Description

PATENT OEEIc'E.
LYMAN CRAWFORD, OF HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WIPING APPARATUS FOR FEED ANDIOTHER ROLLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 107,667, dated September 27, 1870.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYMAN CRAWFORD, of Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Wiping Attachment for Feed-Rollers and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wiping apparatus for the feed-rollers of carding machinery; and consist-s in a combination, with the rollers, of wiping-plates, one placed above the upper roller and another below the lower ones, each plate having a concave face provided with a wiping-cloth acting on the surface of the roller and a slot behind the wipers, through which the substance wiped from the said rollers and collecting in masses may escape or be removed, the lower wipingplate being also provided with a guard or scraper plate, arranged in conjunction with the lower roller, to prevent any large collections of waste from being carried up by the said roller to the sliver, all as hereinafter described. Y
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved wiping attachment, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the lower wiping-plate, which is for rollerD, and Ethe upper one, forrollerD. B represents the slots in the lower plate for the escape of the waste, and F the slots in the upper one. C is the guard or scraper plate, attached to plate A, and rising up from the rear wall of slot B, behind roller D, as high or nearly as high as the top of it, and curved at the upper part to iit the surface of the roller.
Each wiping-plate is provided with a concave face in advance of the slots, arranged closely to the surface of the roller for which it is intended, so that any wiping cloth, skim or other substance attached to the said surfaces will act on the surface of the roller.
l propose to apply on these concave surfaces-woolen or other cloth having a rough ibrous face, to which the waste fibers on the rolls will become attached when brought against the said cloth by the rotation of the rollers, which turn in the direction indicated by the arrows.
The waste will, although becoming so attached, be rolled up by the rotation of the rollers and forced beyond the wiping substance to the slots in the plates; but some of the fibers will be so interlocked with the said wipers that the mass escaping beyond will be held by theni and accumulate in the slots until, in the case of the lower wiper, the Weight of the waste will cause it to fall through the slot B to the space below,'as a general rule; but if, for any cause, a detached mass should be carried around with the roller, the guard-plate C will detach it.
In the case of the upper wiper, the masses collecting behind the wall of the slot next to the wiper will be forced upward as it accumulates, and may be removed from time to time by the attendant. The amount of waste taken from the upper roller being, however, very much less than from the lower one, the removals will not be very frequent.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The Combination, with the feearoners Dv LYMAN CRAWFORD. Witnesses GUsTAvUs Snow, FRED. E. BLArsDALE.
