BOTTLE CLOSURE OR SEAL.

To all 101mm 2'15 may concern Be it known that I, \Vnamm B. THOMSON, a resident of Ghicago,county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle Closures or Seals, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in bottle closures or seals, and has special relation to that variety of bottle closure or seal which consists of a' thin disk of cork or other suitable material held upon the mouth of the bottle by a metal disk, the edge of which is crimped around a head or ridge provided upon the neck of the bottle.
\Vith this variety of bottle closure or seal it has heretofore been necessary, or at least extremely desirable, to employ a special tool for the removal of the closure or seal from the bottle, and it is the object of my present. invention to provide such a seal which may be easily removed from the bottle without the employment of a special tool, or, in fact, any tool for that purpose.
I attain the above object by means of the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which-- Figure 1 is a plan of my improved seal; Fig. 2 is a central section of my new seal in position upon the mouth of a bottle, and Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but after the corrugation has been depressed and the sides of the seal pulled from the bottle. Fig. t is an elevation of my new seal in position upon the mouth of the bottle.

My improvement may be conveniently cmbodied in the form of bottle closure or seal at present most widely known and extensively employed, which comprises a thin disk 1 of cork or other suitable material, adapted to fit over the mouth of a bottle and contact with the edges 2 thereof, and a metal disk 3, the edges 4 whereof are crimped about a ridge 5 provided upon the bottle, so as to hold the disk 1 in contact with the mouth of the bottle and supply suflicient rigidity to constitute the said disk a closure and seal for the bottle.
My present invention consists in providing centrally of the metal disk 3 an outwardly extending crimp or corrugation t3, the length of which is so proportioned as not to. extend above the portion of the disk 1 which contacts with the edges 2 of the Specification of Letters Patent.

mouth of the bottle, and the width of which is such as not to remove any substantial portion. of the metal of the disk 3 from contact with the top of the. disk 1.
The crimped edges of the disk 3 may be conveniently slit or scored at points 7 transverse to the crimp or corrugation 6, so that they will more easily break when the corrugation or crimp is collapsed.
It will now be seen, especially by reference to Fig. 3, that upon collapsing the central portion of the corrugation (i, by passing it against any edge, the metal disk 3 will be shortened along that meridian, and the crimped edges of the disk along that meridian will be pulled from engagement with the head or ridge 5 upon the neck of the bottle, after which the seal may be readily lifted off with the fingers.
llaving described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A bottle closure or seal comprising a disk of sealing material, and a metal disk the edges whereof are crimped so as to adapt them to engage the neck of a bottle and hold said sealing disk in position, a centrally disposed outwardly extending transverse corrugation in said metal disk, the forcing inwardly of which will push the portions of the seal opposite the ends thereof from gripping position.
2. A bottle closure or seal comprising a disk of sealing material, and a metal disk the edges whereof are crimpcd so as to adapt them to engage the neck of a bottle and hold said sealing disk in position, a centrally disposed outwardly extending transverse corrugation in said metal disk, the forcing inwardly of which will push the portions of the seal opposite the ends thereof from gripping position, the crimpcd edges of said metal disk being slit to facilitate the bending thereof.
3. A bottle closure or seal comprising a disk of scaling material, and a metal disk the edges whereof arc crimped so as to adapt them to engage the neck of a bottle and hold said scaling disk in position, a centrally disposed outwardly ext/ending transverse corrugation in said metal disk, the forcing inwardly of which will push the portions of the seal opposite the ends thereof from gripping position, the crimped edges of said metal disk being scored to facilitate the bending thereof.
4. 'A bottle closure or seal comprising a disk of sealing material, and a metal disk the edges whereof are crimped so as to adapt them to engage the neck of a bottle and hold said sealing disk in position, the crimped edge of said metal disk being slit at substantially diametrically opposite points, a
corrugation disposed centrally of said disk so as not to extend over the lip of the bottle and so as to extend transversely to the slits so that it Will strengthen said disk in normal condition, but when forced inwardly will cause the corrugations opposite the ends thereof to be pushed away from their gripping position.
