Description

y HARRY WHITTINGHAM, or NEW YORK, n.
.Letters Patent No. 108,075, dated October 4,1870.
v vIMPROVEIYIENlI' iN SECTIONAL STEAM-GENERATOR'S.
The Schedule referred ,to in these Letters Patent'an. making part of the same To all 'whom oit-may concern.-
'Be it known that I, HARRY Wm'r'rrNGHAM, of the-city, county, and State of New4 York, have invented anew aud useful Improvement in Sectional lSteam-generator; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, audexact description thereof', which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to tlie accompanying drawing forming part'of this specification, iu
which .drawing- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section 'of' thisinvention.
` Fig'u'rc isa transverse section ofLthe same.
Similar vletters indicate corresponding parts.
This inventionV relates to an improvement on a granted tol .which is composed of a series of horizontal or inclined.
watexspi'pes, connected at their ends by vertical pipes, and th'e'.u'ate1'plpes of which are situated iu a zigzag y positicmmr staggered So far as this part of my invention is concerned, it differs from my'former pateutfreferred to above, onlyin the particular that the upright tubes are made of zigzag form rather than straight.
Ihis in-vention consists, also, in the arrangement of screw-caps, or plugs, fittiugovcr or 'into thimbles on 1 the outside of the upright tubes, and bored out to receive the ends of the smoke-lines, which pass concen-` trically through the water-pipes in such a manner that said-'screw-caps, or plugs, form the `guides for the concentric smoke-fines, and that,by removing -said caps or plugs and concentric smoke-fines, easy access can be had to the interior of the water-pipes tor the Vpurpose of cleaning.
v.-I- also propose 'to construct my steam-generator with a right and left-'hand .thread on the ends of the waterpipes, iucombiuation with corresponding threads in the thimbles of theupright tubes, in. such a manner that the'operatiou cf couuectiug and 'disconnecting thewater-pipes with the upright tubes is rendered comparatively easy, though I do not claim as my in.
` in the form ot'a zigzag, and they are provided with thimbles a, projecting fromtheir inner sides, and with thimbles b, projecting' from their outer sides, the thimbles ou the two sides of each tube -being exactly opposite to each other, and those on'each side being situated iu-a zigzag position above eachother, to cor,- rcspoud to the zigzag form of the tubes.
The interior thimbles' a are intended to receive the ends of the water-pipes, the connection being eiiected by right and left screw-threads, cutipn the/ends of the inserting saidpipes into their thimbles, and turning them gradually and successively in the proper direction, the tubes B are drawn toward each other, and tight joints are produced between the said tubes and the water-pipes- It desired,A 'additional upright tubes, BF, -may be plaocd between thetnbes B, as describedin my'pat eut of June 15,1869, the connection between the right aud left screw-threads, above stated.
The water-pipes being inserted into the thimbles d become staggered, as shown in g. 2 of the draw-A ing, and thereby the effect of the lire lon said pipes is materially improved.
The thimbles l1, projecting from the outer'sides of' the tubes B, are provided with an internal screwthread to receive plugs al, and these plugs are bored out to receive the re-tlues C, which pass concentrically through the pipes A, the boiler being set in such tubes B and B* and the water-pipes being madewbyfrom the fire-grate, underone end of the pipes A; back to the opposite cud, whence theyireturn, through the concentric ues C, into thevsmoke-stack. By unscrewing the plugs d, the concentric tire-dues can be readily taken out, and free access is obtained' to the interior of the waterpipes for the purpose-ot` cleaning. n
Instead" of providing the external thimbles b with an internal screw-thread to receive plugs, they might be provided with an external screw-thread to receive caps, which would'produce the same result.
What. I claim as'new, vand desire to secure by- Letters Patent, is-
as set forth.
