- My invention relates to improvements in along a graduated segment.
typewriting machines for printing notes, and more particularly to typewritin Inachincs in which the platen is adapts to be rotated according to the line or space of the staiif. to be printed upon by means of a toothed gearing which is adapted to be con pled with the platen so. as to transmit rotary movement thereto but does not take part in its longitudinal or letter spacing movement, and the object of the improvements is to provide a machine of this class in which the gear wheel may be disconnected .from the platen, so that when printing ordinary characters the gear wheel is not carried along by the rotation of the platen.
With this object in viejw my invention consists in providing a coupling member between the toothed gear wheel and the platen.
"When the said platen is connected with the toothed gear wheel, and the latter is rotated, such rotation is imparted to the platen in any position of the latter. If it is desired to print ordinary characters With the typewrlting machine, the platen and gear wheel are disconnected from each other, so that the platen can be rotated independentlyoi' the gear wheel.
A further feature of my invention relates to the mechanism for rotating the gear wheel which is adapted to be connectedwith the platen for printing notes. This mechanism consists of a rock shaft having a toothed sectorand a lever keyed thereto. The sector is in engagement with the gear wheel, and the lever is adapted to be rocked The whole mechanism is mounted on a slide which is adapted to be shifted toward and away from the gear wheel, so that the latter can be thrown-out of engagement with the toothed sector. 4
For the purpose of explaining the invention an example embodying the same has 1 roviding guide ways for a notched crossbeen shown in the accompanying drawings in which the same letters of reference have been used in all the views to indicate ccrresponding parts.

Referring to the example illustrated in the drawings, on the base plate 1 of the typewriting machine. a platen 6 is mounted 76 in suitable bearings so as to be longitudinally shiftable thereon for letter s acing. The platen is adapted to be rotated or line spacing by an known or preferred means I not shown. t one end of the latch a toothed ear wheel 3 is'mountecl in rackets 2. and t e shaft 3 of the gear Wheel is adapted to be coupled to a shaft 5 by a clutch which in the example illustrated consists of a set screw 4. The shaft 5 extends into the hollow of the platen 6 which as; shown consists of a steel cylinder and a lining of rubber. The steel cylinder is formed with a pair of longitudinal ribs 7 plece 8 secured to theend of the shaft, 5. When the toot-lied gear wheel 3 and the shaft 5 are coupled with each other by means of the set screw 4 rotation of the Wheel 3 is transmitted tothe platen. When printing ordinary characters, the set screw is loosened," so that the wheel 3 does not take part in the rotation of the platen imparted thereto by the usual line spacing mechanism.
The gear wheel 3 is adapted to be rotated by means of a toothed sector 9 which is secured to a shaft 10 rotatably mounted in brackets 10 of a slide plate 11. The latter is adapted to be shifted toward and away from the platen. and with the sector 9 into 0 or out of engagement with the gear Wheel 3. In theeXample-illustrabed in the drawn. ings such movement is imparted. to the slide plate 11 by'means of a rocking, lever 19 having a slottedtransverse arm 12 engaging .a pin 13 secured to the slide plate. Thearm 12 is arranged at an. angle' to the lever 19, so that when rocking thej' lever sidewise the slide plate 11 .is shifted toward or away from the platen. At the end oppositeito so i the sector 9 the shaft 10 carries a lever 14 formed with a hand piece 15 adapted to be shifted along a circular scale 16. As shown in Fig. 1, the said scale shows the lines and spaces and the added lines and spaces of the stafi. The lever leis equipped with a laterally projecting thumb 'nut 17 by means of which it can readily be shifted. To lock the lever in set position a toothed sector 18 is provided which is adapted to be engaged by a spring actuated edge provided on the lever 1.4. When rocking the lever 14 the said edge is automatically lifted out of engagement with the toothed sector, which may be done for example by rotating the thumb nut 17.
The mechanism for rotating the platen, and the type keys and their operating mechanism may have any known or preferred construction. Such means are known in the art and need no detailed description.
/Vhile in describing the invention reference has been made to a particular example embodying the same, Iwish it to be understood that my invention is not limited to the construction shown in the drawings, and that various changes may be made in the general arrangement and construction of the parts.
I claim herein as my invention:
1. In a typewriting machine for printing notes, the combination with the platen, of a shaft permitting longitudinal. movement of the platen and adapted totransmit rotary movement thereto, a toothed gear wheel, a clutch mechanism intermediate said shaft and gear wheel, means to rotate said toothed gear wheel, and a slide carrying said rotating means and adapted to shift the same into or out of engagement with said gear wheel.
2. In a typewriting machine for printing notes, the combination with the platen, of
a shaft directly connected with said platen and adapted to permit longitudinal move ment thereof and to transmit rotary movement thereto, a toothed gear wheel, mechanism adapted to rotate said gear wheel for setting the platen in positions for printing on different lines and spaces of the staff, and a, slide carrying said rotating means and adapted to shiftthe same into or out of engagement with said gear wheel.
3. In a typewriting machine for printing notes, the combination with the platen, of a shaft permitting longitudinal movement of the platen and adapted to transmit rotary movement thereto, a toothed gear wheel, a toothed sector engaging said gear wheel, means to rock said sector, anda slide carrythe sector and rocking means and adaptto throw the sector into or out of engagement with the gear wheel.
a. In a typewriting machine for printing notes, the combination with the platen, of a shaft permitting longitudinal movement of the platen and adapted to transmit rotary movement thereto, a toothed gear wheel, a toothed sector; engaging said gear wheel, a rock shaft carrying said sector, a lever fixed to said rock shaft for rocking the same, a
curved member adjacent said rocking lever and having a scale indicating the lines and spaces of-the shaft, and means for holding said leverin the position to which it is moved.
