DRAFT ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. .23, 1 913.
Application filed February 26, 1913. Serial No. 750,925.
To a whom 2'15 may concern:
Be it known that I, BENNIE Dar-IL, citizen of the United States, residing at Brantford, in the county of Eddy and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft Attachments, of which the following is specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a combination two and four horse draft attachment and evener.
The object of this invention is the prov1- sion of a device of this nature which can be readily converted from a two horse draft attachment to a four horse draft attachment and evener.
A further object of this invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character, rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and eflicient in use, readily operated, and so designed that they can be readily applied to any customary form of wagon tongue.
lVith the above and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the slotted strap. Fig. t is a top plan view of the main tongue. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. (3 is a detail perspective view of the lockin tongue. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the mam tongue.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by similar characters of reference, the numeral 10 designates in general a wagon tongue of any customary type, to which are secured the usual hounds 11. As the wagon body forms no part of the invention, it is not thought necessary to illustrate the same and such construction is omitted from the drawings. The rear extremity of the tongue 10 is reinforced at its upper and lower sides adjacent its rear end bv the metallic plates 12, which are connected by the usual bolts 13, which hold the same upon the tongue against displacement. These plates 12 and the tongue 10 are formed with longitudinally extending alining slots 14, while pivoted to the tongue adjacent its rear end,
as at 15, is a strap 16 offset adjacent its rear end, as at 17, in order that the forward port-ion thereof will be spaced slightly above the before described upper plate 12. This strap 16 is provided with a slot 18 adapted to aline with the slots 14.
The rear portions of the tongue 10 and plates 12 are provided with additional slots 19 in which is journaled a grooved pulley 20 engaging with a chain 21 provided at its forward end with a clcvis 22 in which is pivoted the double-tree 23 equipped at its terminals with the customary swingle-trees 2 1.
The bolt which pivotally connects the double-tree 23 and clevis 22, passes through the slots 14 formed in the tongue 10 and plates 12 and slot 18 formed in the strap 16.
Eye bolts 26 are extended through the forward portions of the plates 12 and intermediate portion of the tongue 10 and are connected by a bolt 27 to which is pivoted a locking tongue 28. This tongue 28 is formed in its free extremity with an aperture 29 of a size suflicient to receive the bolt 25. and when the latter is passed therethrough, the double-tree 23 is held against any longitudinal movement within the slots 14: and 18. This tongue 28 is employed when two horses are to be used in connection with the attachment.
A ring 30 is secured to the tongue 10 in spaced relation to its forward terminal and is adapted to connect with the collars of the horses, a portion of which are shown in the drawings. One end of the chain 21 is connected to the clevis 22 as before mentioned, while the latter is secured to an eye formed upon the bolt 21 at the forward ends of the plates 12.
lVhen it is desired to use four horses in connection with the device, the bolt 25 is released from the tongue 28 and slid toward the rear end of the slots 14 and 18 which consequently moves the double-tree 23 a suitable distance to the rear of its initial position. A draft chain 31 is then connected by means of a clevis 32 to the before described chain 21. This draft chain 31 is provided with a. guide ring 33 which passes over the tongue 10 holding the same against any undesired lateral movement relative thereto. This draft chain 31 is equipped with any desired draft attachment 34 by means of which additional horses can be used. It should be noted in this connection that the chain 31 is connected to the chain 21 at a point in the rear various minor changes in the specific details of construction can be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims without departing from or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a slotted wagon tongue, a bolt slidably disposed in said slot, a clevis and draft attachment carried by said bolt, a pulley journaled in said tongue, a flexible connecting member secured at one end to the tongue, the opposite end of said flexible member passing over said pulley and being secured to the clevis, a draft chain connected at one end to the flexible member in spaced relation from its ends, and a draft attachment carried by said chain, as and for the purpose described.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a slotted wagon tongue, a strap secured at one end to said tongue adjacent one end of said slot, the opposite end of said strap being offset and disposed above the slotted portion of said tongue, the offset portion of said slot having a slot therein registering with the slot in said tongue, a bolt slidably disposed in said slots, a clevis and draft attachment pivotally supported by said bolt between the ofl'set portion of said strap and said tongue,
connect'ing' member secured at one end to the tongue, the opposite end of sald flexible member passing over said pulley and being secured. to said clevis, and a draft chain connected at one end to said tongue and at its opposite end to the flexible member in spaced relation from its ends, as and for the purpose described. v
3. In a device such as described, the combination with a, slotted Wagon tongue, a strap having a slot formed therein in registration with the slots secured to the tongue, a clevis slidable between said tongue and straps, a draft attachment supported by the clevis, a bolt passing through the clevis and slots formed in the tongue and strap, a pulley journaled in the tongue, a flexible connecting member secured to the tongue and clevis and passing over the pulley, a plate hinged to the tongue, said plate having an aperture formed therein to receive the bolt and hold the clevis against movement, a draft chain attached to the flexible element in spaced relation from the ends thereof, and a draft attachment carried by said chain.
in testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
