To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. "WILsON, a subject of the King of Great Britain, res1ding at Vancouver, in British Columbia and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Molding De vices, of which the following is a spec1fication.
The invention relates to a measuring device, and more particularly to the class of lard or butter molders.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character in which apredetermined quantity of lard or butter can be extracted from a bulk without requiring hand molding and the weighing of the quantities extracted.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character in which bulk substances can be cut and measured into predetermined quantities possessing determined pounds weight thereby avoiding the necessity of handling the substance in the ordinary well-known manner. g
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character in which substances in bulk and contained within a receptacle can be extracted in a ready and convenient manner in predetermined quantities possessing the requisite shape and determined weight in a single operation.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, the device comprises a mold box 5 having an open end 6, and a closed end 7, the body of the box being of square formation in cross section throughout its length and has formed on or fixed to the closed end 7 there of a central hollow stem or column 8, the inner end communicating with the box 5 through an aperture 8, while the opposite closed end 9 has a central perforation 10 alining with said aperture 8, both of which being designed to receive a reciprocating plunger rod 11, formed at its outer end with a handle 12, and at its opposite inner end with a piston head 14, the latter being held fast on said rod by means of collars 13, the piston head being designed to work within the mold body 5 longitudinally throughout the extent thereof. The plunger rod is formed at its outer end with a head 15, which prevents the pulling of the handle 12 therefrom when the said rod is being manually operated.
Formed in the hollow stem or column 8 at one side thereof is a longitudinally disposed guide slot 17 and on one edge adjacent thereto of the column or stem 8 at the outer face thereof is provided a plurality of graduations 18, adapted to cooperate with an indicator lug or pin 19, formed on the rod 11 and projected into the slot 17, so that on adjustment of the plunger head 14 within the body 5 a predetermined quantity of solid material can be extracted from the said body and its pound weight or fraction thereof readily determined, the device being especially useful for weighing or measuring lard or butter.
Surrounding the hollow stem or column 8 and spaced from the closed end of the mold body or box 5 is a stationary collar 20, while between the latter and the said closed end 7 of the body or box 5 is a displaceable sleeve or collar 21, the same being formed at diametrically opposite points with laterally extending pivot lugs 22 engaging in levers 23 and 24.- respectively at the crossing point thereof, the same being formed with cutting limbs or blades 25, extending thereof and terminate in beveled free ends" 26 at the open end of the body or box, the
levers 23 and 24 being provided with loop handles 27 at their outer ends whereby the cutting limbs or blades 25 can be moved toward or away. from each other for the scraping of material from the outer sides of the body or box 5, after the same has been inserted within the material for the collection of a quantity therefrom. Surrounding the hollow stem or column 8 ,between the collar 20 and the sleeve21 is a coiled expansion spring 28 which is designed to normally sustain the cutting limbs or blades 25 in open position as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
Fixed to or integral with the closed end 7 of the body or box 5 and thestationary collar 20 and rising from'the closed end 7 are upwardly converging toothed racks 29, meshing with rotatable gears 30 journaled upon pintles 31 havingtheir bearings in the levers 23 and 24 respectively the said gears 30 being designed to travel upon the racks 29 on the swinging of the levers 23 and 24 toward each other, so that when the cutting blade or limbs 25 are being swung to the position shown in Fig. 3 the beveled ends 26 will not be caused to protrude beyond the open end of the body or box 5 for a purpose presently described.
Formed'in the beveled ting blade 25 n are alining apertures 32, through which are passed cutting wires 33, which extend transversely or crosswise between the pairs of the said cutting blades 25 and 'the ends of said wires being ex-- tended upwardly and inwardly with respect to said blades 25 and are suitably fastened in notches 34, formed in the inner ends of the said blades. Thus, in this manner it will be seen that the cutting wires 33 will be sustained taut for severing a predetermined amount of material which has been previously ejected from the body or box 5 through the open end thereof, and also enabling the formation of a straight end to the quantity of material molded within the body or box 5 of the device, as the cutting wires 33 will pass across the open end 6 of the said body or box at right angles to the longitudinal axis thereof.
Adjustably mounted upon the hollow stem or column 8 is a s lit collar-35 the ends of which are forme with beveled edges 36 providing a V-gap 37 between the ends of the said collar, so that the lug or pin 19 will enter the said gap 37 when the same is positioned on the column or stem as shown in Fig. 3, and passed through the said gap beyond the collar 35 when it is desired to fill the body ,or box 5 to its full capacity.
At a point medially of the collar 35 is adends 26 of the cut-' justably mounted a set screw 38 whereby the collar can be locked in adjusted posi- 'tion atv a point longitudinally of the collar or stem 8 so as to permit the accurate adjustment of the plunger head 14, within the mold body or box 5 to determine the amount of material to be received therein. This is accomplished in two ways, as will be hereinafter more fully described. First: Should the collar 35 be positioned upon the stem or column 18 as shownin Fig. 1 of the drawings, then the lug or pin 19 is moved into contact with the stationary collar- 20 and body or box 5, thereafter, is forced into the mass of solid material which causes the plunger head 14 to recede within the body or box 5 by the entrance of the material-from the mass until the said lug or pin 19 reaches the point of the smaller end of the gap 37 in the collar 35, whereupon it can be determined with accuracy the quantity of material received within the body or box and to separate such quantity the levers 23 and 24 are operated for swinging the cutting blades 25 toward each other causing the cutting wires 33 to come together and-thereby cut the quantity of material within the body or box from the mass and at the same time permitting the said body or box to be freely withdrawn from the mass with the predetermined quantity retained therein. It is only necessary to press inwardly upon the plunger rod 15 which will eject the predetermined quantity within the box or body 5 therefrom. Second. When the collar 35 is positioned on the column or stem 8 as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and the lug or pin 19 has been brought into contact with the collar 20 prior to the insertion of the mold body or box 5 into the mass of material, the plunger head 14 will be caused to recede within the box or body on the forcing of the same within the said mass of material until such quantity thereof entirely fills the said body or box, it being understood that the lug or pin 19 passes through the gap 37 in the collar 35 so that the latter will not interfere with the receding of the plunger head 14 during the filling of the body or box 5 and thereafter the plunger rod 11 is forced inwardly until the lug or pin 19 reaches the point of the smaller end of the gap 37 in the collar 35, thus ejectin a certain amount of the. material receive within the box or body for retaining a predetermined quantity therein. Now, it is only necessary to operate the levers.23 and 24 causing the cutting wires 33 to'approach each other thereby severing the superfluous material from the predetermined quantity held within the box or body, and thereafter .the said. predetermined quantity is ejected from the box or body 5 a manner as heretofore described.
The collar 35 is only employed to limit the movement of the plunger 11 when fractions of a pound are to be measured by the device, and when one or more pounds are to be measured the collar is not employed, so that the pin 19 is free to move in the slot 17 the desired degree, although the said collar 35 can remain on the column 8, but the plunger 11 is manipulated so that the pin 19 can pass through the split portion of the collar thereby permitting the desired adj ustment of the plunger for the proper'measurement of the material.
In the closed end of the case 5 are formed a plurality of air outlets 38 so that any air contained within the said case on the filling of the same with material may be readily expelled therefrom, thereby permitting the plunger blocks to freely move upwardly within the case.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the construction and operation of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
Arranged at the upper end of the-slot 17 and mounted upon the column 9 is an adjustable. gage device 38 which is arranged in the path of'the pin 19 and is designed to vary the extent of the slot 17 in which the said pin 19 works, the gage 38 being adjusted by means of the set screw 39 so that it may be locked in the desired position.
What is claimed is 1. A molder comprising a receiver having an open and a closed end, means adjustable within the receiver to vary the capacity thereof, means traversing the open end of said receiver for severing the material contained therein from the bulk, an indicator cooperative with said first named means, ad
justable means for determining the location also graduations at one side thereof to cooperate with said indicator, a displaceable element carried by said stem, levers pivotally connected to said element, cutting members operated by said levers and arranged exteriorlv of said receiver, and cutting wires carried at the free ends of said cutting members and adapted to traverse the open end of the receiver on operating the levers.
