the metallic web; The
point 8 where the tips of the mold boards converge is vprovided with an ttaching member, such as an eye bolt 9 tha? rearwardly' in parallel relation to the axis of the bolt or pivot member 14, and the purpose of which will be'presently made apparent.
Fulcrumed onpne sideiface of thebeam near the rear end of the latter is a lever 10 which normally lies beneath one of the handles and which is provided at the end of one of its arms with a handle 11, whereby it may be manipulated. The other arm of the lever is provided with a spur 12 which is guided through the bifurcated standard and which is adapted to engage one of the apertures 13 formed in the share 7 at diametrically opposite sides of the axis of the bolt or pivot member 14-, whereby said share is pivoted on the block or foot piece 4. By means of the spur 12 the reversible share may be securely of the spring. The lever 10 is actuated by I means of an independent spring 17 inter posed between said lever and one of the plow extends handles, and whereby the spur 12 of said lever will be maintained in engagement with one of the apertures 13, as will be readily understood, and as clearly seen in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
When it is desired to reverse the plow, the handle of the lever is manipulated to move said lever against the tension of the spring 17 suificiently to disengage the spur 12 from the aperture 13k The plow share is then tilted to the position shown in Fig. 2, this tilting being readily effected by the gravity of the plow beam and standard which will operate against the tension of the spring which is thereby tensioned as the convergence of the mold boards passes beneath the lower end of the standard. When a dead center has been passed 'the tension of the spring will be exerted to assist in restoring the reversible share to an operative position, the operation of reversing the share being thus accomplished very easily and with little manual strain on the part of the operator.
By reason of the rearwardly extending eye bolt 9, the lower end of the spring will be sufficiently spaced from the standard to clear the latter without interference While the reversal is being accomplished.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In a plow of the character described, a beam having a bifurcated standard provided Copies of this patent may be obtained for hand lever fulcrunied on the beam and hav--:
ing a spur engaging an aperture in the reversible share, and a coiled spring connecting the reversible share with the beam.
2. A plovi including a beam having a bifurcated standard provided with a foot piece, a reversible share having right and left hand mold boards provided with apertures, a pivot member whereby the reversible share is mounted on the foot piece, the apertures in the share being at. opposite sides of and equidistant from the axis ofthe pivot member, an attaching member extending rearwardly from the convergence of the mold boards in substantially parallel relation to the axis of the pivot member, a spring connecting the attaching member with the beam adjacent to the rear end of the latter, a hand lever fulcrumed on the beam and having a spur guided between the side members of the bifurcated standard and engaging an aperture in the'share, and a? actuating spring for said hand lever.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
