My invention relates to' means by which the-gag. of whatever construction it may be and wherever itmay be situated, is moved into its respective positions, and comprises as to 'oneof its broader aspects, apair of motors, one-of which when put inaction isaclapted to-move-the gag into eflective or op erat-ive position while'the'ot-her motor when put into action shifts-said gaginto inopera tiveposition. The motors in question may be of any suitable type although I prefer that they be fluid-operable, for instance and as wiil' be'hereinaf-ter described, electricallyactuated. One of these motors is'manually controlled while the otheris' automatically governed" and while this statement applies to either motor, I prefer that the one which moves the gag-i t'o' operative position be manually-controlled and that the other he auto maticaily controlled. As motors which meet all the conditions, I might cite solenoids as I. have iilustrated and will hereinafter describe.

For atlmnicing the gag 5' or moving the same tea-effective position, I have shownthe solenoid 6, the solenoid 7- hereinafter more particularly described, presenting? a convertient means for retracting said gagv or shiftof movement ot the unchor tool 4-, said gag supplying the necessary current to the two solenoids for energizing the same, the two line wires 11 and 12 being shown for such purpose and connected with a main (not shown). From the line wire 11 the conductor 13 extends being connected to one pole of the solenoid 6 while the wire 14 leads from the other pole of said solenoid 6 to the conductor 12, being intersected by the switch or push-button 15.. The said solenoid therefore has a local circuit of its own, said circuit being shown as open in Fig. 1 at which time the gag 5 and core member 10 are in their retracted positions where they were moved by the energization of the solenoid 7. It will be assumedthat the head 2 is being reciprocated and that it is desired that the tool 4; should punch through the stock. I To secure this the local circuit just described is closed by the manipulation of the push button or switch 15 thereby energizing the solenoid 6 and causing the same to attract or draw in its core 8 and consequently moving the core member 10 and gag 5 to the left in said Fig. 1 and said gag into its operative position or in solid engagement with the upper end of the punch 4.
As already stated the gag is automatically moved to inoperative position but as I have also already observed this may not be so in all cases. The solenoid 7 also has its local circuit and I refer that this particular'circuit be contro led at two points tothus prevent sparking. One of the breaks in the second circuit may be closed for instance by means connected with the reciprocatory head 2 while the other, for example, may be closed by means connected with the gag 5, the latter being of advantage in that said circuit is closed only when the gag is in operative relation. v
As shown the wire 16 connectsthe conductor 11 with one pole of the solenoid 7, while the wire 17 connects the other terminal of said-solenoid 7 with the conductor 12, said wire 17 being intersected by two gaps. or breaks provided with terminals 18 and 19 respectively. It will be clear therefore that when the two sets of terminals or contacts 18 and 19 are simultaneously bridged the solenoid 7. will be energized to shift the gag into inoperative position, through the attraction of the core 9 and the drawing back of the core member 10.
One. of the circuit closers for governing the circuit of the gag retracting solenoid 7 is preferably connected with the reciprocatory head 2 while the other-is preferably connected with the core-member 10 and the same may vary radically although those shown and now to be described answer my purposes. Upon the upper end of said head 2 is a horn-like arm 20 to which is connected the circuit closing member 21 insulated from said arm in some suitable Way as by the insulation 22. Fitting around the squared portion 23 of the core member 10 is the insulatingblock 2 1 to opposite sides of which are connected the bowed-spring contact-fingers 25 connected together by bolts or pins 26, and which are adapted respectively to engage the contacts or posts 19 when the gag 5 is in its advanced or operative position. y
It will be assumed that the gag is in its inoperative position as shown in Fig. 1 and that the head 2 is in motion and that it isv above the, extreme of its low movement. To put the gag into operative position, the switch 15 will be thrown to close the circuit of the solenoid 6 as already set forth so that said solenoid will attract its core 8 and therefore shift said gag 5 into operative position. As the gag assumes its operative position, the contact fingers 25 engage the terminals or posts 19- thereby closing the circuit of the solenoid 7 at one break thereof whereby when the head 2 descends to the limit of its downward movement, said circuit can be closed by the circuit closer 21 bridging the contacts 18 at which point the said solenoid 7 will be energized-to attract its core 9 and thereby draw back the gag 5 into in i operative position.
What I claim is: I
1. The combination with the gag of a punch-press, of a motor for moving'said gag into operative relation, a second motor for moving said gag into inoperative position, manually-operable means for rendering one of said motors effective, and automatic means for rendering the other motor ef fective.
2. The combination with the gag of a punch-press, of a motor for moving said gag into operative position, a second motor for moving said gag into "inoperative position, manually-operable means for rendering the first mentioned motor eifective and automatic means for rendering the second motor effective.
3. The combination' with the gag of a punch-press, of an electricmotor for movin said gag into operative position, a secon electric motor for moving said =gag into inoperative position, manually-operable means for effecting the energization of one of said motors, and automatic means for efiecting the energization of the other of-said motors.
4%. The combination with the gag of a punch-press, a plurality of solenoids coop- I punch-press, a plurality of solenoi l0- imam erative with said gag, manually-operable means for eflecting the energization of one of said solenoids to move the gag in one direction, and automatically operative means for .efiecting the energizat-ion of the other solenoid .to move said gag in the opposite direction.
5. The combination with the a core member connected with said go the cores of said solenoids being mount upon said core member, and means for efiecting themor 'zation of said solenoids in predetermined 0 er.
6. The combination with the neciprocatory head and with the gag of a punch-press, of a motor for moving said gag into operative position, a second motor for moving said g into ino erative position, manually-opera le means or putting one of said motors into action, and means coiiperative with said;
head, for putting the other motor into action.
7. The combination with the gag of a punch-press, of a motor for moving said gag into operative position, a second motor for moving said gag into inoperative position, and means fen rendering the two motors cfof a' fective predetermined order one of said means'being automatically-operative.
8. The combination with the gag of a, unch-press, an electricallyrated device orshifting the gag in one direction a second electrically-operated device for shifting said g in the o posite direction, manuallyo ra' le means fiir closing the circuit of one 0 said electrically-o erated devices, and automatic means for c osing the circuit of the other electrically operated device at two points.
9. The combination with the reciprocatory head and with the gag of a punch-press, of an electric motor for moving said gag into operative position, manually-operab e means for closing the circuit of said motor, a second motor for moving said gag into inoperative position, and automatic means connected with said head and with d gag for cl the circuit of the second motor at two points.
