teams- To all whom. it may concern.' j
Be it known that I, AUoUsrUsPJ BizNNiii'r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the countyand State of New' York, have invented a new and Improved Ornament-Holder for Hats, of which the following is a full, clear, Vand exact description.
By the rules of fashion it is customary to wear different hats for different occasions. Therefore, a person desiriiig'to be fashionable must have several hats, which is expensive and requires a large amount. of space. To obviate these diiiiculties, I have invented an inex ensive holding device which can be easi y secured to 'a hat and which will quicky `engage any desired ornament, such as a eather, ribbon, etc., at any angle, and which ornament can be easily disengaged to admit another when it is desired to use the same hat for a dierent social function. The holder can also engage more than one ornament, of dierent kinds if desired, at the saine time, and at any desired angle to each other. This is obtained by providing a pair of blanks adapted to engage an ornament, and a member associated with the blanks to keep them inseparable and whereby the blanks are made to engage the ornaments. The blanks are provided with means whereby one of them can be secured to a hat.
The invention consists of the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and fully set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be made to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which like characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views and in which:
Figure 1 shows a hat provided with an1 embodiment of my invention carrying a feather; Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2, Fig. 1; and Fig. 8 is a section Aon line 3 3,

with a corrugated portion 8 bordering the blank." The same face of the blank 5 is provided with a central interioily threaded portion 9 rojecting above the corrugation 8 ofthe vb ank. Threaded into this central portion 9 is a threaded member 10 having at one`en'd a head 11 located on the smooth face of the blank 5. The other end 12 of the member 10 is reduced, so that the threadyed portion of the member 10 forms a shoulder 13. A blank 14 of a size similar to blank 5, provided with a corrugated border 15 similar to corrugation 8, has a central cup ortioii 16 forced away from the face provided with the corrugations and adapted to engage the central portion 9 of blank 5. The cup 16 has a central opening 17 engagin the reduced end 12 of the member 10, with the bottom of the cup resting on shoulder 13 of the member 10 with the reduced end projecting through the opening out of the cup. Secured to this progecting portion 12 of the member l0 by means of a pin 18 is a milled head 19 which prevents the blank 14 from moving on the reduced end 12 but allows the same to revolve on it.l
The blank 14 is provided with a series of apertures 20 adapted to register with the pairs of triangular openings 6.
AlVhen the head 19 is caused to rotate, the member 10 will move in or out of the blank 5 and will carry with it the blank 14, therefore, an ornament, or ornaments, can be clamped between the blanks, as can be seen, at any desired angle, as, for example, the feather shown in full and dotted lines in Fig. 1. The apertures 20 provided in the blank 14 are means through which the blank 5 is secured by threads 21 to the hat 22, as the two blanks become inseparable when the head 19 is secured to the member 10 as described. This structure makes an inseparable unit which can be easily attached or detached from a hat, no part of which can get loose when changing ornaments on a at. It can be easily seen that in general, the hats being formed of flexible material the same will iave enough elasticity to give when .the. head 11 of the member 10 is Iforced against the body of the hat.
' ings 2U and 6 in the blanks any desired shape.
Having thus` described my inventiom' what I claim as new and desire Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described,a blank having aplurality of pairs of ad'acent openings providing securable means or the blank, said blank havin@r on one of its faces a bordcringcorrugate portion and a` cent-ral interiorlythreaded portion projecting beyond the plane of said corrugated to secure by portion; a threaded member in engagement with said central portion and having 'a head' at one end and a reduced portion at the opposite end, said reduced portion projecting beyond the said central portion; a second blank engaging said threaded member and having a p urality of op register with the said pairs of openings and through which said first blank can secured, said second blank having a corrugated portion facing the first mentioned corrugatedA ortion, and a. central cup portion adapte to engage thesaid central projection and having a central opening engaged b the said reduced portion of said threadmember; and a head secured to said reduced portion beyond said cup portion for operating said threaded member and whereby said. lanks become inseparable, and the said second blank can moveto and from the said first blankand rotate on the said reduced end. v
2. In. a device of the class described, a blank having means whereby it may be securedto an object and a central interiorly threaded portion projecting beyond the surcan also be of,
enings adapted to vcured to facfeof the'blank; a threadedimember engatging said central portion and having a 1e uced end projecting beyond said central portion; a second blank on said reduced por tion having means adapted to re ister with the securable lmeans "on the rst blank through which the said 'rst blank is secured, said blanklialvingl va central cup portion adapted to engage the'said central projection and having a central opening engaging said reduced portion of said threaded member; and means secured to said reduced portion above said cup portion whereby said threaded member is operated, causing said `blanks to move to or from each other, said blanks having means on their facing surfaces for gripping an object engaged be- Itween them.
3. In a device of the class described, a blank having means whereby it can be scan object and a threaded central opening; a threaded member in said opena second blank secured to said threaded member adapted to rotate on same and move with same to or from the said first blank, means making said blanks and threaded member an inseparable .unit, said second blank having means therein adapted to register with said securable means 1n said first blank and through which said unit is secured.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AUGUSTUS PEMBERTUN BENNETT.
