Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Joan L. SAYLon, of Minneapolis, I-Iennepin county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Veighing-Scalcs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to weighing scales designed particularly for use in a grocery or general store to allow such commodities as tea, coifee, and similar merchandise sold by weight to be quickly and accurately wei hed.
The invention consists generally in a cabinet having discharge openings and a scale movable on a track beneath said openings, said openings having regulating valves, and means controlled by the movement of the scale beam for trip ing a valve to allow it to close and shut off t 1e flow of material to the scale.
Further the invention consists in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front view of a cabinet with my invention applied thereto, Fig, 2 is a detail view illustrating the scale set in position beneath one of the ho per discharge openings to receive the material from the hopper, Fig. 3 is a sectional view through one of the hoppers of the cabinet,'il.lustrating the means for closing the hopper openin and the operating mechanism therefor, Fig. 4 is a detail view of the valve controlling the hopper opening, Fig. 5 is a detail view of the valve locking mechanism, Fig. 6 is a sectional view showing the end of the scale. n the drawing, 2 represents a cab net having a series of hoppers 3 therein adapted to contain merchandise of various kinds, such as tea, coffee, and the like. Each hopper has a discharge opening 4 above which is a cone-shaped late 5 to prevent the material from wedging in the discharge ppen 1n v r %3 is a valve pivoted at 7 and having a part. 8 that is adapted to close the discharge opening and saidvalve is capable of oscillation to expose or close the hopper openin and is provided with a handle 9 and'a gui e10. A spring 11-is attached to said valve and by its tension normally holds the 'valve'm its closed position. A pair of electromagnets 11 are mounted nearthe valve and an armature 12 is pivoted at 13 and has a beveled arm 14 which overhangs the valve and an arm 15 that is adapted to drop in behind the valve when it is swung to the position indicated in Fig. 4, thereby locking the valve in its open position and allowing the material to flow freely out of the hopper. A track 16 is arranged on the front of the cabinet beneath the hoppers and a scale 17 is adapted to slide on said track and is provided with a lug 18 that is adapted to enter a notch 19 in the top of the track rail and hold the scale beneath one of the hoppers, there being a notch in the rail under each hopper opening.
20 is a scale beam and 21 a scoop arranged in position to receive the material as it falls from the hopper above. The end of the scale beam projects into a slot 22 provided in a late 23 that is vertically adjustable on the rame of the scale by means of a slot 24 and a bolt or screw 25. Contact springs 26 are carried by a block 27 that is insulated from the scale beam and frame and is provided with a pin 28 yieldingly held by a spring 29 in contact with a bracket 30. Conductors 31 and 32 lead from the scale track and the bracket 13 respectively to the electromagnets through a battery B.
In the position shown in Fig. 6, one side of the circuit is closed through the contact pin 28 and the bracket 30 and the conductor 32 leading to one ole of the electromagnets, and when the weight in the scale scoop is sufiicient to tilt the beam and weight, the end of the beam will contact with the sprin s 26 and the other side of the circuit will be closed through the conductor 31. The electromagnets will then be energized to attract the armature and tri the valve 6, which will swing to its close position by the tension of the spring 11, shutting off the discharge of material from the hopper. The, scoop may then be emptied, the scale moved along to another hopper and the clerk, grasping the handle 9, may 0 )en the valve, allowing the material to flow into the scoop until the weight desired has been obtained, when the discharge will be automatically cut ofi by the release of the valve.
I regard the plate 23 as an important feature of my invention, as it limits the downward movementof the beam and prevents the continued oscillating movement of the beam when it has once been brought to a balance; as, for instance, without this controlling plate the beam mi ht swing to its cut oil position and make the contact and then drop back again. It would continue to do so until the accuracy of the device was completely destroyed. This plate is adjustable vertically so that the stroke of the scale beam can be easily and quickly regulated.
I claim as my invention 2-- 1. The combination, with a cabinet having a hopper provided with a discharge opening, a valve comprising a plate pivotally supported at one end and adapted to swing back and forth across said discharge openlng, a guide for said plate, a spring nor. mally holding said plate in its closed posi-' tion across said discharge opening, a scale having a scoop adapted to be ad usted be neath said discharge opening, an electromagnet in circuit with the scale beam and having an armature provided with means in the path of said valve to normally look it in its open position, said valve being released by tie energizing of said magnet when a predeterminedamount of material has been discharged into said scoop.
2. T he combination, with a cabinet havin a series of hoppers therein provided with discharge openings, and regulating valves therefor, of a track, a scale movable on said track beneath said discharge openings, electro-magnets, armatures therefor, said armatures being adapted to engage and lock said regulating valves in their open position, electric contacts arranged in the path of the scale beam, electric conductors connecting said contacts with said electromagnet, whereby when said scale beam is tilted the circuit will be closed through said magnet to, release the valve under which the scale may be placed.

The combination, with a cabinet having a series of hoppers provided with discharge openings and regulating.- valves therefor, of a track, a scale movable on saidtrack beneath said dischargeopenin s, ar matures arranged to engage and loc said regulatin valves in their open position, an electric circuit in connectionwith said armatures and having contact points in the path of said scale beam, whereby when said beam is tilted said electric circuit will be closed to release. the valve. underwhich the scale may be placed.
4. The combination, Wlthil hopper having a discharge opening, of a valve therefor, means for holding said valve in its closed position, a scale ada ted to be placed beneath-said hopper, a lock mounted on said scale and having a contact point, a bracket arranged to engage said contact point when said scale is set beneath said hopper, an electromagnet, an armature therefor, said armature being adapted to engage and lock said valve in its open position, contact springs arranged in the path of the scale beam, electric conductors connecting said bracket and said scale beam with said electromagnet, whereby, when said scale beam is tilted, and contacts with said springs, the circuit will be closedthrough said magnet to release said valve.
5. The combination, with a scale frame and contact s rings mounted thereon, of a scale beam a. apted to oscillate and engage said springs, a plate vertically adjustable on said frame and having a slot therein to receive the end of said beam, the adjustment of said late with respect to said contact springs, etermining the stroke of said beam and preventing the continued oscillation of the same, substantially as described.
6. The combination, with a cabinet having a series of hoppers, a scale slidably arranged beneath said hoppers and having a scoop and a weighing beam, regulating valves for said-hop er-openings, electrormagnets in cir-. cuit witi the scale beam and having armatures provided with means in the path, of a' valve to normally lock it in its open position, said valve being released by the energizin of said magnets when a predetermine "amount of material has been discharged into. said scoop.
