vThe Schedule referred to-in these Letters Patent and making parl: of the same.
To all whom it'may concern: l
Be it known that I, REUBEX A. HUToHIxsoX, of Bergen, in the county of Hudson and in the State` ot `New Jersey, have `invented. certain newv and useful Improvements in Grate-Bars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, 'and exact descriptionlthereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawingmaking apart of this specification, nwhich i l -A i n .l Figure 1 Vis `a plan view of the upper side of my improved grate-bars, as secured in relative "position Figure 2 is a ve1tical longitudinal section of the same, on the line a: :c of tig. l;
. Figure 3 is a top wiew of the sectional rod ein-i ployed in connecting together the bars; and
Figure 4; is v`a sidcclevation of a washer, for use upon said rod andbetwcen said bars. l Letters of like name and kind refe'r to like parts in each of the figures;
My invention is an improvement in the means employed for connecting together grate-bars; and
It consists, principally,.in securing grate-bars iu their properrclative positions, by. `means, ot' one lor more-rods, passing horizontally. and `transversely through suitable openingswithin the same, substan- -tially as hereinafter set forth. g: l
It also consists inthc peculiar construction ofthe n rod, employed for connecting together the bars, by
means of which the length ot' said rod may bc varied inraccordance with the number ot bars used, as here# inaftershown. V
It finally consists in securing the desired lateral adjustmcnt of the bars, with relation to each other, by meansof washers, interposed.betweenthe samc,`and
`supported by thc com'iectingaods, substantially as and forthe purpose specified.`
`In the annexed drawing-- l' `and A represent a series of gratebars, `having .l `the usual form,and each provided with two or more bosses, .B, projecting horizontally outward from opr posite sides thereof, with their vertical faces parallel with the sides of saidbars.
As seen in iig. 2. thesides of -the bossesB are vertical and parallel, until within about one-fourth their length `fronrthe upper and-lower ends thereof, from whence said sides extend inward, atan angle of about fortyfve degrees, and, meeting, furnish adoublc in` eline, theobject of which is to throw toeither sidcV thevashcs falling between said bars, and thus prevent any from lodging so as to obstruct the free passageof air throughthe grate.` s Passing horizontally and transversely through cach boss, is a rectangular opening,having its longest axis faced vertically, which receives a corresponding metal Vbar O, that, passing through the entire set of "bars, confines them in their proper relative positions,'and prevents displacement-trom the action ot' the fire or from accident.
Although the rod C may be formed of one piece, it
desired, it has been found advantageous to construct it lof a series of short bars, c, having a length equal to the distance between the centers ofthe outer of three bars, and a thickness equal to one-half that of said rodO, so that, when placed in position, within said bars, with the sections brcaking- ]'oints,7 as shown in 'g.3, cach section shall hare abcaring within three The end sections c' are the full thickness of the bar C, from their outer ends inward, one-half their length, and, from thencel to their inner'cnds, are tenoned out so as to receive the end of one of thesections c.
As thus constructed, the rod C may be adjusted to position or removed, or any one of the grate-bars taken out,` without intertbringwith and requiring the rcmoval of the entire grate, in addition to which the cost of repairs to said rod is materiallyr lessened, as, when l an/y portion becomes warped or burned out, it can be" replaced at a comparatively small expense.V
` For use in different furnaces, it being required that the grate-bars should bc capable of a relatively lateral adjustment, so as to vary the width of the air-passages, between the same', thc lugs upon the sides of the bars:
are constructed of such a thickness as to enablel said bars to be placed as closely together as is ever required, while, in o rder to increase the space between the same, and insure their relative lateral positions, one or more washers, l), having the general form of said lugs, are placed uponeach connectingfrod and 'between each grate-bar, as shown in tig. 1.
Having thus fully set forth thenature andr merit-s` \Vitnesses:
J. M.l KEEP, NV. A. NICHOLS.
