To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Greene RoLLwixo, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and resident of Hanover, Germany, have invented certain new and useful lm 'n-ovoments in Faucets, of which the following is a specification.

With these and other objects in view, the
invention resides in the features of construction, arrangement of parts and combinations of elements which will hereinafter be fully described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the invention, showing one of the valves seated to prevent the flow of water; Fig. 2 is a similar section showing the valves unsealed to admit-'ofthe passage of water; Fig. 3 is a similar section showing another valve seated to cut elf the flow; and Fig. 4- is a similar section showing the parts detached and the auxiliary valve seated.
Referring to said drawings, in which like designating characters distinguish like parts throughout the several views1 indicates a -faucet-body having an integral forwardly and downwardly curved spout 2. l"hreaded axially into said body from the front end thereof is a stem 3 which has upon its outer end suitable means by which it may be grasped for turning, as a hand-bar 1. A gland 5 is provided in the front end of the body 1 about the stem 3 whereby a packing 6 is maintained in position. The rear 56 end of the body 1 is interiorly threaded and has received therein the exteriorly threaded front end of a barrel 7 whose opposite end is adapted for coin'lection with a water supply pipe or othcr source of liquid supply. Intel-posed between the outer end of the barrel and an annular internal shoulder 1 formed in the rear end of the faucet body I is a ring or washer 8 of suitable material. which constitutes a valve sea t through which the admission of fluid to the faucet body is controlled by either. of two oppositelyfacing valves 9 and 10, the former located be hind and the other in front of said seat. The rearwardly facing valve 10 may be carried by or formed integral with the stem 3, but is preferably separate therefrom, as shown, having an integral stem 11 whose end is loosely seated in a socket 12 provided in the inner end of said stem 3; thus,.the wearing or'grinding of the valve seat 8 incident to the turning of the valve into and out of seating position is avoided.
The valve!) is mounted on the front end of a stem 13, and is normally held seated against the valve seat 8 by means of a spiral spring 14 interposed between said valve and an internal annular shoulder 15 formed ad jacent to the rear end of the barrel. 'A forwardlyprojecting stem 16 is carried centrally on the front face of the valve 9 and has'its front end loosely seated in a socket 17 provided in the face of the valve 10.
. Said stem 16 constitutes a distance-piece whereby said valves 9 and 10 are held separated, the length thereof being such that but one of said-valves may be seated at one time.
Seated against an internal annular shouldcrlS formed in the rear end of the barre 7 is a ring or washer 12), preferably of fiber, which constitutes a seal. for an outwardly facing auxiliary valve 20 which is adjust 'ahly mounted on the rear end of alve stem 13. The valves 9 and 20 are so adjusted with relation to each other that'lmth seat upon their respective seats 8 and if) at one time, a double seal for preventing leakage of liquid to the interior of the faucet body being thus provided.
In p notice, the stem may be turned forward or backward from the open position of the faucet depicted in Fig. 2 to close the faucet. 'hcn turned forward the valve 1O isthrust back against the seat 8, as shown in Fig. l, and in such movement of the valve '10 the valves 9 and 20 are, through the intermediacy of the stem 16, retired against the tension of the spring 14; to the position shown in said figure. When turned rearward, the valve 10 is further withdrawn from its seat 8, allowing the valves 9 and 20, actuated by the spring, 14- to move to seating position against valve sea- ts 8 and 19, respectively, as shown in Fig.3. When it is desired to renew valve seat 8, as when itbecomes worn, this may -be accomplished by simply disconnecting the faucet body 1 from the barrel 7, as shownin Fig. 4, and without disconnecting said barrel fromits seat. As the valve 10 is with- 15 drawn from hearing engagement with the stem 13, the spring 14 draws the auxiliary valve upon its seat 19 preventing access of water to the barrel 7. Thus, as is apparent, the renewal of the valve seat does go not require that the water supply be shut ofi' prior to disconnecting the faucet.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I provide a faucet of exceedingly simple and practicable construction possessing various as novel features and manifest advantages.
Iaving thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a faucet, a barrel, a faucet body de tacha'bly connected to said barrel, a valve seat at the entrance to said body, detachably connected oppositely-facing valves operating to seat against opposite faces of said seat, said valves being independently adapted to control the passage of fluid from said barrel to said faucet body, a stem upon the front end of which the rearmost of saidvalves is carried, a forwardly facing valve carried by the rear end of said stem, a valve seat at the 40 entrance to said barrel, the last named valve being adapted to engage the last named valve seat simultaneously with the seating of the valve on the, opposite end of said stem, a
spring controlling the movement of all of said valves in one'direction, and means for simultaneously moving all of said valves in the opposite direction.
2. A faucet comprising a body composed of two detachably connected parts having communicating water passages, an apertured:
removable member interposed between said parts whose opposite faces constitutevalve seats, a valve for seating against the rear face of said member, a spring normally maintaining said valve seated, avalve'for 'i aasfeo seating against the front face of said 'mem ber, means for moving the last named valve to its seat, a valve seat at the entrance to the rearmost part of said body, a valve for seat ing on the last named seat carried in fixed relation to the first named valve, and a dis tance piece interposed between said valves whereby movement of said valves is rendered conjoint.
3.
