GARTER.
To all whom it may camccm .9.
Be it known that I, Fmssnr G. BIKE a citizen of the United States, residing at particularly tothat type formed of a circular band adapted to encircle the leg, the object of the invention being to provide improved means by which the diameter of the garter may be regulated as desired.
1 The invention aims to furnish a garter in which the adjustment can be readily efiected merely by moving a .slide, with which the band is provided, either toward 'or away from a plate so that the diameter 'of the garter may be. increased ordecreased, as the case may be.
A further object of the invention is to utilize, for this purpose, a slide and a plate fromeach of which depends one endof the band, each end carrying -one of the clasp members by which the stocking is supported, the latter thus being sustained in an effective manner at two substantially diametrically opposite points, the clasp members being adjustable on thedepending ends'to adapt the garter for use with a long or short stocking.
With-these ends in view, the invention 1 consists in a garter constructed in the manner to be hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanyingdrawing, in which the same reference characters denote the same parts throughout the. views; Figure 1 is a perspective view of the entire garter,-
Figs. 2 and 3 are front elevations of the' slide and plate respectively; Fig, {l is a per spective view of the clasp consti'hction by which the stocking is supported Fig. 5 is a profile view of-Fig. 4; Fig 6. isa profile view of Fig. 7 showing theand on which the slide moves; Fig. 7 shows the slidahle portion of the band passing -thr0ugh.the vertical slits of the slide shown in Fig. 2, with the end portion laced rigidly to the slide and droppingat right angles to the leg encircling band to sustain the. stocking engaging clasp members; ,Fig. 8' shows an end portion of the band laced rigidly to the plate shown in Fig. 3; Fig. 9 shows the hook by which the garter can be disconnected when desired.
The garter consists of a one-piece band, looped to encircle the leg, with a plate on the band and a slide movable toward and away from the plate to vary the diameter of the band. The end portions of the band are laced t1... ough the slits in both the plate and the slide, depend from the latter, and are provided with adjustable stocking-support ing devices.
The improved garter comprises a band which may be of any preferred material,
u h preferably non-elastic. Said band is formed into a loop and adjustable means of a slide, 2, shown in detail in Fig. 2. The slide 2 is provided at opposite sides with vertical slits 2, 3-, and has a central oblique slit 6, and a lower horizontal slit 8. The plate 3 shownin Fig. 3, has vertical slits l, 5, and a horizontal slit 9 corresponding to the slits 2,3 and 8 of the slide 2, but the slit 7 of the slide 3, though it is directed obliquely like the slit 6, is inclined in the opposite direction. The plate and slide are both curved slightly in order to conform to the curvature of the leg.- Figs. 2 and 3 illustrate the outer faces of these members.
Then the garteris made up one end por-, tion 1 1 of the band or web 1, Fig. 8, is passed backwardly through the horizontal slit. 9, up
I through 7, over the top, downward-through 7'. again. backward through 4, and out.
through 5, leaving the end portion 15 securely fastened by the knot thus formed in the plate and hanging down in a position to support the clasp member 10, Fig. 1, suspended from the portion 15 by a collar 11. The button 12,-also carried by the portion 15, codperates with the clasp member 10 in the well known manner. The end portion 14 is continued from plate 3' to slide 2, passing through the'vertical slits 2 and Sin the rear of slide 2', and through a hook 13, Fig. 9, from the rear, returning to slide 2, backward and upward through slit 6, over the top of slide 2' and down through slit 6 again and out through slit 8, at right angles to the leg encircling band, the end portion 16 being providedwith a clasp similar to that The members 2 and 3,
ally spaced apart at some distance, so that a support for the stocking at two separate points is provided, and in this way the stocking is effectively held in position. When it is desired to put on the garter, the same is opened up by bringing the slide 2 toward the plate 3, which. may be effected simply by pulling on'thc intermediate portion of the web or band 1, or by disconnecting the hook 13 from the slit 4. The opening and closing movement of the garter through the action of the slide 2 is caused by the fact that the band is freely slidable through said slide, though connected rigidly at a point farther on, this slide being used for the double purpose of enlarging or reducing the diameter of the garter, and carrying the depending portion 16, to which the support for the stocking is secured.
While the band is freely slidable through slide 2, the depending stocking supporting portion in passing through the slits provided for it, is securelyheld in fixed relation with the said slide. In thismanner, although the looped portion of the garter is increased or decreased in diameter as required, the depending stocking supporting portions retain at all times the same relation with respect to the slides from which they are suspended. It will also be noted that the slide and plate perform the very important double function of adjusting the garter to the proper diameter and of sustaining and in this manner a very reliable and simple device of co paratively few parts is provided. 7
Clasp member 1, Fig. 4, is slidable on the stocking supporting end portions of the band by means of theloose fitting collar 11, which can be raised or lowered as may be desired, and the button member 12 is like. wise movable, so that both the button and clasp can be adjusted to suit requirements.
What I claim is 1. In a garter, a one-piece band adapted to completely encircle the leg, a plate and a and the dependlng'garter ends hanging therefrom, are usuable thereon toward the stocking-supporting portions;-
and
formed into an ad ustable loop adapted to completely encircle plate at one end and a fastening device at the other end coacting withslide on the band freely movable thereon toward and away from said plate to vary the diameter of the loop, and a stocking sustaining device supported from said slide,
3. A garter comprising a one-piece band adapted to completely encircle the leg, said band being formed into an adjustable loop the leg and having asaid plate, a-
piece band I and having a plate at one end of the loop- A and a fastening device at the other end to coact with the plate, the band being continued integrally downward through said late and suspending device, and a slide on and away from said plate to vary the diameter of the loop, the band being extended integrally downward through said slide and suspending a second stocking supporting device.
l. In a garter, the combination, of a one-4 piece band adapted to completely encircle the leg, a plate and an adjustable slide on said band, one end of said band being integrally laced to the plate and through to form a stocking supporting member, said band passing at its-intermediate portion through the slide and then folded back upon itself to form a ,loop, the second extremity said slide and extended therethrough to form a second stocking supporting member,
plate.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
