Description

' -L 'imam PETERS, PHOTO-LITMGGHAFMER, WASHINGTON D C WILLIAM Inns., or s-HREVEPORT, LOUISIANA.
batters Pat-ent No. 107,688, dated September 27, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALING-PRESSES.
The Schedule referred U3 .in these Letters Patent and making part, of the same- To all whaha/it may concern l:
Be itknownthat I, WILLIAM leen, of Shreveport, in the parislrof Caddo and State t' Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Ealing-Press i and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and.
exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art tolnake .and use the same, refel'-,
ence beinghad tothe accompanving drawing tinming part of Jthis specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved Daling-press.
Figure 'l is an end eier/ation oi' the sinne.
Figure 3 is a detail side view, partly in section, ot' a moditied form of clutch .and level'. l
Similar let-ters ot' reference indicate' corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a. novel construction of' mechanism for working the follower of a lading-press,
.and consists in a new arrangement ot' ii'iction-clutches for working the follower downwardly, and also in a new construction ol" clutch, as hereinafter more fully described.
A in the drawinc' rein'esents the frame ofthe press. It consists ot' the fixed bottoinafhinged ou removable sidcsJ) I), and fixed ends c c.,
lhve followerB projects beyond the ends ot' thc press, through vertical slots of the Hsame, and emb1 aces, at its ends, vertical posts C C, as( shown.
I) D are friction-clutches, pivoted to links (l d, that are pivoted to .the ends of the follower;
These clutches D embrace the square posts 0 C, and serve to retain the follower in the position to which it has beenV lowered.
Each clutch l) is, by a cord, c, connected with .a small windla-ss, 7, which is lmng in the follower, and
4 which can bc locked 'by pawl and ratchet-wheel g.
This windlass serves to hohl the clutch suspended l|oxizo11tally.\v"hen itis desired to elevate the follower.
E is another clutch, ttcd loose around the post C, below the follower.
F is a lever for moving the'lollower up or down.
A link, 71, connects the lever F with the clutch E,
and another link, t7, connects the lever F with' the' follower, as shown in g. 1.
By swinging the lever on its links, the follower will be drawn down at one stroke, and the clutch E let down at the next.' 1
rl`he clutch D locks the follower and makes the upvper link y the fnlcrum ot the lever, while the lower Vclutch is moved down.
,The other link rt'uruishes the fulcru'm while the follower is being drawn down. Itis evident that a lever, F, and clutch E are used at each end of the press.
G is a windlass, which, by means ol'- ropes serves te elevate the' follower when the press is to be set for use. p f
The lever F may, il`- desired, be pivotcd directlyto the clutch E, as in iig 3in which case the lilik h is" dispensed with.
lt will be. noticed that on the outer or operatingl side, the throat ot"each clutch is so formed that the biting or clamping corner 7s is higher than that on the opposite side; thereby greater power is obtained, and the liability of ,slipping in a strain isl prevented.
`Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent* 1 l. The clutches l) l), constructed as described, combined with cord c, windlassf, and pawl and ratchet g, to form a locking device for the follower, as set t'ort-h.
2. lhe locking devices D c f g and fulcrum clutches E E, links h t', and levers F, combined with the projecting follower B, as and for the purpose described.
A clutch for presses, having the biting point la higher on the-outer than the inner side, as and. for the purpose described.
WILLIAM ILER.
