CHIMNEY-OAP.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettere Patent and making part of the same.
ncy-cap that willr be rotated either hy the5 ascending current ot` air fromthe chimney, or by currents ot' air acting in any direction upon said cap from outside the chimney or tine, to increase the draught ot' the chimney, and prevent any current 'oi' air descending into vided with a cone, to set around the lower part ot' the Lone of the cap, and protect the said spindle from sont, &c.
ln the drawing,.-`
Figure 'l is a. plan oi" our improved ehimncy-c.ip;
Figure 2 is an elevation; and
Figureii is a vertical section oi' the saine,V
n represents a short metal cylinder placed upon or iin-ming the top ot' the chimney or tlne. lWithin this cylinder the vertical spindle I; is attached by a cross-piece, and receives the cone c, said .cone e beinggr i'ornied with the bearing l at the upper part, and with the cylindrical part 0 at the lower portion, said cylindrical portion forming a guide to stead y the cone in its rota-tion upon the spindle.
.lhc wings h are placed upon the conc e at suitable distances apart.- We prefer to attach the lower parts ot the wings to the cone on the line of a radial plane to the cone, and curve the upper portion of each wingdownto nearly a horizontal position near the inverted hase ot' the conc. This allows the-lateral currents of air to act upon the parts of the wings below the points i, while the ascending currents of air,- either i'roni inside the chimney or from the outside, will act upon the wings near the upper part or inverted base ot' the cone, and give rotation to the capf,
A. conc, l, is provided upon the spindle b, and sets around the lower part of vthe cone e, and prevents soot accumulating around the spindle, as the smokeis detlccted by said conc, and passes out around the cone and wings 71.
cross-bar between the wings`0r deiiectorsand the'hole through which the pivot passes. This is liable to become bent or obstructed by soot and the revolution of the cap interfered' with.
The cone used in oui" cap lenders this cross-piece nnneeessary,'aml, at the same time, surrounds and protects the pivot from becoming obstructed.
The cap or top t of thc cone should be ot' a domeshape, to shed water, and this cap may be put upon the cone after the wings have been riveted in place.
lVc claim as our invention- 1. The inverted cone surrounding vthe pivot or spindle, andsustaining` the wings or detleetors that are above the line or chimney, substantially as setfort-h.
2. A revolving chimney-cali, made of an inverted cone, with curved wings attached to the surface, sub'- stantially as and for the purposes specified.
Signed this 31st day of May, A. 1870.
