Description

hurrah s rerns earner Fries.
CLARKE. SULLIVAN, or EVANSVILLE, manna.
SAFETY? Reese-emeritus "Device.
T 0 all w/wm it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARK E. SULLIVAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evansville, in the county ofVanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Horse'- Hitching Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in safety horse-hitching devices and comprises a simple and eflicient device adapted to be actuated by the rotation of the wheel of a vehicle to which the animal is hitched, suitable connection being made with the bit serving to check or stop the animal.
The invention comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail in elevation of the hub detaching device and ratchet member mounted thereon. Fig. 3 is a sectional View on line 33 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4l4 of Fig. 2.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a ring or band, made preferably of metal, and provided with circumferential flanges B and B about the circumference thereof, and intermediate said flanges are the ratchet teeth D arranged at intervals to one another and set screws E are passed through threaded apertures in the band and adapted to frictionally engage the hub F of a vehicle wheel. A ratchet ring, designated by letter H, is pro- Specification of Letters i atent.

vided with a Series of internal teeth K which are adapted to engage the ratchet teeth D upon which said ring rests when adapted for use, being held upon the band by means of said flanges. Said ratchet ring is provided with two arms, designated respectively by letters I and J the latter ofwhich is apertured as at J and the former serving as a handle. A rope designated by letter T is fastened to the eye J and passes through a ring upon the back part of the saddle of the harness and its forked ends are provided j with flanged hooks for attachment to thebit rings of the bridle.
It will be noted upon reference to the drawings that the ring having internal ratchet teeth has an opening of suiiicient diameter to allow said ring to be placed over the ratchet band and readily removed there from, it being the purpose of my invention to normally separate the ratchet ring from the band when not in use, the handle serving as a convenient means for applying the;
ring when it is desired to hitch the horse.
In operation, the ratchet ring is placed over the band and rests upon the circumference of the band which is fastened to the hub, the cord which is secured to the eyev J being fastened to the bridle bit as shown. In the event of the horse starting to draw the vehicle, a ratchet tooth of the band will engage a ratchet tooth upon the inner circumference of the ring and cause the latter to turn with the band, thus drawing the rope taut and pulling back upon the bit which will have a tendency to stop the horse and the carriage to which it is attached. When the wheel is at rest, the pulling effect upon the rope will be discontinued.
What I claim to be new is A' safety horse hitching device comprising a circular band with flanges about the edges thereof, the circumference of the band ta pering slightly and provided with teeth intermediate said flanges, a ratchet ring of larger diameter than said flanged band and provided with a series of internal ratchet teeth for engagement with the teeth upon the band and held upon the band by the W. F. SWEET.
