IMPROYEMENT IN YPISTON-Ill"ACKING.
The Schedule referredto in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
I, FRANKLIN MGGOXNELL, ofA Dowagiac, in the county' of Cass and State ot' Michigan, have invented certain Improvements in Piston-Packing, of which the following is a specification.
The tirst part ot' my invention relates to the manner of constructing and adjusting pistou-packing" and -is designed to be used principally in steanl-engine pistons, but may be used in other pistons, the object heilig to enable the attendant or engineer' to tighten or adjust the packing-ringsor other packings with great accuracy, avoiding the necessity ot' opening the piston-head or the cylinder in which itworks.
The second part of my invention relates tothe conibination, with my device for an adjustable pistonpacking, ot' a device for answering the two-told purpose ot' indicating ythe leak of the piston-head, and ot' at'- .brding means by which the piston-head and interior of the cylinder may be lubricated.
In the accompanying.drawing- Figure l is a vert-ical longitudinal section through the diameter ot a machine embodying myinvention,
Figure 2 is an enlargedend view ofthe pistonhead, with the outer plate ofthe head removed, show-- ing the arrangement ot' the packing and adjusting devices.
Io enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A is a cylinder', which may be. constructed in the usual form.
B is' the piston-rod. This rod is made hollow Aand iirmly attached to the inner plate ot the piston-head.
G is a rod tting loosely in the hollow piston-rod, and extending its entire length, having the coneshaped head at one cud, as seen at D, and is provided'at thel other end with the screw-nut E. rlhis nut works in a slot in the crosshead at the end ofthe hollow piston-rod. The manner of attachingthe piston-rod to the cross-head is not fully shown, as any goed machinist will readily see how -it may be done. y IIhe cone I) on thc rod G projects into the space between the plates a a. rlhese platesforni the body ofthe piston-head, and are made very much in the usual form, and provided with tfwo or. more open wings, d d. These wings are iitted one within the other, with their open sides opposite, andare nicely litted between the plates au in the usual manner.
F F are segmental braces, any number ot' which maybe used that are required for the v, rioussizes ot'- braces are fitted at their' toes to the cone D, and at their outer extremities to the inner side ot' the inner packing-ring, and have elongated openings through or betweeinthem, as seenat G, to receive the studs H, by which lthe plates c. a are attached to cac-h other through the agency of the bolts I.
A countersink is made in the end ot the hollow piston-rod, which allows the cone D to be'drawn partiallyinto the hollow' piston. kNow it will be seen that the line between the toes of the segmental braces and eone D, forms an inclined plain to the axis of the pislton, and, as the nut E is turned onto the rod C, the cone D will be drawn inward, forcing the braces F up said inclined plane, and out against the rings :l al, thus enlarging the rings equally in all direc-tions from the pist-ons. Ihese center ot' the cone D, and atfordingan accurate and easy method ot adjusting the piston-packing, when necessary. y
It will also be seen thatii' the packingfrings become loose, steam will pass between them to the hollow piston-rcd, and out through the opening at vInfthus indicating to the attendant that the packing requires to be tightened. Y l' y At the opening at L, oil maybe introduced through the hol-low piston to the interior of thel piston-head, and by backing up the nut E, the rings l d will become loose and allow oil to pass to the inner surface ot' the cylinder A.
I claim my invention- 1. The hollow piston-rod B, having the rod C, with I the openingL, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
" FRANKLIN lMCGONIW'ILL.
