To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN FRANKLIN GEORGE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Camden, Camden county, State or' New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Pen-Making Machines, oi' which the following is a specilication.
One object of this invention is to provide a relatively simple combination olf parts for simultaneously punching a plurality of pen blanks from a strip of sheet metal, it being especially desired that the various punches and dies shall be so mounted as to permit oi' their convenient and accurate adjustment, removal and insertion.
Another object of the invention is to provide a machine of the general character above indicated in which one or more sets of dies or punches shall act simultaneously and ci these one shall serve to positively position the strip of material from which the blanks are to be formed just before others actually cut the blank from said strip; the pierce hole or slot at .what is to be the end of the pen blank being utilized for the reception of the pilot pin.
l also desire to provide a blank forming machine of the above noted class, in which the slitting and hole forming members as well as the blank punch shall have simple and easily manipulated adjusting means whereby their relative positions may be quickly altered to adapt a machine to form different sizes and shapes of blanks; the invention further contemplating the provision of a machine in which there shall be at least two sets of blank forming, slitting and hole punching members designed for simultaneous operation on a blank strip of sheet material.

head, constructed according to my invention, and, Fig. 8 is a portion ot' a strip ot sheet material showing the holes formed in it by the operation of my machine.
In the above drawings 1 represents the frame of any suitable form of punch having a bed 2, and equipped with any desired operating mechanism whereby a head 3 is reciproca-ted in the ordinary guide-ways formed in the frame 1. Two pairs of nip rolls 4f, 5, 6 and 7 are provided to periodically feed a strip of sheet material from which blanks are to be formed between a lower die structure 8, and the upper die structure or head 9, when these two members are moved apart.
Referring more particularly to the upper and lower die structures whose detail design and arrangement of parts constitute my invention, it will be seen that the upper die structure is provided with a boss 10, fitting into the vertically movable head 3 of the machine in which it is rigidly held by a removable clamping piece 11. Formed integral on or otherwise attached to this boss, is a i'lat substantially rectangular plate 12, in each corner of which is provided a lug 13 threaded for the recept-ion of an adjustable trunnion screw 14. Intermediate each pair of lugs 13 there is provided another lug 15 projecting from the side of the plate 12, which is formed to providea bearing for a shaft 16, having its ends recessed to receive the points of the two trunnion screws 14, carried by the adjacent pair ot said lugs 13. Each of the shafts has lixed to it a pair of pinons 17 and also has a nut or other suitablv formed portion4 1S, for the reception of a wrench whereby the shaft may be turned at will.
As shown in Figs. 2 and a, the top or normally upper face of the plate 12 is pro vided with two transversely extending grooves or depressions 19 into one of which opens a pair of elongated slots 20, while into the other open two other elongated slots 21. These four slots are provided for the reception of bolts 22, whose heads lit the grooves 19, so as to be prevented from turning there in, and which pass through slots Q3, in a pair of vflat blocks 24, mounted on the under face of the plate 12. Said slots are elongated in lines substantially at right angles to the lines, in which the slots 2O and 21 are elongated, and the bolts 22 are preferably flattened or cut away on two opposite sides so as to lit into said slots 23 more or less closely.
For adjusting the blocks 24 upon the face of the plate l2 toward and from eachother, I provide each of them with two short racks 25 fixed in such positions that their teeth respectively mesh with the teeth of the pin ions 17 on the shafts 16; the racks having plates 70 at their sides, so that they with the block by which they are carried may be moved laterally by lateral movement of the pinions.
Rigidly fixed to each of the blocks 24 is a main pen blank punch 26 held in place by a pair of set screws 27 and 2S threaded into each of said blocks, so as to engage two faces of the shank of said punch at right angles to each other. This shank with the punch is movable up and down relatively to the block 24 when the Set-screws are loosened, and for performing this adjustment, l provide in the plate 12 an elongated recess 29 whose bottoni or licor is inclined at an angle to the plane of the lower face of said plate, and in this recess mount a wedge 30 formed to engage the end of the punch shank, there being a set-screw 31 threaded into the plate 12 by which said wedge may be longitudinally moved.
1n each of the blocks 24 I form a transversely extending undercut guideway 32 in which is mounted a slide 38 having a nut 34 engaged by an adjusting screw 35 whereby said slide may be longitudinally moved in said guideway. .1n a part 35 of the slide 33 which projects beyond the face of the block 24 l form another guideway in a line substantially at right angles to the line of the guideway 32, and mount therein a second slide 37, carrying a block 38 in such a position that it slides on and bears upon the adjacent fiat face of the block 24. This slide 37 is formed with a slot 39 which is elongated in a line parallel to the line of the guideway and receives a bolt 40 threaded into the part 36 of the slide 33 whereby said second slide is held in any adjusted position. The slide in turn is clamped in any adjusted position by a bolt 41, passing through an elongated slot 42 into the block 24.
The block 8S belonging to each of the slides 37 is recessed for the reception of a combined slitting and punching die 43 held in place by a pair of set- screws 44 and 45, and made with a pair of inclined beveled blades 46 so formed and placed as to cut the side slits in a pen blank. These two blades are spaced apart and between them is mounted the elongated punch 47 for forming the pierce hole of the pen.
One of the blocks 24, in addition to being provided with all of the above noted parts, has a pilot pin 4S formed as part of or attached to a plate 49 fixed to the part 3S of the slide 37 mid-way between the center line of the pen blank punch 26 and the adjacent hole forming punch 47.
At the opposite ends of each of the blocks 24 are end bars 50 held in place by bolts 51 andleach provided with two recesses for the reception of a pair of bolts 52, each having a flattened portion forced or held in engagement with the end of the block 24 by said clamping bars 50. 1n addition to its head leach bolt has a shoulder 53 designed to prevent its moving longitudinally outV of place and serving as an abutment for one end of a spring 54 whose opposite end engages a stripper plate 55; there being one of these plates for each of the blocks 24. The bolts 52 pass through their respective stripper plates, and are provided with jam-nuts 56 forming heads holding the plates in position. These latter have each two openings 37 and 58 to permit of the free passage of the punches 26 and 27 as well as of the cutting blades 46, one of said blocks also having an additional opening 59 for the pilot pin. The lower die structure 8 which is shown in detail in Figs. l, 3 and 5, includes a pair of blocks 60 held to the bolster or lower face plate 2 of the machine by a pair of clamps 62 and their bolts 61. Each of the blocks 60 has three over-hung lugs 63, 64 and 65 together defining a tapering guideway in which is mounted the elongated split lower die 66, for co-action with the main pen punch blank 26. Also carried by each of the blocks 60 is an auxiliary block 67 adjustably held in place by a screw or bolt 68 and having a die 69 formed to coperate with the punch 47. It will of course be understood that the above noted parts of the lower die structure are provided in duplicate for coaction with the punches of the two blocks 24; there being an opening 7 O in the lower die 66 to permit of the free passa-ge of the pilot pin 4S.
lith the above described arrangement of parts properly adjusted and mounted in the machine as shown in Fig. l, a strip X of sheet metal is delivered to the first pair of nip rolls, and by them is periodically fed between the two die structures 8 and 9. The first action of the machine on said strip is to simultaneously form the two edge slits a2 and also the elongated pierce hole x1, after which the nip rolls feed said strip forward such a distance that on the next stroke of the punch head, the slightly tapered pilot pin 48, enters the previously formed hole x1 just after the nip rolls release the strip and properly position the same. Thereafter the punch 47 and slitting blanks 46 form a second pair of slits and another pierce hole. After the nip rolls have again gripped and fed forward the strip, a succeeding stroke of the head cuts out a complete pen blank by reason of the action of the punch 2G, leaving a hole :r2 in the strip X. lt is, of course to be understood that the previously formed slits .r and the pierce hole .r1 are properly placed in the pen blank which is punched from the opening m2 and as the strip X is intermittently fed across the lower die structure it is positioned for each stroke of the machine by the pilot pin t8, which as shown in lig. 3, projects beyond the ends of the punches 36 and 27 so as to enter the previously formed hole m1 before the strip is engaged by either the punches or the slitting blade. lllhe pen blanks are thus cut from parts of the strip which are precisely the same distance apart, and: as said strip is fed across the machine it is finally engaged by the second punch a7 and blades 116, which form a second set of slits a@ and a second hole r1 at the same time that a pen blank is punched out and another hole and a pair of slits are formed by the first set of punches and dies. rlhe various parts are so adjusted that this second set of slits as and the hole acl are midway between the axial lines of two of the holes formed by the pen blank punch 2G belonging' to the other block 211, so that when finally the second pen blank punch comes into action as above noted, it cuts a hole and forms a blank whose center line is midway between the center lines of two other holes or pen blanks as shown in F ig. 8, and the blank so formed has the hole arl and the side slits properly positioned in it. lThereafter the machine continues to form two blanks at each stroke of its head and at the same time to make the holes w1 and the side slits a: for the two other blanks, the strip X being positively positioned prior to each operation of the machine by the pilot pin 18. Each stroke of the head naturally brings the stripper plates into engage ment with some portion of the lower die structure just before the punches 2G and 47 with the slitting blades l-G engage the strip K and as these parts are forced into the latter the springs 54 are compressed as shown in Fig. 3. Thereafter on the upper movement of the head 3 with its attached parts the plates 55 hold the strip X down until said punches are clear of the same, owing to the action of the springs, and thereafter when the plates 55 have again come into engagement with the jam nuts 56, they move upwardly with the other parts attached to the head 3.
For the purpose of adjusting the various parts to form pen blanks of different sizes and shapes, the stripper plates are first removed, a new pen blank punch 26 is placed in the opening of the'block 24, and after being adjusted to the proper height by l means of the wedge 30 and the screw 31, it is rigidly clamped in place by the two screws 37 and 38. 'lhe pen blank punch of the second block 211- is likewise inserted and adjusted and thereafter either or both of the blocks is adjusted longitudinally of the plate 12 by slacking' ofl7 one of the trunnion screws 141 and screwing up the other; it being noted that the toothed racks carry the side plates 70 so that movement of the gears 17 under the action of said trunnion screws necessarily causes longitudinal movement of the block 211 associated therewith. The bolts 22 are naturally slackened olf or loose during the last mentioned operation which permits of the two pen blank punches being so positioned that they both will cut blanks from the strip X with a mininunn waste between their points. lhereafter by turning either or both of the shafts 16 by a suit` able wrench in engagement with the nut 1S, the pinions 17 may be caused to act on the racks 25, to vary the distance between the two pen blank punches 26, so that the center lines of the hole formed by one of them will be midway between the center lines of two successive holes formed by the action of the other. The bolts 22 may now be set up so to clamp the blocks 2d rigidly to the plate 12 and after slacking ell' the bolts Ll1 and lllL belonging te the two slides 83, these latter may be adjusted in their guideways aero-ss the blocks 211 by the operation of the screws 85, so as to bring the punches Ll7 and their associated slitter blades 16 to the proper distance from the pen blank punch 2G. After the bolts 4-1 and 41 have been set up the slide 37 may be moved longitudinally in the part 3G of the slide so as to bring the punch 4l-7 and the slitters associated therewith into the proper posit-ion to form the cuts a' and the hole w1 in the strip X in such positions that they are properly placed on the blank cut out at a succeeding stroke of the punch head 3 by the pen blank punch 26. After such adjustment has been accomplished, each slide 37 is clamped in place by its bolt 40. rlhe dies (3G may now be adjusted by moving the blocks so that they will be properly entered by the punches 26 and thereafter fixing them in place by the clamps (32 and bolts (il. Similarly the dies (it) may be adjusted so as to be properly entered by the punches 17', by slacking olf the screw or bolt G8 and thereafter moving the piece G7 as may be required, whereupon each set screw is again tightened.
l? rom the above it will be noted that the machine may be accurately and quickly adjusted to suit it for the manufacture of pen blanks of widely different sizes and of such conformation as to require dies and punches of different dimensions; the arrangement of parts being such that the machine is rapid and efficient in operation, and at the same time is not likely to easily get out of o-rder or require repairs.
I claim l. The combination in a punching machine; of a head having a punch; a die mounted to cooperate therewith; a pilot pin rigidly mounted on the head and having substantially the form of said punch; and feeding means for moving a body of material through the distance between the punch and the pilot pin at each operation of the machine.
2. The combination in a punching machine; of a head having a punch; a die mounted to cooperate with said punch; a pivot pin in the form of a member rigidly carried by the punch head so as to project below the punch and having substantially the sha-pe of the same; with means for feeding material through the machine.
3. The combination in a pen blank punching machine, of a punch and die for forming the pierce hole of a pen blank; a pilot pin mounted to enter the hole formed by said punch; and a second punch and die mounted to cooperate to cut out the pen blank.
d. The combination in a )en blank forming machine; of a punch 'or forming the pierce hole in a pen blank; a second punch for cutting out a blank; dies mounted to cooperate with said punches; a pilot pin projecting beyond the punches and mounted to enter the pierce hole previously formed by the first punch; with means for intermittently feeding a strip of material between the punches and their dies.
5. The combination in a pen blank forming machine, of two oppositely mounted sets of punches and dies, each including a punch and a die for forming the pierce hole in a pen blank and a punch for cutting out the blank; with a pilot pin formed to enter the previously formed pierce hole made by the punch of one of said sets so as to position a strip of material prior to its being engaged by said punches and dies.
6. rhe combination in a pen blank forming machine; of a supporting structure; a plate adjustable thereon in two directions; means for clamping the plate in any adjusted position; a punch for cutting out pen blanks projecting beyond said plate; means carried by the supporting structure for adjusting the amount of projection of said punch; a second punch for cutting the pierce hole in a pen blank; means for supporting said second punch on the plate; and dies cooperating with said punches.
7. The combination in a pen blank forming machine, of a pair of edge slitters; a pierce hole punch mounted between said slitters; a pilot pin mounted adjacent said punch and formed to enter the pierce hole ing machine,
made thereby; with dies cooperating with said punch and slitters.
S. rlhe combination in a pen blank forming machine; of a pair of edge slitters; a pierce hole punch mounted 'between said slitters; a pilot pin mounted adjacent said punch and formed to enter the pierce hole made thereby; a die cooperating with said punch; a punch for cutting out a pen blank;
a die cooperating with said latter punch; and means for intermittently feeding strip material between the punches and dies; the center line of the pilot pin being mid-way between the center lines of the two punches.
9. rhe combination in a pen blank forming machine, of a punch head; a plate mounted thereon; means for adjustingsaid )late in two directions substantially at right angles to each other; a pen blank punch carried by the plate; means on the punch head for adjusting the amount of projection of said punch; a slide carried by the plate; a second slide carried by the first slide; a pair of slitters and a pierce hole-punch carried on the second slide; and dies cooperating with said punches.
10. The combination in a pen blank forming machine, of a punch head; a plate mounted thereon; n eans for adjusting said plate in two directions substantially at right angles to each other; a pen blank punch carried by the plate; means on the punch head for adjusting the amount of projection of said punch; a slide carried by the plate; a second slide carried by the first slide; a pair cf slitters and a pier e hole punch carried on the second slide; dies cooperating with said two punches; and means for adjusting the relative positions of the two slides.
11. T he combination in a pen blank forming machine, of a punch head; two plates mounted thereon; means for adjusting each of said plates in two lines at right angles to each other; two oppositely set pen blank punches carried respectively by said plates; a pair of edge slitters and a pierce hole punch carried by each plate atv predetermined distances from the other punch thereon; a pilot pin mounted to position a body of sheet material before it is engaged by said punches; and dies mounted to cooperate with the punches.
12. The combination in a pen blank forming machine, of apunch head; two plates mounted thereon; means for adjusting the distance between said plates; two oppositely set pen blank punches carried by said plates respectively; an edge slitter and a pierce hole punch carried by each plate; a pilot pin projecting beyond the punches and carried by one of the plates; with dies mounted to cooperate with said punches.
13. The combination in a pen blank formof a punch head; two plates mounted thereon; means for adjusting the distance between said plates; two oppesitely set pen blank punches carried by said plates respectively; an edge slitter and a pierce hole punch carried by each plate; a pilot pin projecting beyond the punches and carried by one of the plates; dies mounted to cooperate with said punches; and a stripper plate for the punches of each of said plates.
lll. he combination in a pen blank forming machine, of a punch head; a plate mounted thereon; a pen blank punch carried by said plate; a slide adj ustably mounted on the plate; a second slide adjustably mounted on the first slide; a pierce hole punch and a pair of edge slitters mounted on the second slide; a pilot pin also mounted on the second slide; and dies mounted to cooperate with said punches.
15. The combination in a pen blank forming machine, of a punch head; two plates mounted thereon; means for adjusting each of said plates in lines at right angles to each other; a slide on each plate; means for adjusting1 said slides toward and from each other; two other slides respectively mounted on said first slides and adjustable in lilies substantially parallel to each other; a pair of edge slitters and a pierce hole punch on each ot said second slides; two oppositely set pen blank punches mounted respectively on said two plates; means on the punch head for adjusting the amount ont projection of said latter punches; and dies coperating' with the punches.

The combination in a pen-blank formingl machine; of a punch head; two plates mermtcd thereon; means for adjusting each et said plates in two linesl at right angles to cach other; a slide on each plate; means for adjusting the slides toward and from each other; two other slides respectively mounted on said first slides and adjustable in substantially parallel lines; a pair of edge slitters and a piercediole punch on each of said second slides; two oppositely set penbla nl punches mounted respectively on said two punches; means on the punch head for adjusting the amount of projection of said latter punches; dies cooperating with the punches; and two stripper plates mounted to remove material from the punches on each of said plates respectively.
