Description
. `To all whom mag/concerns y ABe it known that I, WILLIAM-F. ItronAnnsox, of Pittsburg, in the 4county of Allegheny, andl Stateof the upper 'en'ds of which are piv ,l ot' levers f, which are pivoted one on` each side ot the tft at... am
WILLIAM. RicHARDsoN, on PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA'.
" i I Letters Patent No. 107,723, dated September 27, 1870.
IMPRovgMENT 1N sfEAM-ENemEs.
HPF-..-
g The Schedule'eerred toin these 4Letters Patent and makng'part of the 'same Pennsylvania., .haveinvented anew and useful Iniprovement in Steam-Engines; Vand I do `hereby-'tdeclare that the following is full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had'to the ,accompanyin g drawing and to the letters andfignrcs ot refer-- encemarked thereon. ,i
The` nature of my invention consists in'so constructing a'steam-engine `that its cylinder shall :be
provided with three steam-portsfsuitable exhaustopenmg or openings, and-two pistons, the rear one of.
` which transmits its motion to the ciallk-shaift of the engine, through thc medium ofthc side levers and h rods geared t-o the main cross-head, as described.
To enable others slilled inthe `art to make and use my invention, Iwill proceed to describe its constructiolrand operatioin v In the accompanying drawing which forms part of my specificationf r Figure 1, sheet A, is a` side chevation ot' vmy improvement iltsteain-engines.
Figures 2 and 3, sheet rB, arellongitiulinal and 'vertical sections ot the cylinders, pistons, slide-valve, andv steam-chest-.- V y -Fignrc 4, sheet B, isa top viewv or plan of the valve-seat, rcrp'esenting thctarrangcment of` steam- `ports and exhaustopening`.`
g Figure, sheet B, represents the slide-valve when it is inverted;
h Int-he accompanying drawing- A"represents the bed-plate upon which the several parts of the engine are mounted.- v
` A represents `the cylinder, which is provided with two pistons, K K, threesteam-ports, W W and U, a steam-chest, B, and .slide-valve, It, which is provided with exhaust-chambcrs,y2, `3,and`5, and a suppiyopening,.6. i y 4 1 To the end of each `piston-rod y is attached a T- head, as indicated at() and D, which T-hc'ads move t on slides m.
ivote'd to the crank and the end ot' the `shaft ot' thc y-whcelfS.
rlo each side ot' the`T-head() are 'pivoted rods c,
oted tothe upper ends .of my improvement in` steam-engines, andthe rela` tion they bear toeach other, by reference to the `accompanying drawing, and from the foregoing ydescription,xI will, therefore, proceed to describev the operation ofthe herenbet'ore described engine.
The steam enters the steam-chest B through the pipc I, which is connected to a steam-boiler or other steam-generator. y l
When the slide-valve h is in `the position shown in tig.Y 2, the cylinder is receiving steam through the opening 6 of the slide-valve Il. and steam-port u of cylinder A, and isexhansting' steamthrough the ports W W into the exhaust-. chambers 2, 3, and 5. i When the slide-valve It is in the position shown in lig. 3, the cylinder will be receiving steam through the ports \V W, and the steam between the inner facesy of the.` pistonheads K K will be exhausted through the port u ot' the cylinder, and the exhaustchambers 2 and 5 ofthe slide-valve. i Then the cylinder is receiving steam through vth ports W -W, the heads oi' the'cylinder arc the abutments for the steam rto act against'while moving the while moving the pistons K K toward-eachhen'd ot' the cylinder.` Y The power or motion ot the. piston connected to the T-head C is transmitted to the T-head D through the medium ofthe rods c and y and levers Land the T-head D transmits it and the power of its own piston to the` crank ot' the engine, through the medium of thc pitman. .l
When lthe pistons are moving from the center of the cylinder' toward its ends, the rods c and g move in the direction indicated bythe arrows, marked 8, and when the pistons are moving from the ends ot' the cylinder toward the 'center of it, then `the rods e and y move in the direction indicated by the arrows marked 9.
i Having thus described the nature, construction, and operation of my improvement,
WhatI claim as of my invention is l. The engine herein described, consisting of a cylinder, with two pistons moving in opposite directions, and having their rods attached to cross-heads at their outer ends, thc motion from the rear crosshead communicated to the main one by means ofthe levers and connecting-rods, substantially` as described., 2. In combination with the above', the valve with its ports and slide, constructed as herein described. .WILLIAM F. RICHARDSON.
