Be it known that 1, Answers LOUIS CAME, a citizen of the French Republic, and resident of Paris, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sparkmg Plugs with Removable Electrodes and Gentral Telescoping Electrodes, of which the following is a specification. D
This invention has for its object a sparking plug in which one of the electrodes is mounted in a removable manner for the purpose' of allowing of the cleaning of the plug, being carried out rapidly and easily, while the central electrode is constructed in such a manner that the effects of its lengthening under the action of the heat to which it is subjected are annihilated.
The invention besides relates to various arrangements which allow the electrode to be seen and to produce even, when the motor is running, a break of the circuit for the purpose of controlling the supply and the intensity of thc current, the said break being adapted to be permanent or not.
In the accompanying drawings, given by Way of example: Figure 1 shows a longitudinal axial section of one form of embodiment of the invention; Fig 2 in a cross sec tional view of same on line A-A of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective vie w of the reniovable electrode and the c rresponding end of the plug; Fig. 4 is a lo gitudinal axial section of a form of embed ment in which the hollow central electrode is rendered visible so as to allow of the current being controlled; Fig. 5 is'a similar vfiew of a sparking plug the broken central electrode being solid;
Fig. 6 also shows a longitudinal section of a sparking plug with a hollow central electrode; Fig. 7 shows a longitudinal section of a part of a sparking plug provided with a controlling device.
The sparking plug shown by Figs. 1 to 3 is formed'of a body 1 adapted to'be screwed into the wall 2 of the cylinder of the motor and, in which an insulating member 3 is freely mounted, the central electrode 4 being mounted along the center line of said memb r 3. The central electrode is made of two parts 4 and 5 the first of which is mounted in the manner just described while the second part is carried by van insulating washer 6 screwed into a sleeve 7 which is itself screwed into the aforesaid body 1. so as to avoid breaking the latter when the .sleeve is screwed in position. The electric connection between the two parts 4 and 5 of the central electrode is secured by means of a tube 9 having the shape of a nut at one of its ends so as to be adapted to be'screwed on the corresponding screw threaded end of the part 4 of the central electrode, while the opposite end of the tube 9 is open. so as to allow the part 5 to penetrate therein in frictional engagement with thetube 9 and to produce a rel tive telescoping motion when the tube 9 islen'gthened by the action of the heat. The niter electrode 10 is ring shaped and when the plug is put together applies itself on the inner end of the body of the sparking plug where it surrounds the inner end of the @entral electrode 4;. The ring 10 is connected with another ring 11, inserted between H e cylinder 2 and the body 1, by means of webs 12 engafging suitable grooves 13 of the body 1. The ring 11 is inwcbs 12 adapted t) engage grooves 13 provided in any desired number in the body 1. The sparking plugwhich has just been described is secured in position in the same manner as the ordinary sparking plugs after the removable elebt-rode has been engaged on the body 1. For cleaning purposes, it Will be suiiicient to remove the sparking slug whereafter the electrode It) falls off by tself or may be very easily remdvcd by hand owing to the fact that it is only held in position by the tightening of the plug itself on the cylinder. It will thus be b'eadily seen that, as pointed out at the begi-1ning of this specification, the effects of the lengthening of the central electrode are annihilated as when the tube 1) is expanded, it simply slides on the part 5 of the electrode.
In the form of embodiment shown by Fig. 1;, the stuffing box sleeve 7 is apertured as shown at 14 and is lined with a tube 15 made of glass, mica or any other incombustible, transparent substance so as to allow of the central electrode being seen and of its insulation being complete. The central electrode'is, like in the form of embodiment described above, composed of two parts 4 and 5 connected with each other by means of a tube 9 in which the part 5 is adapted to perform a telescoping movement. The in sulating washer 6 which is screwed on the carry differently shaped;
sleeve 7 and through which the part of the central electrode is adapted to slide is provided at its upper end with a cam device formed by a small sleeve 16 carrying at its upper end a'ring 17 in which two crosswise arranged grooves 18 and 19 are "arranged which form right angles with each other and have a different depth. These grooves are adapted to receive a wedge shaped metal piece 20 carried by an insulating washer 21 which surrounds the part 5 of the electrode on which it is adapted to slide. The said washer 21 is mounted on an upper tubular extension 22 of the piece 20 on a nut 23 above which there is a jam nut 2 both nuts being scrc wed on part 5 of the electrode; the latter is also screw threaded at its lower part and carries in this place a nut 25 on which a spiral spring 26 bears, the opposite end of spring 25 bearing noon the lower surface of the insulating washer 6. It will be readily seen that when the nut 23 is screwed on, the spring 26 is compressed and that thus the position of part 5 of the central electrode may be adjusted with reference to the tube 9 and to the part 4. Furthermore, when the wedge shaped member 20 is placed into the less deep groove 18, the part 5-is withdrawn from the tube {land a break or gap occurs,
and gap sparks will be produced. \Vhen the motor works normally, the part 5 penetrates intothe tube 9 owing to the engagement of the member 20 into the groove 19. In a so constructed sparking plug, when the break, or gap is produced, one has as a consequence two sparks viz the passing spark by which the passage of the current from one part of the electrode to the other takes place and the lighting spark which is produced at the end of the sparking plug.
The interrupted central electrode may be entirely solidas shown by Fig. 5 or entirely hollow as shown by Fig. 6.
lviour'ited on the sleeve 7 of the sparkingplug shown by Fig. 7 is an apertured sleeve or lantern 80, the bottom of which is passed through by the male part 5 of the central electrode the upper end of which has been screw threaded so as to be able to receive the nut 31 which holds the parts 7 and together The lantern 30 is lined on its inside with glass or another incombustible transparent material; it is provided above the upper edge of the glass member with a shoulder 33 on which an insulating plug 33 rests into the central part of which a metallic bushing is screwed which is provided with an axial hole 34 through which passes a rod carrying at its lower end a head 36 between which and the stopper 33 a spring 37 has been interposed. The said rod is held in position by two nuts 38 between which the conductor 39 has been secured. The bushing 40 of the plug 33 has its upper annular edge cut away according to two diameters and at different depths so as to form notches 4:1 and 42 adapted to receive a inserted between the nuts 38 and the notched edge of the said bushing. The plug 33 is held on the lantern by a nut When the tooth 43 is inserted in the deepest not 41 and the device which has in eenl' stescribed, is mounted on the sparking plug, the head 36 of the rod bears on theupper end of the central electrode 5 so as to allow of the tree passage of the current. If it is desired to control the current or if it is desired to ascertain if the intensity ofthe current is sufficient, the disk 44 is grasped, raised and rotated about 90 so as to cause. its toot-h 43 to engage the shallower notches 42 wherein it is held by the action of the spring 37. in this position, the head 36 which first had been removed from the electrode '5 has been unable to come again back into contact with said electrode. The gap between the said two members has produced the formation of a disruptive or passing spark which by its presence discloses the existence of current in the sparking plug.
Having now fully described my said invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A spark plug comprising a body, a removable electrode provided with an in wardly extended end portion, said electrode engaging the outer lower portion of the body of the plug and held in position thereby when the body is seated in the wall of a cylinder and a second electrode comprising two telescopic sections mounted in the body, the inner one of said sections co'ciperating wit-h the inwardly extended end portion of the removable electrode.
2. In a sparking plug, the combination with the body of the plug formed with grooves and a removable electrode comprising two rings connected by a plurality of webs, said Webs engaging the grooves'and being held therein when the plug is in position in a cylinder, one of the rings serving tooth 43 carried in the lower surface of an insulating disk 4.4:

4. In a sparking plug the combination with the body of the plug of a removable outer electrode, a telescoping central electrode comprising a movable part, a stationary part and a telescoping tube sliding iso ncsaaoi over said movable part and screwed on said stationary part, and means for withdrawing the said movable part of the central electrode from the said tube so as to pro duce a gap. 5. The combination with a sparking plug havin 'a central electrode of a device adapt ed to ie connected with said plug and comprising a rod connected with the current supply conductor, a member secured. to the said plug, a plurality of notches having different depths provided in said member, a tooth carried by the said rod and adapted to engage said notches so that when it engages the deepest notches'the said rod is in contact With'the said central electrode of the plug while when the said tooth engages the shallower notches, the said rod is removed from said electrode whereby the current is forced to pass from the one to the other.
6.
