To idle 1710172. it may, concern Be It known that I, REIxHoLo KRUM- MING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book Holders or Supports, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in book holders or supports. j

I In the use of books such as temporary post binders now considerably used forcatalogue purposes, there -is a tendency for the book to close when opened and laid upon its back, thereby causing inconvenience and an- The main objects of this invention are:' First, to provide in a temporary binder or loose sheet book, an improved support or holder for supporting the book 'in its open position or with its covers extended. Second, toprovide an improved bookholder or support for temporary binders of the tele- Scoping book type, which does not materially change the construction of such bind ers. Third, to provide an improved book holderor support permanently attached to the book, adapted to be collapsed, which, when collapsed, is entirely out of the way, and one which does notmaterially change or detract from the appearance of the book. Fourth, to provide an improved book holder or support which may be quickly and easily adjusted to operative osition or collapsed to inoperative position.

Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.

I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and'means described in the following specification. I

The invention is'clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.

A structure which'is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a partof this specification, in which:

Referring to the drawing, the covers 1 are provided with cover members 2 and-3. The cover members 2 and 3' are provided with overlapping flange-like back members at and 5 respectively, as is quite common practice in binoers of this type. The binding member 2 is provided with tubular binding post members 6 and 7, while the member 3 is provided with post members 8 and 9 adapted to telescope in the members 6 and 7. The post members are adjustably secured by means ofthe screws 10. The central post member 9 is not'an adjusting member, but is provided with a spring 11 tending to force the cover members apart. As-the details of the binding posts'form no part of parts throughout the' v in an upright position. The back members 4 and 5 are supported in a spaced relation to provide a slot-like the back of the book by the binding post members which are associated to telescope as above described. The bar-like supporting member 12 is pivotally mounted on the inner back member 4 to swing or collapse between the back members',see Fig. I- the pivot 13 being arranged centrally of the supporting member so that it may be swung transversely of the back, as shown in Figs. I, III and IV. Being mounted upon one of the.back members, it does not interfere in any way with the adjustment of the binder, and when the support is collapsed, the binder may be manipulated and handled as though the support were not present.

It may be readily adapted for other types ot'binders or even permanently bound books provided with suitable recesses or openings in their backs adapted to receive the supporting member.

I have not attempted to illustrate or describe the various modifications which I contemplate as such "modifications will, I believe, be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which thiyinventlon iieelates.

.-I desire, however, to be understood as'elaimmg my improvements specifically in the form illustrated as well as broadly within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention,

what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a temporary binder, the combination with. the cover members provided with overlapping back members, means for ad- Justably connecting sa1dcover members,

said back membersbeingsupported in a spaced relation, and a supporting bar. pivotally mounted on the inner back memberto swing between the back members or to a position transverse of the back members.

3. In a temporary binder, the combination'with the cover members provided with overlapping back members, adjusting means for said binder whereby said cover members are adjust ably connected, and a supporting bar disposed between the back members and pivotally mounted to one of them to swing between them, the cover member having the outer back member thereon being longitudinally slotted to permit the'supporting bar being swung through the slot to a posltion transverse of the back members.

4. In a temporary binder, the combination with the cover members provided with overlapping back members, means whereby said back members are adjustab1y,connected, and a support mounted on one of said back members to collapse between the same.,

5. In a temporary hinder, the combination with the cover members provided with overlapping back members means whereby said back members are ad]ustably connected, and a support mounted to collapse between the back members or to beextended transversely thereof.

6. A book support comprising in combination, the cover members provided with back members supported in a spaced relation, and a support member pivotally mounted between the ,back members to swing between them or to a position transverse thereof.

.7. A back support-com rising'in combination, a back having a ongitudinal slotlike opening therein, and a supporting mem= 'berpivotally mounted in said opening to collapse into the opening or to be swung transversely of the back, the supporting member being inclosed by the back when in its collapsed position.

8. A back support comprising in combination, a back having an opening therein, and a supporting member mounted in said opening to collapse therein or to be extended transversely of the back, the supporting member being inclosed by the back when in its collapsed position.
