Specification of Letters Patent.

' My invention relates to electric heaters, and it has special reference to such air heatersas are employed in the manufacture of candy and are commonly known as batch 5 1 1 and 2 forms no part of my inventionand heaters The object of my invention is to provide v a device of the above-indicated character which shall be simple, inexpensive and durable in construction, eilicient in operation and particularly adapted to effectively direct and concentrate the heat generated in its several heater units at a particular distance in front of the heater.
Heretofore, electric air heaters have been constructed which embodied a plurality of heater units arranged vertically side-by-side and a single heat reflector. \Vith such anarrangement, it is evident that the several heater units were affected by the heat of the adjacent units in approximately thesame degree, so that all of the units operated under substantially the same conditions and could, therefore, be designed and constructed alike.
According to my present invention, I provide an electric heater in which the several heater units are horizontally disposed and arranged one above another, each unit being provided with an individual heat reflector which projects between the adjacent units in such manner as to prevent the heat from the lower units from rising and causing the upper units to be 'operated at excessive temperatures. With this arrangement, each heater unit is operated independently and under. the same heat conditions, so that all the units may be constructed alike and are interchangeable.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure is a front elevation of'a device construct'ed'in accordance with my invention, a portion of one of the heater 'lnllIS' being removed to show the construction thereof.- Fig. 2 is.' a sectional view on a line"II-II of Fig.'1. Fig. 3 is a similar view on the'line 1II -III of Fig. 1. and Fig. 4: is a similar view on the line IVIV of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawingin detail, the
device here shown comprises a plurality of heater units 1 and 2, a plurality of supporting brackets 3,4 and 5, heat reflecting plates 6 and 7, and end plates S and 9.
The heater units 1 and 2 are of like con struction and preferably comprise resistance elements 10 which are slotted on alternate sides to provide a zig zag path for the ourrent and which are assembled between suitable insulating members 11 and 12 and in cased in a metal sheath 13.
The particular structure of heater units hence any of the well known types of heater units may be employed. These heater units 1 and 2 are horizontally disposed and arranged one above the other, being secured to the supporting brackets 3, 4- and 5 a suitable manner. The end supportingbrackets 3 and 5 are provided with supporting plates 14 having insulating bushings 15 to receive the conductor loads 16, said leads being electrically connected to the resistance elements 10 in a well known manner.
The method of connecting the several heater units pertains in no way to my in-- vention and those skilled in'theart will readily understand that they maybe con.-
nected in series, in parallel or in any other desired relation.
The reflecting plate 6 constitutes the back portion of the heater and extends upwardly and forwardly in order to reflect the heat of the upper heater unit 1 to a point at any desired distance in front thereof. The upper portion of the plate 6 is suitably secured to the supporting: brackets 3, 4t and 5 and to the end plates 8 and which form the sides of the device. Plate 7 also extends upwardly and is curved forwardlv in such manner 'as to projectbetween the heater units 1 and 2 and to prevent the heat generated by the unit 2 from materially in [testing the operation or the temperature oi the upper unit 1. The curvature of the reflector plates Grand 7 depends entirely upon the distance in front of the heater that it is d'esifedto concentrate the heat.
Bushings 17 are provided in the reflecting plates 7 to protect the conductor leads 16, and plate 7 is suitably secured to the end plates 8 and 9 in order to. form a rigid structure.
