JOHN KILDUFF, OF JOHNSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINATION FORGE AND PRESS.
Application filed December 18, 1912.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN KILDUFF, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Johnstown, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Forges and Presses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawmg.
This invention relates to a combination forge and press, and the primary object of my invention is to provide rolls that can be advantageously used for forging and pressing billets, whereby the billets can be eventually shaped into articles of commerce.
Another object of this invention is to provide an apparatus that can be economically and expeditiously used for forging and pressing metal to increase the tenacious nature of the same, without unduly rupturing, upsetting or impairing the lasting qualifications of the metal.
A further object of this invention is to provide an apparatus of the above type that has adjustable rolls that can be set to operate upon billets of various sizes.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of an apparatus in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2- is an end view of the same, Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of a roll bearing, and Fig. 4: is an enlarged perspective view of a detached adjusting wedge.
Further describing my invention in detail with reference to the accompanying draw ings, wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts throughout: 1 denotes a bed plate provided with housings 2 and 8 and arranged within the openings 4 of said housings is a stationary bearing 5, and an adjustable bearing 6 for the necks or spindles 7 of a roll 8. The roll 8 has the periphery thereof provided with a longitudinal recess 9 of compound curvature thereby providing a shoulder 10 and it is against the shoulder 10 that the end of a billet is placed that passes under the roll.
The bottom of each of the openings 4 of the housings provides a guide for adjust- Specification of Letters Patent.

able bearings 11 that have depending flanges 12 engaging the sides of the housings. The bearings 11 are provided with seats 18 and let for the necks or spindles 15 and 16 of rolls 1? and 18 respectively. The seats 13 and 14; are formed whereby the strength of said hearings will not be impaired by the formation of the seats, and in consequence of the arrangements of the seats it is neces sary that the roll 17 be of less length than the roll 18.
The rolls 17 and 18 of one set of bearings cooperate with the rolls of the other set in supporting a billet that is fed beneath the roll 8 to be forged and pressed thereby.
The bearings 11 have inclined walls 19 provided with dovetailed tongues 20 and these tongues engage in the dovetailed grooves 21 of Wedges 22 arranged within the openings 4; of the housings. The wedges 22 are connected by keys 23 to the lower ends of rods 24 that extend upwardly through the bearings 5 and 6 and the top of each housing, said rods extending through a cross head 26 arranged above each housing. Extending through the cross heads 26 are adjusting screws 25, these latter being connected to the bearings 6 whereby the bearings can be elevated or lowered in view of the fact that the screws 25 are vertically adjustable. The upper ends of the rods 24 have nuts 27 and encircling said rods between said nuts and the cross head 26 are coiled springs 28. The bed plate 1 is provided with a support 29 for a hydraulic cylinder 30 and said hydraulic cylinder is employed for longitudinally moving a head 31. The head 31 is adapted to engage one end of a billet that passes between the rolls of the apparatus and upset, compress or forge the said end when desired.
In operation, the end of a billet is placed in the recess 9 against the shoulder 10 of the roll 8, and as movement is imparted to said roll or the rolls 17 and 18 from a suitable source of energy, the roll 8 brings pressure to bear upon the billet and it is reduced in its cross sectional area, the rolling action forging and pressing the billet similar to the same action accomplished by a forging hammer.
It is apparent that by repeated passes and by turning a billet that it can be quickly recluced to a desired size.
One embodiment of my invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
and modifications as fall Within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. An apparatus of the type described comprising housings, roll bearings adjustably arranged in said housings, rolls sup ported thereby, adjustable Wedges arranged in the openings of said housings for shifting said bearings, and a roll adjustab ly and revolubly support-ed by said housings and having a longitudinal compound curved recess formed in the periphery thereof presenting a longitudinal shoulder.
2. An apparatus of the type described comprisinghousings, roll bearings adjustably arranged in said housings, rolls supported thereby, adjustable Wedges arranged in the openings of said housings for shifting said bearings, a roll adjustably and revolubly supported by said housings and having a longitudinal compound curved recess formed in the periphery thereof presenting a longitudinal shoulder, and'means adjacent to said housings for operating upon the side of a piece of material passed between said rolls.
3. In a combined forge and press, housings, adjustable bearings arrangedin the openings of said housings, sets of rolls revolubly supported by said bearings, Wedges arranged in the openings of said housings and movably connected to said bearings, means supported by said housings for adjusting said Wedges, and a revoluble and ad justable roll supported by said housings above the first mentioned rolls, said roll having a longitudinal recess formed therein presenting a shoulder.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
