TONGUE-SWING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 9, 1913.
Application filed March 25, 1912. Serial No. 686,050.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, lVILLIE L. BUCKNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Humboldt, in the county of Gibson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tongue- Swings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an attachment for vehicle running gear and particularly to an improved form of tongue swing by means of which a pivoted tongue is supported from the running gear to relieve the horses of the weight thereof or if applied to a rigid tongue it relieves the tongue connec tions with the front axle of a portion of the strain. To this end I so connect the tonguesuspending member as to distribute the strain thereon throughout the running gear of the wagon in such manner that an undue portion thereof will not be thrown upon any one part.
The essential features of the invention as hereinafter particularly pointed out and claimed will now be described in detail in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the same.
In these drawings Figure 1 is a top plan view; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the accompanying drawings by like reference characters.
The invention is illustrated as applied to a wagon of ordinary construction, the reference numeral 1 designating the tongue connected in the usual manner to the front axle 2 and bolster 3, the usual reach 1 connected to the front axle and bolster by the king bolt 5 and extended to the rear into slidable engagement between the rear axle 6 and the rear bolster 7. The hounds 8 extend in the usual manner from the rigid connection with the rear axle and bolster into slidable engagement with the reach intermediate the two axles, with which it is held in adjusted relation to vary the length of the Wagon by the bolt 9. As thus far described, the parts are of ordinary construction and form no part of the present invention which may be applied to any wagon of ordinary construction after the same comes from the maker or, obviously, the invention may be applied to the wagon during the process of construction.
Connected to the upper face of the tongue intermediate its length as by an eye bolt 10 is a retractile coiled spring 11 the rear end of which is also provided with an eye 12 with which is engaged a hook 13 upon the hound members or to the rear bolster by means of nuts 23 and 24 are braces 25 and 26 which converge to a meeting point where they are provided with a hook 27. Obviously, these braces may consist of separate lengths of rod united at their unction point or they may consist of a single integral rod as shown, and provided at the junction point with an eye 28 to which the hook 27 is connected.
The yoke plate 19 is provided intermediate its two ends with an eye bolt 29 to which is secured one end of a chain 30 which chain may be engaged at any point throughout its length with the hook 27 so as to vary the effective length of said chain to correspond to the adjustment of the wagon length. As the yoke arms 17 and 18 slide within the transom plate the adjustment of the tongue swing will also be capable of regulation by means of the adjustment of the chain 30.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
The combination with a wagon consisting of a reach, front and rear super-structures carried thereon, and a tongue therefor; of a pair of yokes, each consisting of a continuous rod bent mid-way of its ends and crossed to form an eye, the arms formed from one of said yokes diverging rearwardly and having their extremities rigidly mounted in the rear super-structure, the arms of the other yoke continuing from the eye formed thereon being arranged parallel and slidably disposed through the forward superstructure, those portions of the parallel arms continuing from the super-structure to the rear ends thereof being inclined downwardly, a coil spring member having the forward ends thereof enried in the eye of the first mentioned yoke gaged with said tongue, a linking member and adjustably engaging a link of said connecting the rear end of said coil spring flexible connection.
with the eye of the last mentioned yoke, a In testimony whereof I hereunto 211%; my 5 plate removably applied to and connecting signature in the presence of two witnesses, 15
the rear ends of the last mentioned yoke, said WILLIE L BUCKNE-R plate resting loosely on the aforesaid reach,
an eye bolt adjustably carried on the plate, Htnesses:
a flexible connection having one end thereof W. H. LILES, 10 engaged with said eye bolt, and a hook car- CARL lVILLIA'i ITs.
