Reference will first be made to the construction disclosed in Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive. 1 is the ribbon driving shaft carrying a loose pinion 2 meshing with a driving gear 3 of the spring barrel. The pinion 2 is connected with the shaft through a ratchet 4 formed on the hub integral with the wheel and engaged by a spring pressed pawl 5 contained in a cup or housing attached to the end of the shaft. By this means, the ribbon is driven during the forward movement of the carriage but the shaft 1 remains at rest during the return movement. 7 is the casing or barrel of a spring drum at one side of which is secured the driving gear 3. The spring barrel shaft is composed of two members 8 and 9. The part 8 is of two diameters and at that end of larger diame terthere is secured a worm gear 10; The part 8 of reduced diameter has adjacent the shoulder formed by the part-of the larger diameter a cross pin 8". the composite shaft are shown in Figs. 9, 10 and 11. They are the same as shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5 except that the part 8 is reduced in length as also is the part 9. There is the same cross pin 8 adapted to engage a slot 9. In addition to the slot 9 in. the part 9 there is also at right angles to the slot a tapped aperture 9 to receive a screw bolt 21 Fi 7 passing through a collar 22. In Fig. 7, there is a stud shaft carrying at one end a bevel gear 23 adapted to intermesh with a gear through which the rib on mechanism is actuated and on the oppos .e end of the shaft there is a ratchet wheelQet driven by a spring pressed pawl 25 rocking about a pin in the side face of the spring barrel. The adjustment is effected by worm and gear devices in the manner already described. Figs. 711 14 show the devices as adapted to a machine dilfering somewhat in general construction from that to which the devices ofFigs. ,1 to 6 inclusive are adapted. I I
Figs. 12, 13 and l t-show a modification. Instead of employing the reduced circular portion 8 of the composite shaft that part of it marked 8 (Fig. 12) is square in cross section and the bore of the sleeve 9 is corre- 110 spondingly shaped. Otherwisethe construction is in all respects the same as that indicated in Figs. 9, l0 and 11.
I claim;
1. Spring barrel mechanism for a writing machine, comprisin a two-part shaft, one part in the form 0 a sleeve centrally enlarged circumferentially and having on said enlargement a means for at-' tachment of the inner end of the spring and having a transverse notch in onereduced end, and an aperture in the other; and the other part a rod fitting within the sleeve and having a transverse projection fitting in said notch in the end of the sleeve; a collar on Ithe other end of thesleeve and a screw passing through said collar and the aperture in one end of the sleeve.
2. Spring barrel mechanism for a typewriting machine comprising a two-part shaft, one part in the form of a sleeve centypetrally enlarged circumferentially and hav-' ing on said enlargement a means for-attachment of the inner end of the spring and also having an aperture; and the other part a rod fitting within the sleeve, the sleeve and rod respectively being formed with interlocking means that unite them for rotation, a collar on the sleeve and a screw passing through the collar and into the aperture in the sleeve.
3. Spring barrel mechanism for a typewriting machine, 'comfprising a two part shaft, one part in the orm of a sleeve cen trally enlarged circumferentially and having on said enlargement a means for attachment of the inner end of the spring, the reduced end portions of the sleeve serving as a support for the spring barrel and upon which 1t may rotate, the other part a rod fitting within the sleeve and connected thereto to turn therewith.
4. Spring barrel mechanism for a typewriting machine, comprising a two part shaft, one part in the form of a sleeve centrally enlarged circumferentially and having on said enlargement a means for attachment of the inner end of the spring, the reduced end portions of the sleeve serving as a support or the spring barrel'and upon which it may rotate, the other part a rod fitting within the sleeve and connected thereto to turn therewith, the rod terminating in one end in a locked'rod and sleeve independently of rotation of the spring barrel.
