Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dee.2`3,1913.
application inea January 9. 1913. seriai No. 740,994.
To f/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK A. KA'rnLnr. aA citizen of the United Stat-es, and a resident of Mount Vernon, in the county ot' Iestchest'er and State of New York, have invented a new and'Improved Damper-Controlling- Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to steam-heating apparatus, and its object is to provide a new and improved damper-controlling device arranged to actuate the damper according to the pressure of the steam generated in the steam-heating; apparatus, to prevent spillingof the water in case ot excess pressure in the steam-heating apparatus, or in case a siphoning action takes place on forming a vacuum in the steam compartment. of the steam-heating apparatus.
For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a pressure tank connected with a source of steam supply and with an expansion tank, a float in the expansion tank and connected with the damper to be controlled, and means governed b v said float for clos- '..ing--the expansion tank at the top and at the time the float is in normal lowermost position or in uppermost raised position.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure l is a sectional side elevation of the damper-controlling device; and Fig. 2 is a plan View of the float.
Within an expansion tank A is arranged 'a float B provided with anupwardlvextending stem' C connected with one end of a lever D fulcrumed on a suitable support E attached to the expansion tank A. The free endof the lever l) is connected by a chain, cable or other flexible connection F with the furnace damper G to be controlled, the damper forming part of the steam heating apparatus. rIhe end ot the lever D connected with the stem C is also connected with a chain. cable or other flexible connec tion F connected with the flue damper G of the steam-heating apparatus, so that both dampers G and G are simultaneously actuated whenever a swinging motion is `@Viven to the lever DV on the rising and falling of the float B.
The bottom of the expansion tank A is connected by a pipe IIwith the lower end of a closed pressure tank I connected at its upper end by a pipeJ with the steam compartment of the heating apparatus, so that steam can pass by way of the pipe J into the tank I to condense therein and to exertA a` pressure on the water contained in ,the tank I and in the tank A, it being understood that the water level in both tanks I and A is normally at the pipe J so that'surplus water can lflow by way of the pipe J back into the steam-heating apparatus. lVhen the water in the tanks A and I is at Vnormal level the floatl B is in lowermost pocontained in the pressure tank I so that the' water is forced up in the tank A to cause the oat B to rise, and in doing so it actuates the lever l) whereby the dampers G and G are moved into more or less closed position to shut ott' therdraft and to reduce the generation of the steam in the steam heatingapparatus with a view to reduce the pressure of the same. lVhen this takes place the water in the tank A falls and rises in the tank I so that the lioat B descends to open the dampers G and G more or less.
Thetank A is closed at the top by a cover A provided with an upper valve seat A2 and an under or lower valve seat A3, the seats A2 and A being in 'register and through the same passes the stem C 'of the lloat B. On the valve stem C is secured a valve K seated on the upper valve seat A2 at the time the float B in lowermost po the float B is in lowerniost position. On the top of the float B is arrangedn valve L adapted to be seated on the under valve seat A3 at the time the float B moves into uppermost position, so that the tank A is closed duringl this time and consequently the water contained in the tank A cannot pass out of the same at the top owing to the closing ot the tank A by the valve L seated on the seat A3.
It will be noticed that by the arrangement described the upward movement of the oat l is limited by the valve L moving onto the seat A3 and at the same time theexpansion tank A4 is closed to prevent the water contained therein from being forced out of the same and spilled by the excess of pressure on the water in the. pressure tank I. When the vfloat B is inI lowermost position the'tank B is closed -by the valve K being seated on the tank A, pipe H. tank I and pipe J into the steam chamber of the boiler to the detriment thereof. It is also understood that, when the oat B rises, the valve K moves off the scat A2 to allowthe air in the upper portion of the tank A to escape` through the registering and now open valve seats A2 and A3. In a like manner, when the float B descends, air can pass through the registering valve seats into the tank A. It wil-l further be noticed that in case of a high steam pressure in the boiler and consequently in the tank I the water in the device cannot be forced out of the same and hence there is no danger of forming an open passage from the boiler to the atmosphere for, the steam to escape from theA boiler, eventually exhausting all the water in the system. j
The lever D is provided with a iow of apertures D any'one of which is adapted to be engaged by a pivot pin D2 engaging one of a row of Iapertures E formed in an upright E2 fulcrumed on a bracket E3 attached to the expansion tank A. One ot the apertures E is engaged by a pin E4 engaging one of a series of apertures E5 held on an arm Es'forming part of the bracket E3. By the arrangement described the lever D can be shifted in'the upright E2 to give more or less throw to the dampers G and Gr and the lever D may be raised or lowered on the upright E2 to set the lever accurately relative to the stem C and the float B. In a like manner a sidewise adjustment of the upright E2 is had on-the arm EG to suit existing condition.
Although the damper-controlling device has been described in conjunction with a steam-heating apparatus, it is evident the.
d evice can be used Jfor hot water boilers, hot air furnaces and similar heating apparatus.
Having Ythus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A damper-controlling device, comprising a pressure tank connected at its upper endV with a source of steam supply, an expansion ltank provided with a cover having registering upper and lower valve seats, a connection between the lower ends of the said tanks, a float in the said expansion tank v trolled, and an adjustable support mount-ed y' on the expansion tank and on which the said lever is adjustably fulcrumed.
2. A damper controlling device comprising a pressure tank connected with a source of steam supply, an expansion tank, a connection between-the lower ends of the said tanks, a float in the expansion tank having an upwardly and eXteriorly extending stem, a lever connected with the upper end of the said stem and having a longitudinal series of apertures, an upright arm having an upper longitudinal series of apertures, a bracket to which the lower end of said arm is fulcrun'ied, a rigid horizontal arm having alongitudinal series of apertures, pivot pins for engagement through selected apertures whereby to adj ustably connect the lever and the upright arm, and the upright arm and horizontal arm and flexible connections between the lever and the dampers to be controlled.
In testimony whereof I have'signed my name to this specification in the presence ot' 4 THEO. G. Hos'rnn, JOHN P. Davis.
