MILK-BOTTLE HOLDER.

ing is a full, clear, and exact description.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: to provide a holder of the character specified, which is locked in holding position only when having contained therein a capped or filled bottle, to avoid the annoyance and inconvenience of mischievous interference or meddling with the holder prior to its being locked; to provide a holder mountable upon the frame of a door or window, which may be released only by opening the door or the window; to provide a holder which is temporarily mounted beside a door or window, and which may be removed during the intervals between the delivery of the bottles containing the milk; to provide a holder to operate in conjunction with a door sill, window sill or other horizontal rest of a standing structure, which holder, when locked, is held in position by the adjacent door or window; and to provide a holder, the construction whereof is simple and efficient.
One embodiment of the present invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which j Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a holder constructed and arranged in conformity with the present invention, the same being in conjunction with a bottle containing milk, and the section being taken on the 40 line 11 in Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, the door and jamb therefor illustrated in conjunction therewith being in section; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the holder, the top of the lock-case thereof being re- 45 moved and the striker-plate and holder being shown in section; Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the holder and a fragment of the bottle in the operation of being introduced therein, the section being taken as on the 50 line 4.4 in Fig. 2.
As seen in the accompanying drawings, the holder primarily consists in a covering cylinder 9. The cylinder 9 is formed to a diameter approximating the diameter of a 55 conventional milk bottle, such as indicated in the drawings by the numeral 10. The
cylinder 9 is closed at the top by the bottom of a lockcase 11. The length of the cylinder is suflicient to prevent the uptilting and removal of the bottle 10 from the cylinder while the same is held in position perpendicular to the sill 12 or other rest for the bottle 10.
The case 11 is full-sided, and is pivotally connected by hinge knuckles 13 to theupper edge of an inner swinging blade 14. The
blade 14 is pivotally connected by means of i a hinge pin 15 with a slide plate 16, adapted to fit within a pocket formed by a wall 17 set out from the face of a striker plate 18.
The striker plate 18 has formed thereon a housing 19, the upper surface whereof is curved or inclined, to form a striker wall 20 having a bolt 21. The bolt 21 is slidably mounted in the case 11, and, is guided therein by lugs 22. The bolt 21 is locked in its normal or extended position by a cross bar 23. Thebar 23 is mounted on a pin 24, which pin extends through a slot 25 formed in said bolt and through the bottom of the case 11, where the pin is provided with a head 26. The pin 24 and bar 23 are normally depressed, to extend the pin outward from the casev 11 andto seat the bar 23 in the grooves 27 formed in the upper surface of the bolt 21 at both sides of the slot 25. To this end, the spiral springs 28 are provided, operating toextend said pin and seat said bar in said slide, when not otherwise prevented. The bolt- 21 is normally extended, as seenbest in Fig. 3 of the drawings, being moved thereto by a spiral spring 29, which'is anchored upon a pin 30 and is secured to an arm 31.
Normally, the case 11 and cylinder 9 connected therewith are held inraised position, such as shown in Fig. at of the drawings, relative the plate 16. To this end, the spring 32 is provided, being wound on the hinge pin 33, as seen'best in Figs. 2 and 1 of the drawings. The ends of the spring 32 are arranged to bear against the side of the case 11 and upon the plate 16, as shown in Fig. 4: of the drawings.
When providing a house or other structure with a holder of the character described, the striker plate 18 is first mounted upon said structure, using therefor any suit able form of fastening devices, such as bolts and screws. The open end of the pocket formed by the wall 17 is turned toward the door or moving member of the structure.

The plate is properly disposed with reference to the desired height above the rest or sill 12.
It will be understood that the case 11 and parts connected therewith are not permanently attached to the standing structure.
' When in expectation of the visit of the milkman, the holder is placed in position. This is accomplished by inserting the slide plate 16 within the pocket formed by the wall 17. The door or moving member is then closed; the blade 14, being moved by the door, as smnes a position substantially such as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, or at right-angles to the plate 16. The spring 32 holds the case 11 in the inclined position shown in Fig. 4, with the result that when the door or moving member is closed, the outer end of the bolt 21 is above and disposed in line with the striker wall 20. In this position, the bolt 21 being held immovable by the bar 23, the case 11 cannot be lowered to a position where the bolt 21 would enter the housing 19, to lock the holder in the lowered position. This, as above indicated, cannot be accomplished unless the bar 23 be lifted This is accomplished such as 34, is thrust within the cylinder 9 against the head 26 of the pin 24, to thrust inward the said pin, to lift the bar 23 out of engagement with the grooves 27 of the bolt 21. When the bolt 21 is thus released, the spring 29. accommodates itself to the movement of said bolt, while said bolt is be ing retracted; by passing over the wall 20.
Then said bolt registers-with the opening in the housing 19, the spring 29 draws the bolt outward, shooting the same within said housing. It will now be observed that in this position the bolt 21 cannot be retracted,
and that the casing 11 and cylinder 9 cannot be lifted until the door 35 has swung to an open position, which, being within the control of the householder, insures the bottle-holder from being tampered with. WVhen. the door 35 is thus opened, the case 11, together wit-h the bottle 10, is moved to withdraw the plate 16 from the pocket formed by the wall 17. When the holder is thus removed from engagement with the striker plate 18, the case 11 and cylinder 9 are lifted from the bottle, and the holder is put to one side until required for service again.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A milk bottle holder, comprising a cyl inder; a supporting blade operatively connected thereto; a spring-actuated bolt operatively connected with said cylinder; a striker plate for said bolt, adapted for mounting on a standing structure; and means connected with said blade'for holding the same in fixed relation to said striker plate when the door of the standing structure is closed.
2. A milk bottle holder, comprising a vertically-swinging locking member having a spring-actuated extensible bolt and a cylinder adapted to circumfold the top of a bottle; means for pivotally mounting said locking member adjacent an entrance opening of a standing structure; and an engaging member for said bolt fixedly mounted upon the standing structure, to engage said bolt when said locking member is in service position.
3. A milk bottle holder, comprising a vertically-swinging lock case having a springactuated extensible bolt; a striker plate adapted to be permanently mounted on a standing structure adjacent a closure member thereof; a connecting member pivotally connected with said striker plate and said case, to be held in locked relation to said striker plate by said closure member.

A milk bottle holder, comprising a ver-" tically-swinging lock case having a springactuat-ed extensible bolt and a cylinder adapted to circumfold the top of a bottle; means for pivotally mounting said lock case adjacent an entrance opening of a standing structure; an engaging member for said'bolt fixedly mounted upon the standing structure, to engage said bolt when said lock case is in service position; means mounted within said case for locking said bolt in extended position to prevent the retraction thereof; and means operable by a bottle when extended within said cylinder, for releasing said bolt.
5. A milk bottle holder, comprising a lock case having a spring-actuated bolt protruding from the side thereof, an open-ended cylinder mounted on said case for circumfolding the neck of a bottle; a connecting member having a pivotally-connected plate and blade, said blade being pivotally connected with said lock case; a striker plate having a pocket formed therein to receive said blade; a locking bar to engage said bolt in. out-of-service position, to prevent retrac member having a pivotally-connected plate" and blade, said blade being pivotally connected with said lock case; a striker plate having a pocket formed therein to receive said plate; a locking bar to engage said bolt in out-of-service position, to prevent retraction thereof; means operable by a bottle When inserted in said cylinder, for releasing said bolt to permit the retraction thereof; and a housing for said bolt to receive the protruded end thereof.
7. A milk bottle holder, comprising a pocket-forming member adapted to be fixedly mounted on a standing structure adjacent an entrance opening thereof; a connecting member adapted for insertion in the pocket formed by said pocket-forming memher; a lock case, having a spring-actuated protruding bolt, said case being pivotally mounted on said connecting member; a spring-seated bar Within said case to lock said bolt in extended position When out of service; a cylinder mounted on said case to circumfold the top of a bottle of the character mentioned; and means extended Within said cylinder for releasing said bolt.
8. A milk-bottle holder, comprising a pocket-forming member adapted to be fixedly mounted on a standing structure adjacent an entrance opening thereof; a connecting member adapted for insertion in the pocket formed by said pocket-forming memher; a lock case, having a spring-actuated protruding bolt, said case being pivo-tally mounted on said connecting member; a spring-seated bar Within said case to look said bolt in extended position When out of service; a cylinder mounted on said case to circumfold the top of a bottle of the character mentioned; and means extended Within said cylinder for releasing said bolt, said means being disposed adjacent the center of said cylinder, to be operated upon by contact With the closure cap of said bottle.
