GLOVE SHAPING AND SETTING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARCHIBALD B. Toznn, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Glove Shaping and Setting Devices, of which I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The objects of the invention are to provide a device for quickly and automatically stretching and setting the fingers and palm portions and wrists and arms of a glove such as a ladys glove having long wrists and arms, after cleaning, by means of mechanical action and a heating instrumentality. And the objects are to provide a device having increased etficiency and practicability in the art and of simple construction and convenient for use.
Heretofore it has been found difficult to stretch a finger or thumb or the palm portion and especially long wrist and arm portions of a kid glove in one direction without correspondingly reducing its dimensions in the other direction, that is if the palm wrist, and arm portions of a kid glove should be stretched lengthwise to their full capacity and set in this position it will be found that they have been too much reduced in width to fit the hand which formerly wore them; also the same result would ensue if the stretching were performed only laterally on any one of the glove portions, sincethe width" would then become out of proportion to the length.
The particular objects of the invention are therefore to provide a form of device in which the stretching of the kid can be accomplished simultaneously in two directions, and therefore when set a proper proportion of the parts is maintained without distortion.
To accomplish these objects the mechanism provided consists in the stretching and forming means, and in means for applying heat simultaneously to these devices where they make direct contact with the kid, and further consists in the combination and arrangement of parts and construction of details as hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a side elevation of the device showing tapered finger forming devices and a separable palm and arm stretching device,*and the operating means for the separable de vice; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device from below; Fig. 4: is an enlarged detail in front elevation of the separable formers for the palm, wrist and arm portions; Fig. 5 is a side elevation thereof; Fig. 6 is a plan view of the same showing several pipe connections for steam and the products of condensation and air.
In these views 1 is a standard or frame provided preferably with a table top 2 upon which the gloves to be treated can be conveniently laid; 3, 3 are hollow smooth metal fingers, preferably in the vertical position, secured in the table and over which the fingers of the kid gloves can be stretched and set one at a time. These forming fingers 3, 3 are preferably tapered toward their outer ends. The fingers of the gloves are placed admitted therein, and the act of setting is accomplished almost immediately as soon as the fingers are properly stretched in both directions. As soon as set the glove fingers can readily be removed from the tapered metal fingers. In order to heat these forming fingers at the extreme tips it is preferable to first provide a quick outlet for the air contained in the hollow tips and to provide for a primary circulation of the steam, hence the steam is admitted through a central tube 4 longitudinally placed in each forming finger, the inner extremity of which isspaced from the tips of the forming finger so as to admit the steam therein freely. The air within each forming finger and the condensed steam finds its outlet in the annular passage 5 surrounding the central tube. In this form of construction the upper end of the finger will always remain the hottest and the drying and setting of the finger will be continuously effected. These forming fingers or formers are suitable for shaping the finger and thumb portions of the kid glove. The palm, wrist and arm port ons require a somewhat different treating apparatus, being much larger and of different shape. The forming device for this portion is constructed of two closely adjacent formers, one of them preferably fixed rigidly in the .table in a similar manner to forming fingers 3, 8 and the other 7 is adapted to move away from the former 6 so that when the palm and arm portions of the glove are placed over both the formers, a lateral pressure can be exerted thereon. These palm and arm stretching formers 6 and 7 are preferably semi-cylindrical with their sides diverging toward their upper ends, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, and are hollow, and the former 7 is mounted upon the water outlet pipe 8 which has a swiveled connection at 9 to permit a swinging movement of the former. Internal tubes 11, 11 supply steam to the interior of these formers 6 and 7 in the same manner that steam is supplied to the fingers 3,3.
The formers 6 and 7 are connected to a common steam pipe 12 which is formed in a sufliciently large loop to permit of free move ment of the movable former, and a steam pipe 13 is connected with the stationary former 6. Steam pipes P, P are connected also with the inner tubes of the fingers 3, 3 and X are the pipes for exhaust steam water and air.
X is a chamber into which the formers 6 and 7 both exhaust.
The former 7 can be brought into close engagement with the former 6 when they are inserted into the arm of a glove by means of the treadle 17, pivoted at 18 in the frame, and a link 18 and a rock arm 19 secured to the extension 20 of the swinging former below its swiveled point. As soon as the palm, wrist and arm portions of the glove are placed overthe two formers the treadle is released and a tension spring 24 secured to a second rock arm 25 upon the extension 20 exerts a lateral and elastic and automatic constant pressure upon the palm wrist and arm portions of the glove by automatically separating the formers. Different sized springs may be substituted to vary the tension to exert the desired degree of lateral pressure upon the palm to tend to stretch the same in a lateraldirection, and the tension required to stretch the glove lengthwise is obtained by pulling the glove oil from the formers against the pressure of the spring. The automatic action of the spring insures that the pressure will be maintained constant as the long arm is being pulled off from the formers, and as the arm increases in size, so that the formers will conform themselves automatically to changes in size of the glove. The extremities of the formers 6 and 7 are enlarged at E, E to add to the tension upon the glove when pulling it off the former, so as to always maintain a proportion between the tension upon the glove in a longitudinal direction, and the lateral pressure thereon provided by the spring actuated former, the effect being to leave the glove stretched and set practically in its original size and shape. If the automatic lateral pressure obtained by the spring should be insuflicient as in case of a particularly thick or tough skin, a second treadle 26 can be employed to which the lower end of the spring 24 can be attached, and a greater degree of lateral pressure can be applied therewith by foot power. At all increased pressures applied by means of the pedal the spring will cause the formers to conform themselves to the shape of the glove and exert a substantially uniform pressure thereon. The acts of stretching and setting are so quickly accomplished that the glove can be placed upon the formers, the pressure applied and the glove almost simultaneously drawn off from the formers and it will be found to be properly set and stretched in both directions. The formers which have enlarged outer ends provide the required automatically applied friction to give the necessary tension when pulling off the glove.
I claim 1. In a glove stretching and setting device, a stationary former and a corresponding former opposed thereto and movable thereto and therefrom, said formers insertible into the palm, wrist and arm of a glove, a device for heating said formers, a device for maintaining a continuing yielding lateral tension upon the movable former and a device for increasing the tension upon the glove at the time of drawing the glove off from the formers.
2. In a glove stretching and setting device, a pair of formers one of which is movable to and from the other former, a device for heating said former, a device for maintaining a continuous automatic elastic lateral tension upon one former, said device tending to automatically separate the formers, devices for increasing the tension upon the glove while drawing the same from the former, and a device for bringing the movable former toward the corresponding former.
3. In a glove stretching and setting device, the combination with a pair of oppositely arranged hollow formers, of supporting means therefor, one former pivoted at its lower end in said supporting means, said formers enlarged at their upper ends to exert a substantially uniform pressure upon the glove when drawn off from the former, and a spring attached to said pivoted former, said spring tending to separate said formers, and to provide elastic lateral tension upon said glove, and means for conducting a heating agency to the formers.
4. In a glove stretching and setting device, a hollow former, a corresponding movable former adjacent thereto, a pipe for conveying a heating agency communicating with both said formers, an exhaust pipe communieating with each said formers, aswiveled connection for the movable former in said conveying pipe, a tension spring adapted to exert a continuous elastic tension on the movable former to separate the formers, and a treadle device for bringing the movable former toward the other former.
5. In-a glove stretching, setting and forming device, a pair of opposed hollow formers, over which the palm wrist and arm portions of a glove are placed, one of which is movable a device for applying automatic elastic tensionto one of said formers to normally separate the same, said formers having enlarged outer ends, said enlarged outer ends adapted to exert a substantially uniform pressure upon the glove when pulling the same off from the formers.
6. In a glove stretching, forming and setting device, in combination opposed formers having curved outer surfaces and enlarged outer ends, means for applying heat tothe formers and to said enlarged ends, means for moving one of the formers relatively to the other, a spring for maintaining a continuous automatic and elastic tension upon the movable former to place the glove under elastic tension.

swiveled in said support thus permitting it to approach and recede from the other former, said support forming a conductor for exhaust steam from both said formers, a steam pipe connecting the formers, and steam pipes extending into said formers, a spring tending to normally separate the formers, and a treadle for closing the formers.
8. In a glove stretching, setting and form ing device, a pair of opposed hollow formers over which the palm, wrist and arm portions of the glove can be placed, one of said formers movable relatively to the other, means for conducting a heating fluid to each of said formers, and for conducting exhaust therefrom, a treadle and lever for closing the formers, a spring for opening the formers,
one of said exhaust tubes in which the movable former is secured, pedal operated means for moving said movable support toward the stationary former, a spring for automatically opening the formers, and for applying elastic tension to the glove, and means for augmenting the action of the spring.
10. In a glove stretching and setting device, a stationary former and a movable former, a device for heating said formers, a device for maintaining a continuous elastic yielding tension upon the movable former, and pedal operated mechanism for approaching the movable former toward the stationary former.
11. In a glove stretching and setting device, formers on which the gloves are stretched, a device for applying heat to said formers, an automatically operating device for applying resilient lateral internal tension to the glove when being drawn ofi from the forming means, and friction providing devices for obtaining longitudinal tension upon the glove when the glove is pulled therefrom, proportional to the lateral internal tension, and simultaneously with the application thereof.
12. In a glove stretching and setting device, separable formers insertible in the glove, a spring tending to automatically separate said formers, and to provide a constant tension upon the glove, and devices on said formers for obtaining longitudinal tension upon the glove, said tension providing spring and tension providing devices operat ing simultaneously in predetermined propor tional power when the glove is being pulled off from the forming means.
