enses.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. BAILEY, citizen of the United States, residing at Cromwell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Pistols, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates especially to that class of toy pistols in which the explosivecaps or patches of fulminate are placed on a roll of tape, so that said caps may be successively brought into position with respect to the hammer by drawing the tape over the v anvil upon which said hammer strikes when the trigger is operated.
The primary object of my present invention is to provide a toy-pistol of this general character which can be manufactured at comparatively small cost, which is easily operated to explode the caps in succession, and in which the fulminate tape may be un wound and fed quickly and conveniently by hand, thereby dispensing with the use of automatic feeding means for the purpose.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a construction of toy-pistol in which the roll of fulminate-tape may be readily placed in the pistol and the outer end thereof passed over the anvil in position to be fed by hand as the hammer is operated.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is more specifically set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a side view of a toy-pistol, constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view, a part of the near side of the pistol being broken away to show the rollchamber and feeding-passage for the tape. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the pistol, the hammer and trigger being removed. Fig. 41 is a detail view of a part of one of the sections or halves of the pistol.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In carrying out my invention the pistol is made in two longitudinal sections or halves 5 and 6, as is customary in toy pistols of this general character, said sections or halves being held together by a screw 7, and two or more rivets 8, in connection with the filling piece 9 on one half of the barrel for centering the other half of said barrel.
Specification of Letters Eatent.
Application filed June 1?, 1812.
Patented Oct. 1 1, 1913. Serial No. 704,205.
In the present instance a chamber 10 is formed directly in front of and below the anvil 11, the wall 12 in the rear of said chamber forming a guide for the fulminatetape, hereinafter referred to, being on a line with the anvil. This chamber is adapted to receive the roll of fulminate-tape 13, and the opening, as 14, leading into said chamber is at the lower end of the latter above the trigger-guard 15. As will be seen, the fulminate-tape is fed from the lower end of the chamber 10 through the opening 14, up over the outer surface of the wall 12 and over the anvil, against which latter the hammer 16 of the pistol strikes. The hammer 16 is operated by a trigger 17, through the intervention of the usual trigger mechanism (not shown).
In the present instance the vertical passage 18 through which the end of the roll of fulminate-tape passes up past the anvil is formed with one side of the same left open so that in placing a roll in the chamber the end may be drawn out and passed laterally into said passage. To provide for this construction of the piston the lower part of the feedpassage is formed by an angular off-set 19 on the part 5 of the pistol (see Fig. 4), while the upper part of said passage or anvil is formed conjointly by the sections or halves 5 and 6, a lip 20 on the part 5 being opposite a recess 21 in the part or section 6, as shown in Fig. 3. The lip 20 is at the open side of the upper end of the feedpassage to hold the fulminate'tape in proper place upon the anvil, and it will be noted that said lip is a slight distance above the upper end of the rear wall of the passage, see Fig. 1, so that the end portion of the tape may be passed around said lip to the anvil.
It will be understood by reference to the drawing, particularly Fig. 2, that the roll of fulminate-tape is supported loosely in the chamber 10, and may be fed to bring the capssuccessively over the anvil by drawing upon the projecting end, above the anvil, or feeding it up from below the feed-passage 18, in which latter instance that part of the tape just beyond the roll is gripped at its edges by the thumb and finger, the tape being wide enough to afford a good hold.
In placing a roll of fulminate-tape in the pistol it is only necessary to compress the roll so that it may pass through the opening 14:, and as the tape is used from the roll the latter will expand, or unroll, so that it will not pass out through the opening but remain in the chamber until it is nearly all used. I
From the foregoing it will be seen that I provide a very cheao toy-pistol for exploding caps on fulminate tape, and that a simple and convenient means is provided for holding the roll in the pistol and for feeding the tape over theanvil.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A toy-pistol havin an anvil against which the hammer strikes, a chamber in the pistol in front of and below the anvil, an opening leading from the chamber out at the lower part of the pistol above the triggerguard, a passage leading from the lower part of the pistol to the anvil and open at one side, and a retaining-lip at the upper end of the open side of the passage; together with a hammer for exploding the caps against the anvil.
2. A toy-pistol made in two sections to provide an anvil and a chamber in front of and below said anvil, with an opening for the chamber at the lower part of the pistol, one of the sections having an offset portion forming a feed-passage below the anvil, said feed-passage being open at one side, a lip above the open side of the feed-passage, and a hammer for exploding the caps against the anvil, substantiallv as shown and described.
In testimony whereof Iaifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES A. BAILEY.
