Application filed February 2 To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLAUDE E. TRINDER, of Manlius, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Valve, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object the production of a valve which is particularly simple in construction, economical in manufacture and highly efficient and durable in use; and it consists in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawing in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a preferable form of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the spring embodied in the form of valve illustrated in Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and l are respectively, a plan and a sectional view of a slightly different form of handle and spring and contiguous parts, from that shown in Fig. 1. Figs. 5 and 6 are views similar to Figs. 3 and 4; of additional modified forms of handle and spring.
1 is the body of the casing of the valve, said body being formed with a valve seat 2, a threaded opening 3 alined with the valve seat 2, and with inlet and outlet couplings l 5.
6 is a bonnet forming part of the casing, the bonnet extending into the opening 3 and being formed with inner and outer nipples 7, 8 having axially alined bores of the same diameter, these bores communicating at their inner ends with a chamber 9 formed in the main central portion 10 of the bonnet member, from which portion 10 the nipples project. Preferably the inner face of the nipple 7 and the periphery of the nipple S are threaded.
The bonnet is formed substantially symmetrical with respect to a plane, indicated by the line XX Fig. 1, extending transversely through the main portion 10 thereof midway between the ends of the bonnet, and preferably the main portion 10 is formed with a central annular circumferential flange 11 exending along such plane and with a threaded portion 12 below the flange for turning into the threaded opening 3, and with a portion 13 above the flange, shaped to form a wrench hold, the wrench hold 13 being usually angular, as hexagonal, in form. Owing to the flange 11, which laps the edge of the body 1 around the opening 3, roughening of such edge with a wrench 1s prevented. Owing to the fact that the bonnet is symmetrical, as set forth, and that the bores thereof are of equal diameter, the cost of manufacturing and machining the bonnet is reduced to a minimum.
141- is a neck forming part of the valve casing, the neck having a lengthwise passage alined with the valve seat 2 and the opening 3, and an internally threaded cupped portion 15 of enlarged diameter, at its lower end for turning on the externally threaded nipple 8 of the bonnet, the neck also having a portion 16 shaped to form a wrench hold and located above the cup 15. The bottom of the cup portion 15 partly closes the upper end of the opening 3 and forms an annular bearing face for the ring or washer 2-1, presently described, and the inclosing Wall of said portion 15 constitutes a depending internally threaded flange at the bottom of the neck 14.
' 17 is a valve head coacting with, and movable toward and from, the valve seat 2, and 18 is a carrier for such valve head, the carrier being here shown as externally threaded and turning in the inner nipple 7 of the bonnet 6. The valve head 17 is suitably secured to the carrier 18.
19 is a stem for operating the valve head, the stem extending upwardly through the bonnet 6 and neck 1e beyond the end of the neck and being non-movable endwisely in its normal operation but having a limited endwise adjusting movement for a purpose to be explained. The lower end of the stem is formed non-circular and slidably fits the non-circular entrance 20 of a socket formed in the carrier 18. Said stem is formed as a single unit, tl'iat is, it is not formed of sections having relative movement. The lower portion 21 of said socket of the carrier is preferably formed of larger diameter than the upper end thereof which slidably fits the stem 19. The enlarged portion 21 prevents binding of tlie carrier 13 and stem 19 in case the carrier is tilted slightly out of axial alinement, as when the external threads of the carrier do not take evenly into the threads of the nipple 7 and for addition ally providing for the tilting tendency of the carrier 13 without binding, the upper end surface of the carrier .18 is rounded as at 22 around the upper end of the entrance 20. The entrance 20 and the enlargement 21 open through opposite ends of the carrier and are formed with a core during the cast ing of the carrier and therefore the formation of the enlargement does not add to the cost of the carrier. The stem is also shown as provided with means for engaging the smooth bore of the outer nipple 8, this means being shown as an integral annular flange 23 one face of which is opposed to the inner end face of the cup 15, and a member, as a ring or washer 24 for rendering the casing nonleakable, is interposed between the op posing surfaces of the flange 23 and the bottom of the cup 15, this member being formed of suitable metallic or composition material and being formed with annular grooves on its opposite faces for receiving annular beads 25 and 26 provided on said opposing faces of the flange 23 and the bottom of the cup 15. The washer snugly fits the bore of the nipple 8 and tends to hold the stem from lateral movement the grooves and beads 25, 26 also tending to hold the stem from lateral movement. The internal bore of the nipple 8 is smooth so that the washer can be made to fit the bore. If the nipple were provided with internal threads, the washer would have to be passed over said threads when being placed in position and such threads would pare off por tions of the periphery of the washer so that it would not fit tightly and perform its function most efliciently.
27 is an operating elementhere shown as a handle mounted on the outer end of the stem 19, the handle being here illustrated as provided with a cup member 28 on its under side, which receives and slides or moves relatively to the upper enlarged end 29 of the neck 14, the cup member being formed with a non-circular axial passage in its bottom which slidabiy receives a non-circular portion 30 at the upper end of the stem 19 and serves to transmit the motion of the handle 27 to the stem. The cup is suitably secured to the stem, and in order to lock the cup and handle together so that the rotation of the handle is transferred to the cup, the cup is formed with projections 31 at intervals which enter corresponding sockets in the handle 27. As here shown the cup is coun tersunk in the lower face of the handle.
32 is a member as a ring or washer simi lar to the washer 24, the washer 32 being interposed between and engaging the upper or outer end of the neck 14 and the bottom of the cup 28, and the periphery of the washer engaging a part of the inner face of said cup. The opposing faces of the end edge of the neck 14 and of the washer are formed respectively with a bead and a groove similar to the beads 25 and 26 of the flange 23 and the cup 15 and the grooves of the washer 24. This washer 32 serves as an anti-friction member during the turning of the handle 27 and prevents lateral movement of the handle and stem. To those skilled in the art, it will be understood that the faces of the stem 19 and its handle which turn against the opposing surfaces of the bonnet and the neck do not tightly fit said opposing surfaces, and that the inner and the outer surfaces of the washers 24 and 32 do tightly fit the surfaces engaged therewith, and that thus to a limited extent the washers prevent lateral movement of the handle and the stem.
33 is a spring for adjusting the stem endwisely for the purpose of clamping the washer 24 against the bottom of the cup 15 and thereby rendering the valve unleakable and for also clamping the washer 32 between the opposing surfaces of. the neck 14 and the cup 28, said spring being located outside of the casing and being preferably carried by the handle and having marginal portions thereof seated on the handle and the intermediate portion thereof connected to the stem. Preferably the spring is in the form of a sheet metal disk, Figs. 1 and 2, mounted on the outer face of the handle 27 and having its margin engaging with the seat 34 concentric with the stem 19 and having a central portion connected to the stem. As here shown the central portion is connected to the stem by a clamping member, as a screw 35, passing through an opening 36 at the center of the disk 33 and threading into the stem 19. Obviously as the screw 35 is turned into the stem 19, the spring 33 is tensioned so that it tends to move the stem 19 axially outwardly.
As seen in Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6, the spring instead of being in the form of a disk and forming a complete cover for the central portion of the handle 27, may be in the form of a disk cut away to form radially extending arms 37, the ends of which engage spring seats on the handle, the seats being spaced apart from each other and from the axis of the stem 19.
In Figs. 3 and 4, the handle 27 instead of being formed solid, is shown in the form of a wheel having spokes 38, the arms of the spring overlying such spokes.
In Figs. 5 and 6, the spring is shown as in the form of a strip of sheet metal, and is applied to a lever-handle connected to the stem, the lever having a pointer 39 movable over a dial 40 which indicates the position of the valve head with respect to the valve seat, that is, whether the valve is open or closed or to what extent it is open.
In Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, the spring is shown as concaved out of a plane when tensioned, and in Figs. 5 and 6, such spring is normally convex and is flattened as it is tensioned.

In a valve, a casing provided with a valve, seat, an opening alined with the valve seat,and a neck detachable from the portion of the casing inclosing said opening and having a lengthwise passage alined with the valve seat and the opening, and having an annular bearing face partly closing the up per end of said opening, a valve head movable toward and from the valve seat, a rev oluble stem for operating the valve head, the stem extending through the opening and the passage andhaving an annular projecting shoulder spaced apart from the annular bearing face and opposed thereto, and a ring having its periphery engaged with the inner face of the wall of the casing inclosing said opening, and its end faces engaged with said annular face and the face of the annular shoulder opposed to said annular face, an end face of the ring and the face engaged therewith being formed with interfitting means for holding the stem centered during thev turning movement thereof and preventing lateral movement of said stem relatively to. the neck, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

In a valve, a casing provided with a valve seat, a nipple having its bore alined with the valve seat and its periphery threaded, and a neck having at its bottom an internally threaded depending flange coacting with the threaded periphery of the nipple, and also having an annular bearing face partly closing the upper end of the bore of the nipple, a valve head movable toward and from the valve seat, a revoluble stem for operating the valve head, the stem extending through the nipple and the passage and having an annular projecting shoulder spaced apart from the annular bearing face and opposed thereto and having its periphery engaged with the inner face of the wall of the nipple surrounding the bore of said nipple, and a ring having its periphery engaged with the inner face of said wall surrounding the bore of the nipple and its end faces engaged with said annular face and the face of the annular shoulder opposed to said annular face, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

In a valve, a casing provided with a valve seat, a nipple having'its bore alined with the valve seat and its periphery threaded, and a neck having at its bottom an internally threaded depending flange coacting with the threaded periphery of the nipple, and also having an annular bearing face partly closing the upper end of the bore of the nipple, a valve head movable toward and from the valve seat, a revoluble stem for op erating the valve head, the stem extending through the nipple and the passage and hav ing an annular projecting shoulder spaced apart from the annular bearing face and opposed thereto, and having its periphery engaged with the inner face of the wall of the nipple surrounding the bore of said nipple, and a ring having its periphery engaged with the inner face of said wall surrounding the bore of the nipple and its end facesengaged with said annular face and the face of the annular shoulder opposed to said annular face, an end face of'the ring and the face engaged therewith being formed with interfitting means for holding the stem centered during the turning movement thereof and preventing lateral movement of said stem relatively to the neck, substantially as and for the purpose described.
11. In a valve, a casing provided with a valve seat, an opening alined with the valve seat, anda neck detachable from the portion of the casing inclosing said opening and having a lengthwise passage alined with the valve seat and the opening, and having an annular bearing face partly closing the upper end of said opening, a valve head movable toward and from the valve seat, a stem for operating the valve head, the stem extending through the opening and the passage beyond the outer end of the neck, and
having an annular projecting shoulder spaced apart from the annular bearing face and opposed thereto, a member mounted on the outer end of the stem to turn the same, said member being movable relatively to the neck with the stem and having a cupped portion encircling the upper end of the stem, a ring tting within said cupped portion and interposed between the bottom thereof and the upper end of the neck, and a ring hav ing its periphery engaged with the inner face of the wall of the casing inclosing said opening and its end faces engaged with said annular face and the face of the annular shoulder opposed to said annular face, sub stantially as and for the purpose specified.
12. in a valve, a casing provided with a valve seat, a nipple having its bore alined with the valve seat and its periphery threaded, a neck having an internally threaded depending flange coacting with the threaded periphery of the nipple and also having an annular bearing face partly closing the upper end of the bore of the nipple, a valve head movable toward and from the valve seat, a stem for operating the valve head, the stem extending through the nipple and the passage beyond the upper end of the neck and having an annular projecting shoulder spaced apart from the annular bearing face and opposed thereto, and having its periphery engaged with the inner face of the wall of the nipple surrounding the bore of said nipple, a member mounted on the outer end of the stem to turn the same, said member having a cupped portion encircling the upper end of the stem, the lower part of said cupped portion engaging the periphery of the contiguous portion of the neck, a ring within said cupped portion between the bottom thereof and the upper end of the neck, the periphery of the ring engaging a part of the inner face of the cupped portion, and the end faces of the ring engaging the bottom of said cupped portion and the upper end of the neck, and a ring having its periphery engaged with the inner face of said wall surrounding the bore of the nipple, and its end faces engaged with said annular face and the face of the annular shoulder opposed to said annular face, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

In a valve, a casing having a valve seat, an and opening alined with the valve seat, the casing also comprising a neck having a passage alined with the valve seat and the opening, a valve head movable toward and from the valve seat, a stem for operating the valve head extending through said opening and passage and projecting beyond the outer end of the neck, the stem having an annular shoulder located within the easing and opposed to an inner end face of said neck around the passage of the neck, a member mounted on the outer end of the stem and having a cupped portion inclosing the outer end of the neck, a ring fitting within said cupped portion and interposed between the bottom thereof and the outer end face of the neck, the neck and the ring having in tertitting means for holding the ring centered relatively to the neck, said ring thereby holding the stem in axial alinement with the neck and preventing lateral movement thereof, and a ring located between said annular shoulder and said inner end face of the neck, said shoulder, the neck and the latter ring having interfitting means for holding the latter ring centered whereby the stem is held from lateral movement, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
