AIR-IDIS'IRIBUTER FOR CENTRAL-DRAFT LAMPS.
Specification of Letters latent.
Patented Dec. 23,1913.
Application filed September 13, 1913. Serial No. 789,613.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VVILLIAM A. PENFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Air-Distributors for Central-Draft Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in--- Figure 1 a side view of an air distributor for central draft lamps constructed in accordance with my invention and shown as located in the upper end of a central draft tube. Fig. 2 a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 an underside view.
This invention relates to an improvement in air distributors for central draft lamps, and is an improvement on the device shown and described in United States Patent No. 529,496 dated November 20, 189st. In the device shown and described in the said patent, a single ring-like deflector was arranged near the top of the distributor between two outwardly thrown ribs or shoulders.
The object of this invention is to provide an air distributor of the type shown in the said patent, which will have all the advantages of that construction, and have the further advantage of supplying a current of air across the top of the flame, so that the flame will be kept down. As heat about the burner increases, the tendency of the flame is to creep up and smoke; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and-particularly recited in the claim.
In carrying out my invention I form the perforated distributor 2 with a closed end 8, and below and near the upper end I locate an upper annular deflecting ring or collar l between outwardly extending annular ribs 5 and 6, and below the ring is a lower annular deflecting collar or ring 7 also located between annular ribs 8 and 9. The space between the two rings is suflicient to include two or more rows of perforations, so that a current of air may pass outward from the central draft tube 10 between the two rings as well as below the lower one and above the upper one. The distributor is supported in the central draft lamp so that the lower ring stands well above the upper end of said central draft tube and out of normal contact with the wick, and so that the air below the lower flange is distributed above the end of the wick. The air distributor may be supported in any desired manner, for instance, as shown in Fig. 1, by slight projections 11 thrown out at intervals and adapted to rest upon the upper end of the central draft tube. Preferably and as herein shown, the upper ring is slightly larger in diameter than the lower ring. By providing two rings three jets of air are thrown outward horizontally against the flame, tending to increase the whiteness of the flame and keep the flame down so that the liability to smoke is somewhat avoided. By employing two rings, a heavier oil may be used than is possible with burners of usual construction.
I claim The herein described air distributor for central draft lamps having its upper end closed and provided near its upper end with an upper air deflecting ring and with a lower air deflecting ring, the sides of the distributor perforated above the upper ring between th rings and below the lower ring, and means for supporting the distributer in the upper end of a central draft tube whereby the lower ring is held out of contact with the wick, and whereby the air passing through the distributer is distributed in three jets.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM A. IENFIELD.
