Description
` f newlines. BLAKE To all lwhom it mayconcera Beit known that I,"E D W A.RD S. BLAKE, of Pitts: burg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Penn- Sylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Rolls for Crushing andPulverizing-Machines; R and Ir d o hereby declare that the following is a'fulland. exact description thereof, reference being hadto the accompanying.drawiugand to the letters of "reference i markedthereon;- i i The nature of `1 uy invention consists iu the met-bod hereinafterdeseribedfor fitting and securing' a detached surfaceou the body or axis of the `rolls of crushing orpnlveriziiigmachines.v
To enable `others skilled inthe art `to make and use luy invention, I wiltproceedto describe moreffully its construction.
'In the `accompanying di "my'speciicationl i i i Figure lisa side view of a. roll of a'crusllng and `pulverizingruachine,1 s aidrollf` being provided with a detachable surface. a y `lf`igure2 is a longitudinal section of the same when vtut through-at liney ofig.- `1 A Figure 3 is altransverse section oft-he sinne when ja\vin g,g which forms part of cut through at liney' of fig. 2. t
` Figure 4is a transverse section ofthe axis or'body of thcroll atline y. f 'i M Figure 5isa transverse section of the filling used for securing the detachable surface to theaxis or bodyof the roll at 'linea/. Figure 6 isla transverse section of the detached surface of the -roll atline yf;
In the accompanying drawing.- i jA represents the axis or body of the." roll.
`1B represents thelliug, which is placedbetween the inner` surface of tliedetached surface() and th'e Taxis or. body A ofthe ro i y Drepresentsa' \key seat, a pai-tief which is made in the ax'is or body A ofV the roll, and the other part beugintheiillingB.
' The method of constructing, arranging, and securing the several parts together are as follows: f The axis o r bodyAof the rolls is placed in a turning-lathe, `and turnedto the desired size.- It is after body A `may be cast withzthe key-seat'formed by the Steering process, andthe axis or body A thus made wlnay' befused without `the labor and trouble ofmanipe ulatiug and turniugit in a turning-lathe.
` The detached surface G may Ibe cast of hard castiron` or cast-steel, or it may be formed of cast-steel by the forging process, and afterwardsftempered to the desired degree ofvhardness.` A ,t t
The partsl A and G being constructed as described,v
they -arethen arranged concentric to eachother. "The r keyw is placed in the l ey`seat 'D of lthe axis or body `wardlprovided with thekey-se'at D; or the axis or midline .onrIrTsBURdQ PENNSYLVANIAQ tutefrmntfnt. 107,s5s,dat ea'oaober 4, 1870.
\ iMPRovEMEN'r iu .RoLvLsiou eRusI-uNe ANDrPuLvsnlzmemacumrs.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettere` Patent and making part o! thefa'ame A, having the parts 4A and G arranged concentric to each other in a mold or on a .bloek,`p repared for the purpose of holdingV t-h'e parts A and C in juxtaposition.
' lhe space between the innerwalls o f the detached surface" O and the axis or body Afis filled withmolten drietal, 'or a melted alloy. VExperiencehasdemonfv strated that zine will be very suitable'for this filling,
gea/led, the surplus part of theV filling (the pouring gate, orother projecting part or parts, is `cnt away.
lheroll is thenready foruse. v
It will be readily observed that, by. making the axis or body A of the roll of'anniformsize, a shortl maudrel or core could be used for curing out the filling 1 3,
` and thereby t it properly on the axis or body A.
The advantage ofthe hereinbefore described method for fitting and'securing'a detached surface en the rolls of a crushing and pulverizing-machine consists in the saving of labor,- time, and expense in fittingl and sel curing the surface O' on the axis orbody A, 1t being almost i |npossible, by the old 1nethod'to vmake a.
close' and proper fit in the joint 4betweeutlle parts C and A I Another and .very great ,advantage of ttingthe parts A and O together in the manner hereinbefore f described, consists in avoiding the liability of the detached surface breaking when a4 pressure -is brought to bear on it in the crushing process, 'for `it is very apparent that au imperfect joint Abetween the parts A.
and() will tend to weakness on the part of thedetached surface O, and that aperfcct joint lwill add to its strength.
' A further advantageof my improvement consists in beng'enabled to fit and Vadjust .the parts Aand C l togetherv with -greatease and facility, and also being enabled to keep ou'hand a supply of detached surfaces, C,- which will perfectly iit tlleaxis or body A,
and which'ma .y"be remov ed` and replacediou with` thegreatest ease and facility.
and advantages of my improvement,-
What I claimf as of my invention is- The corubinatiou, inthe rolls forcrushing and pnl-` verizing-machines, of the body A and surface C, when secured by'a` filling, B, substantia1ly as herein de'-v scribed, and for the purpose set forth.
' EDW. S. BLAKE.
