Description

N. PETERS, FHOTO-LTHOGRAFHER, WASHINGTON, Dv Cy To `all yzrlulmm't 'may conccrn-- l y 4 Be known that I, Jnssn A. Donn, oi Williamsport, 1n the county of Lycoming and in the State of do hereby declare that lthe following duit-d sans* x 3151i @imita f l.Lasse A." Donn., or wrtmnnsron'r; PENNSYLVANIA y Letters maar No. 107,886, dated october 4,1870.
- `lIVIPITiVEIVi'EIQ'I IN SAW-MILLS.
The Schedule referred lto in these Letters Patent and vmaking part of the same Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Gates for SawingA Logs; and is a full, clear, and exact description thereof','reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to thc letters of lreference marked thereon, ,in which drawing- Figure lfis a-front elevation of my device;
' Figure 2 is a sideelcvation of the same; and
" Figure 3-is a vertical cross-section of the top of t `the gate on the line xxfof fig. 1. i
Letters oflikejname and kind refer to like parts ir each of the figures.` s
.Thenature of my invention relates to saw-gates, constructed and arranged for' slabbing logs, and for sawing logs into lumber; and f The invention `consists in the means employed for making two vertical up and down saws,- laterally and l independently adjustable vwhile in motion, and in the combination and arrangement of its variousd parts, all as'more particularlyhereinafter described.
A represents the sawgate, fwhich is intended Vto be secured in any ordinary method in a sawfmill, `the motive power being'lapplid toityin any usual way.' f
This gate is constructed'with two side pieces,`B, arranged perpendicularlyand made solidly, of suitp able' material, with a top, 0, and a bottom, D, each.`
composed of two pieces of metal, of the form shown.
in the drawing, which pieccscross the side pieces at right angles, and are let into them near their upper and lower ends respectively,`and properly secured thereto.l l l j Y p "i .The ends C' and D of these top and bottom pieces project a short distance beyond the outsides of theside piecesbeforenamed.
Two saws, E, are strained to said top and bot- "tom pieces by` means"of straps, ll and Ff, which bend respectively up over the top piecc, and Ydown over the bottom piece aforesaid.
"lhe strap [1".embra.ces` a truck, G, more fully `described hereinafter, and projects a little above said.
trnck, whcre it has 1a' slot, a, passing through both sides of it. A j y The top `of the truck G has a `correspondingr groove, through whichl slot` and groovepasses a `wedge-key, b, upon the under side of azlocking-key, c,
i whose' upturned shoulders embrace the outsides of the strap,l and keep them together, while the key b secures the strap andftrucktogether, and servesv to` strainv the saw. d.
rJhe bentl portion or the bight of the-strap, exf
tending below the bottom of the top piece (l, has a slot, d, in it, of sufficient size to admit the end' of the saw, which is held 'in place there by a pin, c, which passes through it.
The .lower end of the saw is attached iu similaimanner to the strap F, and said strap is arranged, .with regard to the bottom pieceD andV its truck G,
like the strap F, except .that it does not project below said truck,V and is directly secured to it by screws. 1
Rods H pass vertically through the ends G and D', rotating in them, on each side of the gate, and have at either end lbevel-gears I, which imesh at the top and bottom'with bevel-gears J, which, in turn, are secured to the rods K, whichl pass through and rotatein the top `and bottom ends oi' the side pieces B and the trucks G. Y
The last named rods have screw-threads cut in them, to lit into corresponding screw-threads `in the trucks G, and have, also, shoulders f next the ont-- sides of the-side pieces B, so that they may not havev lateral play in their bearings.
The length of each pair of these-'rods is a little less than the width ofthe whole gate.
y The trucks G, of the shape portrayed in fig. 1,
have offsets g at their bases, whichcontain 4rollers h, which turn in semicircnlar bearings in said oisets,
and cause the trucks to roll smoothly upon the top and bottom of the-frame.
The rollers having a greater diameter in their'centers, and less under the hearings, are thus made with shoulders, which press at either end against the inner sides of the plates composing the top piece C and bottom piece D, and are thus secured against lateral deviation.
The rods H pass up and 'down through suitable bearings L near the center of the frame, which bearings have, upon their upper front port-ions, bevelgears M, perforated in the center, so as to admit the passage of the rods H through them, and permit them to turn freely' upon said rods, which, bevclgears, in turn, mesh with bevel-gear N, secured to shaftsj, passing through the bearings L from front A to rear.
Upon the4 rear ends ofthe shafts just named handwheels O are properly attached.-
These bearings are also secured to two vertical guides P, each in rear of the side pieces B, upon which the sawframe also traverses up and down,
said guides passing through suitable arms secured to said side 'pieces `immediately above and below the *cross pieces D and G respectively.
. In the operation of thisdevice each of the saws E canbe adjusted laterally and independently of each other, so that thegate may be used for slabbing logs,
ing,r lumber, so that a. boa-rd may be taken iiom one' side :md :t plank from the other; and this adjust'- ment may be made while the saws are in motion, and
without shutting oi the power.
Having thus described this device,
Vha-t I claim therein as my invention is- 1. The trucks G, constructed as described :in shown, in combination wit-h the top and bottom pieces C and D, and the screws K, for the purposes set forth.
2.' The combination of 'the trucks G, the top and bottom' pieces C and D, the screws K, and the sewgnte'A, substantially as described :md shown, for the purposes set -forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 15th day of August, 1870.
