DAMPER-OPERATING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES D. PArnnsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented new anduseful Improvements in Damper-Operating Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates broadly to the class of damper operating device and. more specifically to such devices which are preferably mechanically manipulated.
An ordinary clock may be used in connection with my invention, thus saving the owner the expense of having to purchase a device embodying the clock or in other words, it will be readily appreciated that if the device had to be manufactured with the clock it would cost the purchaser a great deal more than it he could use the single device in connection with a clock of his own.
My invention is especially adapted for use in connection with the ordinary alarm clock, the alarm being set at a certain time so that when it is actuated, the manipulation of the operating device will occur thereby opening or closing the damper in the stove or furnace.
Broadly my invention consists of a bracket secured upon a suitable support and supported through the medium of a pair of projecting arms, and an ordinary clock, the operating lever of the device being in en gagement with the key projecting from the alarm mechanism of the clock. The operating lever referred to is in turn partly in en gagement with a ratchet wheel upon which is wound a cable normally holding the damper door elevated. It is now apparent that when the alarm goes oil, the key will be revolved thereby throwing the operating lever out of engagement with the ratchet wheel and allowing the damper to close or if the cable is connected in a certain manner, open.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention relates to such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like Specification of Letters Patent.

In the accompanying drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, the numeral 10 designates the body portion thereof which is in the form of a bracket secured to a suitable support through the medium of the screws 1].. I do not limit myself to this specific form of sup port for the bracket nor do I claim the specific fastening means for the bracket, but desire to point out that these have been merely shown to illustrate the operativeness of my invention.
An extension 12 isformed upon the bracket and supported at its forward extremity is a substantially semicircular supporting member 13, the latter having ofiset portions 14 and 15 formed at its extremities as is clearly shown. Arms 16 project from the offset portions above mentioned, forwardly and as shown in Fig. 2 support the clock which is adapted to actuate the operating lever. An extension 17 is formed upon the offset portion 14 and supports through the medium of a pin 18 the operating lever 19. The operating lever consists of a downwardly projecting extension 20 at its rear extremity, a tooth depending intermediate its ends as shown at 21, and an upwardly extending projection 22, the latter being disposed directly above the operating key 23 of the alarm mechanism.
A wheel 24 is provided which has ratchet teeth 25 upon its periphery and has projecting inwardly an arm 26 which is supported upon the bracket pin through the medium of the pin 27. For purpose of manipulating the wheel, a lever 28 is provided thereon and greatly adds to the efiiciency and operativeness of my device. The wheel above mentioned is also provided at its rear side with a drum 29 upon which is wound a cable 30 as is clearly shown in Fig. 2. One end of the cable is fast upon the drum, while the other end has connection with the damper door.
When my invention is as shown in Fig. 1 and the door open, the alarm is set at a certain time by the operator. Now when the alarm goes ed and the key 28 is rotated, the
operating lever may be raised so as to throw the tooth or projection 21 out of engagement with the teeth on the wheel and allow the door to fall through action of gravity. When the alarm stops, the arm will again fall back into position and the operator, by the simple manipulation of the lever 28, may turn the door to its normal position by winding the cable upon the drum.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily comprehended.
I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts, provided, however, such changes fall within the scope of the subjoined claims. 7
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A damper operating device including a drum, teeth arranged on the periphery of one of the drum flanges, a plurality of cables carried by said drum the one end of each of which is in engagement therewith and the opposite end in engagement with the damper, a clock supporting bracket pivotally engaged with said drum, lever pivotally mounted on said brackets, a tooth formed on said lever and approximately midway the ends thereof for engagement with the teeth of said drum, one of the ends of said lever being offset and engaged with an alarm key of a clock, whereby to disengage said tooth from said drum, and means carried by said drum for facilitating the rotation thereof for winding said cables thereon.
2. A damper operating device including a drum, teeth arranged on the periphery of one of the drum flanges, cables, the one end of each of Which is in engagement with said drum and the opposite in engagement with the damper, a clock supporting bracket pivotally mounted on said drum, said bracket comprising a substantially semicircular plate, a pin carried adjacent each end of said plate for engagement with the periphery of the clock, and a port-ion depending from the intermediate portion of said plate for engagement with said drum,a lever pivotally mounted on said bracket, a tooth formed on said lever approximately midway the ends thereof for engagement with the teeth of said drum, one of the ends of said lever being oifset for engagement with the alarm key of the clock, and a handle extend- I ing laterally from said drum for facilitating the operation thereof for the purpose specified.
