course, being cut away beneath said plate to t Secured on said pivot plate near the middle and lower edge thereof, is a locking pin 11, on which is secured a roller 12, which tracks in said groove A, as shown in Figs. 6 to 9, and Fig 13, and serves as a lock for the seat in either of its adjusted positions by engaging beneath the lower end of the rib 4, when the pivot pin and roller are at either end of said slot, and, during the passage of the pivot pin and roller from ene to the other end of said slot, acts to ride upwardly in the groove B, and thence downwardly in the groove C, during the inversion of the seat. As shown also, the cani plate is provided at its forward end with an outwardly struck integral hook or detent 13, adapted to receive therein the edge of the pivot plate, as shown in Fig. 7, and said edge is curved upwardly and forwardly to near the extremity to slide thereover during the return of the seat to normal position, and a relatively short straight shoulder 14, is provided at the end of sald pivot plate to rest in said detent, as shown in Fig. 6, to afford an additional lock for the seat at normal position.
The mattress frame comprising tive articulated sections, is foldable upon said seat when inverted, and at all times, when folded, is supported wholly thereon. Said mattress frame comprises alternate long and short sections, as shown in Fig. 5, and indicated by 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20, and is constructed of angle bars, the ends of the angle bar sections being pivotally engaged together through the webs, while the flanges thereof are arranged to abut, as shown in Fig. 1, so that when the mattress frame is extended, the abutting ends of said sections hold the fraine as a whole in a common plane.
As shown, the seat frame is provided on its under side, at each rear corner, with a downwardly extending bracket 15, which, when the seat is inverted, as shown in Figs. 3 to 5 inclusive, projects upwardly and outwardly. yRigidly secured by riveting or other suitable means on the under side of the mattress frame sections 17 are downwardly projecting lugs 21, which may be of any desired length, and which are pivotally en gaged on the extremities of said brackets 15, b means of a bolt or pivot pin 22, extending through both, so that, when fully ex tended, said mattress frame section 17, is elevated a desired extent above the upper end of said biacket.
Iligidly secured at approximately the eenter of the end of the seat frame and projecting downwardly therefrom, is a grooved guide plate 23, which projects below the seat frame a suitable dlstance andis provided from a point adjacent the seat frame to the rear end thereof, with a downwardly andf forwardly inclining slot D, which, at. its
lower extremity, is turned horizontally affording a locking offset in the slot. Secured at each end of the mattress frame section 16, is a pin and roller 24, shown in Figs. 1 and 5, and in dotted lines in Fig. 3, said inclined slotI in said guide plate and the position of said guide pin and roller on said mattress frame section 16, being such that when the frame is extended,',the turning of the short section 17, to a horizontal position acts to swing the long section 16, upwardly simultaneously thereby moving said pin and `roller along the slot and into the short horizontal extension thereof at the extremity of the guide plate to afford a lock.
As shown, a downwardly curved bar or pipe, 25, engages at its ends the lug 21, before described, and extends therethrough to afford the pivot inthe bracket 15. The second long section 18, is articulated as before described, at its inner end with the outer end of the short section 17, and in a similar manner the outer long section 20, is articulated with the intermediate long section 18, by means of the short section 19, which art-iculates with both and the said members of which are connected transversely by means of the downwardly curved bar or pipe 26. A foot rail 27, is pivotally supported at the extremity of the outer section, as shown in Fig. 5, to hold the bedding from sliding over the foot of the bed.
Pivotally engaged at one end with the short frame section 17, is a link 28, which'- pivotally engages the upper, shorter end of a lever 29, pivoted on the outer end of the intermediate long frame section, and in a similar manner a link 30, pivotally engages the second short section 19, and vengages the short upwardly extended end of a lever 31, fulcrumed near the outer end of the outer frame section. The relative lengths oflsaid links and the extended ends of said levers, are such that when the bed is opened out- Ward1y,`as shown in Fig. 5, said levers 29 afford sup orting legs' for said sections, but when the bed is folded inwardly from the end by substantially rolling theI mattress frame inwardly progressively, said legs fold in closed relation, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Means are provided for positively locking the Inattress frame in folded relation on the seat. 4. In a device of the class described the davenport frame, the rotatable seat therein,l a bracket at each rear corner of saidaseat projecting downwardly and rearwardly therefrom, a mattress fra-me comprising articulated alternate long' and `short mat-- tress frame sections, a foot railw'movably mount-ed on the end sections thereof to retain the mattress thereon, a downwardly projectin'lf lug secured on the first short frame section at each end thereof and pivotally engaged on the extremity of saidf brackets, a guide plate having a forwardly and downwardly inclined slot therein communicating with the horizontal slot at the lower end of the same, said guide plates secured centrally at each end the seat frame, and a roller journaled centrally on each end member of the first mattress frame section and projecting into said inclined slot whereby as the mattress frame is extended outwardly or unfolded, the thrust ofthe first long section acts. to force the same upwardly `into a common plane with the mattress frame as a whole.
5. In a device of the class described the davenportframe, the rotatable seat mounted therein, means permitting rotation thereof, lockingmegnsphplding said seat in its adjusted positioni'both at normal and when inverted, a mattress frame comprising 4a plurality of long and short articulated frame long section standards on the rear edge of the seat fragncfprojecting lugs on the under side the ends of the-first short section, a journalon said standards, inwardly hooked spring-detents secured one at each end of the seat frame, anda latch hingedly connected with the second long frame section at each end thereof and adapted for engage` .ment with 'said detentr when closed, together with said standards, to wholly support the folded mattress frame on the seat.
6. In a device of the class described a mattress frame comprising alternate long and'short articulated sections, adapted to be folded o r rolled .upwardly and inwardly tress, a foot rail section pivoted on theouter section of the mattress frame to fold over the'mattress to`retain the same as said sections are folded, brackets rigidly secured on the seat with which the second section ofthe mattress frame is connected, means elevating the mattress frame well above said bracket embracing a projection on said sect-ions affording the connection between the standard and the same, detents, one at veach end of the seat frame comprising inwardly directed hooks, and projections or latches hingcdly engaged on the outer mattress frame section 'when'folded, and' adapted to engage said detents and together with said standards to support the mattress frame on the seat.
