PANIC-BOLT.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JOHN M. MA RTY, a: citizen of the United States, residing at,
Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and; b
State of Ohio, have invented certain. new; and useful Improvements in Panic-Bolts, of which the following is a specification. 1
My invention relates to improvements in panic bolts or locking mechanism for emer-: gency exit-doors, the primary object of the; invention being to provide a generally 1111- proved emergency fire or panic exit bolt, the; present embodiment being particularly de? signed and adapted for use as a panic bolt in securing the doors of school and other buildings in accordance with the laws now in force in this respect.
In accordance with the above, the invent-ion has for its object the provision of a panic door bolt or locking mechanism which may} be readily and expeditiously operated from the inside only to quickly release the door, and when so released, will be automatically latched in its released or unlocked-position; until the latching mechanism is released andl the door bolts returned to their locked posi-? tion by the janitor or other authorized attendant. V
With the above-mentioned and other ends construction arrangement, and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in one of its embodiments in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, of this specification, Figure 1, is a view of the improved panic bolt in its locked position as applied to the inner side of one of the forming a part coors, such as are commonly employed in school buildings Where one of the doors is locked and only used in an emergency and the other is used continuously. Fig. 2, a perspective view of the improved locking mechanism in unlocked or released position, the latching mechanism holding the parts in such unlocked or released position.

operating member 3, the latter being pivotally mounted on an attaching bracket 4, said attaching bracket, in the present instance, eing provided with oppositely arranged bearing lugs 4, between which the latch or bolt operating member 3, is pivoted through the medium of a bearing pin or member 3 extending through the bearing lugs 4*.

The lock rod or bolt 1*, is adjustably connected to the rod or bar 1, through member 6, Said clam-ping member 6, in the present instance, comprising two parts connected by clamping screws 6*, saidclampingmember being secured, in the present instance, to the upper bar-1, by means of a bearing pin 6 s a means for slidably securing or guiding the adjacent ends of the rods or bolts 1, and l in proper position, an attaching guide bracket 7 is provided, said guide bracket 7 being provided with a bearing opening 7 to slidably receive and contain the lower end of the rod or bolt 1*, and a guide slot 7 to receive and contain the upper pivoted end of the rod or bolt 1, the latching device, in the present instance, comprising a spring latch member 8, secured to the side of the clamping member 6, by means of one of the screws 6*, and depending. therefrom, the lower end of said spring latch member being provided on its inner side with a latch head 8, and adapted to bear against one side of the attaching or guide bracket 7, so that when the parts of the locking mechanism are moved to their unlocked or door releasing position, as shown in Fig. 2, of the drawings, said latch head will automatically snap into engagement with the lower portion of the attaching bracket 7, as shown in Fig. 2, and the parts will thus be held in released position as against the action of the weight 5, until the latch member 8, is manually released to permit the parts to return to their normal or looking position.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of my invention Wlll be readily understood.
Having thus described one of the embodidoor released position.
2.- In a panic bolt, a lock rod, a clamping member secured thereto, a lock rod adjustably mounted in said clamping member, an attaching guide bracket for said lock rods, and a spring latch carried by' said clamping member and bearing against one side of said attaching guide bracket whereby said spring latch is adapted to engage said attaching guide bracket when said rods are moved to I door released position.
3.'In a panic bolt, a lock rod, a two-part clamping member detachably connected thereto, a lock rod adjustably secured in said clamping member, an attaching guide bracket provided with a bearing opening slidably receiving and containing said adjustably mounted lock rod, and a latch member carried by said clamping member and adapted to automatically engage with said attaching guide bracket when said lock rods are moved to door released position.
4. In a panic bolt, the combination with a pair of lock rods, and means for moving the latter toward and from each other; of a third lock rod adjustably connected to one of said lock rods, an attaching guide bracket for the latter and the adjacent end of said adjustably connected third lock rod, and a spring latch member carried by said adjustably connected lock rod and adapted to automatically engage with said attaching guide bracket when said lock rods are moved to door released position.
5. A panic bolt, comprising an attaching bracket, a bolt operating member pivotally mounted thereon, a weighted lock rod depending from said bolt operating member, a second lock rod pivotally connected to said bolt operating member, a clamping member connected to said second look rod, a third lock rod adjustably secured in said clamping member, an attaching guide bracket for slidably connecting the a jacent ends of said second and third lock rods, and a spring latch member for automatically locking the parts when moved to door released position.
