To all whom @'25 may concern Be it known that I, OsKAR F. THORN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Planing-Machines, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to planing machines and particularly to machines for planing the frames of pianos, as hereinafter described.
The object of this improvement is to provide a device which will at one operation plane the sides and edges of the piano back with curved surfaces and to provide a simple and eective machine for accomplishing this result.

rllhe invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which7 Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention, Fig. 2, a longitudinal vertical section of the same, Fig. 8, an end view of the same, and Fig. Ll, a fragmental section of the work locking clamp.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a curved track 5 having the highest point of such track immediately under the planing head. The track 5 is provided with ears 6 which are supported by means of adjusting screws 7 threaded in the ears 8 of the supports 9, and is supported in such adjustable supports in a manner to be iiexed in a greater or less curve as desired. Such curvature is altered by means of adjusting the track in the supports 9 by means of the screws 7, as will be readily understood by reference to the drawings.
A car 10 is provided with supporting wheels 1l and axles 12 by which it is mounted on the track 5 and adapted to move longitudinally of such track. The car l0 is provided with guides 13 on its top portion and extended transversely thereof. A. work supporting frame 14 is mounted to slide transversely on the car in the guides 13 to support the work during the planing operation. The frame let is provided with a bar 15 secured in the side portions of its frame, as indicated in the drawings, and said bar 15 is provided with rollers 1G which are adapted to engage the stops 17 upon transverse sliding of such supporting frame la to the side of the car, as indicated in Fig. 3. Such stop 17 also cc-acts with the rollers 16 to forni a pivotal joint for swinging the supporting member 14- to its unloading and loading position. r1Upon swinging the supporting frame 14; to the position indicated in Fig. 3, the work is placed thereon and supported by the hooked end 14 of its lower portion and the adjustable clamps 18 are moved to their engaging position with the work in order to secure the work on said supporting frame 14. Said adjustable clamps 1S are provided with slots 19 and secured to the frame 1e by means of bolts 2O as clearly illustrated. lifter securing the work to the supporting frame la, said supporting frame is swung on its pivotal point at 16 to its horizontal position and slid to its normal position on the car, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 3. The locking clamp 21 is then swung to its engaging position with the cross bars of the piano back, as indicated in Fig. 4. Such locking clamp is provided with a slotfQ formed of such a size that it may be removed from the head 23 of the locking bolt 9A when so desired. The locking member 21 is maintained in clamping position on the cross bars of the piano back by means of the bolt 24, which passes through the car 10 and secured to the lever 25 by means of suitable nuts 26, or any other suitable connecting means. Said lever 25 is pivoted to the car frame as at 27 and provided with a locking catch 28 which is adapted to engage the locking means 29. Such locking means 29 is secured to the under side of the car 10, as indicated in the drawings so that upon downward and transverse movement of the lever 25, the work and supporting frame 14 will be firmly clamped to the top of the car 10.
Cutters 30 are formed with curved cutting edges, as clearly illustrated in the drawings, and secured to the shaft 31 by means of screws 32 which are passed through slots 33 in such cutting blades. rlhe shaft 81 is mounted in suitable housings 341 in a manner to be rotated by a suitable source of power connected therewith by means of the pulley 35 carried on said shaft. The car 10 ing 3%, as clearly indicated in Figs. 2 and 8 so that upon rotation of the shaft 3l thecar, .supporting the work7 will be moved on the track under the cutting blades 30 to effect the planing of the piano back at one passage of such cutting blades. The work in .passing over the curved track under vthe cutting blades v20 will cause the surface of the work to be planed in a curve, as indicated particularly in Fig. 2, `and the curvature 4of the cutters 8O will effect the planing of the back in a curve as indicated particu.- larly in F ig. 8, thus forming all of the sides of such piano back in the curves, as clearly illustrated.
l/Vhile l have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into ezect, this is capable of variation and modification Without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of ,the appended claims.
