WILLIAM V. DAVIS, OF DEALVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA.
MARKING ATTACHMENT FOR PLOWS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, \ViLLLiM V. I)AV1S, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dealville, .in the county of Alexander and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mark ing Attachments tor 'llows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to row marking attachments for plows and has for its object the provision of an improved device oi this character adapted to be secured readily and quickly to the beam of an ordinary beam plow in such manner that it may be swung from one side to the other of said beam to adapt it for use uponeither right or left hand plows.
A further object of the invention to provide in a structure such as above set forth, means for adjusting the marker laterally with relation to the plow to thereby adaptit to mark ott rows spaced varying distances apart and at the same time to etliciently brace the marking element with relation to the plow to thereby prevent it from being bent or twisted out of alinementit it contacts with roots, stones, or other obstructions.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description which now follows.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a plow having the attachment applied thereto, and Fig. 2 is a plan View of the attachment.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in both of the figures of the drawing.
The attachment is secured to the beam 5 of an ordinary type of plow by means of a hinge or pivot rod 6, the ends of said rod being engaged by eyelets 7 secured or driven into the plow beam. The rod 6 carries a sleeve 8 that is rigidly secured to said rod through the medium of a coupling 9. A coupling pin 1.0 rigidly secured to said rod carries an angularly disposed car 11 to which is pivoted the end 12 of a sleeve 13.
Rods 14 and 15 are slidably disposed in the sleeves 8 and 13 respectively and the rod 1 1: carries a coupling 16 having an angularly disposed ear 17 to which the outer end of rod 15 is pivoted. A marking wheel 1.8 is mounted upon the outer end. of the rod 1 1. Means are provided for securing the rods Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 25, 1913.
Patented Dec. 2, 1913.
Serial No. 756,717.
1 1 and 15 in varying positions of adjustment into or out of the sleeves 8 and 13, these means comprisin set screws or equivalent devices, 15) and 20. It is apparentthat as the rod 1st is moved into or out of the sleeve 8, to thereby bring the wheel 18 closer or farther from beam 5, the angles between sleeve 13 and rod (5 and between rods 14 and 15, change. The pivot connections between ear 11 and sleeve 13 and car 17 and rod 15 permit the necessary movement of the parts as will be readily understood.
To render it possible for the plowman to elevate the marking wheel 18 so that it will clear rocks, stumps and other obstructions, a bell crank lever 21 is pivoted at 22 to the plow balm and carries a handle 23 at one end and a tort: comprising fingers 9 1 and 25 at the opposite end. These fingers underlie sleeve 8 in its two positions so that one or the other of these fingers is always available for lifting the marking wheel 18 when the handle 23 is grasped and pulled toward the plow handles.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that simple and ellicient means are herein provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while the elements shown and described are well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but includes within its purview such changes as may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a plow, of a marking device comprising a transversely extending rod pivoted to the plow beam, a bell crank lever pivoted upon the plow beam and underlying said red, the opposite end of said bell crank lever being accessible by the operator when the plow is in use.
2. I11 a device of the character described, the combination with a plow beam, of a pivot rod mounted thereon, transversely extending supporting members carried by said pivot rod, a marking device carried by said supporting members, a bell crank lever pivoted to the plow beam, and provided at one end with a handleand at the opposite In testimony whereof I affix my signature 1n presence of two W tnesses.
WILLIAM V. DAVIS.
end With a fork, said fork comprising two fingers, one of Which underlies one of said transversely extending supporting members when the marking device is in one position and the other of which underlies said memher when the marking device is in the opposite position.
