ject of the Czar of Russia, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Man! hattan, in the county. and State of New York, have ii'ivented a new and lmproved Safety-Razor, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. i
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: to provide means for adjusting blades with reference to the work to be performed; to provide a construct-ion adapted for packing within small compass, and to provide a construction such as described, arranged to facilitate the necessary cleaning of the tool.
One embodiment of the present invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a razor constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged view showing in sectional elevation an end fragment. of a razor constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 3 is an end view of a blade holder, on an enlarged scale, shown in conjunction with an end fragment of the handle; Fig. 4 is a similai-view, showing the blade as partly relaxed to partially uncover the cutting edge of the same; Fig. 5 is a det-ail view, showing the guard plate forming part of the present invention; Fig. 6 is a detail view showing the bed plate with which the present, razor is provided; Fig. 7 is a sectional view taken on the line 7-7 .in Fig. 2, and showing in conjunction therewith and in dotted lines, the out-of-service position of the tightening cross head.
As seen in the accompanying drawings, the immediate holder for the blade 12 coniprises a guard plate 13, a bed plate 14, and a face plate 15. The bed plate and face' plate are constructed from cast metal, and the outer faces are curved substantially as shown in the drawings.
The face plate 15` is provided with a concave inner surface 16, the curvature whereof is shaped to conform with the bend of the forced down upon the guard lingers 17 of the guard plate 13, as shown best in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The plate 15 is drawn o this position by the manipulation of an elongated nut 18, which is internally threaded, the threads registering with the threads of a screw shank 19 with which the handle 20 is provided. The nut 18 operatively engages'a cross head 21, the arms whereof are united by a collar 22 which tits pivotally in an annular groove 23 formed in the uut 18, as seen best in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The arms of the cross head 21 extend between posts 24, and are shaped to enter and register with-bayonet slots 25 with which said posts are provided at the lower end. The posts 24, 24 being thus operatively connected with the nut 18 and handle 2() by means of the cross head 21, and the handle 20 bearing as it does upon the guard plate 13, it will be seen that by the manipulation of the nut 18, the'face plate 15 will be drawn toward or removed from the bed plate 14 and guard plate 13, .to increase or decrease the pressure on the blade 12, forcing the same to assume the position shown in Fig. 3, or permitting the same to assume the position shown in Fig. 4.
To hold the handle 20 on the guard plate 13, a short stud screw 26 is mounted upon the cross bar 27 of the guard plate 13,. The guard plate 13 is provided with circular orifices 2S to permit the passage therethrough of the posts 24. l
One of the. objects ot the present invention being to provide a tool which may be packed within the smallest limits, the posts 24 are pivotall)T mounted 0n short studs 29 integrally formed or rigidly mounted upon the face plate 15. is adjusted upon said posts, and the studs 29 on the face plate 15. The bed plate Mis mounted upon the guard plate 13, the edges of the bed plate extending below undercut ridges 32 integrally formed on said guard plate 14. lVhen the orifices 28 and 31 register` theposts 2t are extended therethrough, and the tool is ready to receive the handle 2O and cross head 21 connected therewith.
It will be noted that when the posts 24 are extended as above described. through the orifices in the bed plate 14 and guard plate 13, the joints between said posts and the studs 29 to which they are pivotally connectedfare encompassed within `the orifices in said bed plate and guard plate, in this position serv- CII ing to lock said thereof.
The handle 20 is suitably provided with a tapped bore at the end thereof the threads of which register with the threads of the stud screw 26. When the handle 20 is firmly seated on the back of the guard plate 13, the arms of the cross head 21 are rotated to register with the entrance opening of the bayonet slots 25. In this adjustment, the nut 18 is manipulated to aline the arms of the cross head 21 with said slots. After the adjustment is effected, and the ends of said arms have been inserted in the slots, as shown best in Fig. 7 of the drawings, the nut 18 is manipulated to travel on the shank 19 and away from the guard plate 13. When the arms of the cross head 21 are drawn to the lower end of t-he vertical extension of the bayonet slot 25, thereafter theI pull of the arms upon the post 21 and the pull of the plate 15 on the blade 12 forces the outer edges of said blade toward the plate 13. bending the same over the plate 14, until said edges rest in close proximity to the lingers 17, as seen in Fig. 3A of the drawings.
It is obvious that by varying the extent otl the manipulation of the nut 1S, the cutting edges ot' the blade 12 may be removed from or drawn to the lingers 17, and it is equally obvious that the degree ot' proximity thus ett'ected between said blade and said fingers may be widely varied.
After use, the parts are (lisassembled by manipulating the nut 18unt-il the arms ofthe cross head 21 are movd to register with the horizontal extensions of the slots 25, to he withdrawn therefrom by rotating said cross head. The posts 24 are now free to be withdrawn from the orifices 28 and 3 of the guard plate 1?, bed plate 14, and from the corresponding orifices formed in the blade 1:2. The bed plate 14 is now slipped from its engagement with. the guard plate 13, and the guard plate 13 freed from engagement with the handle 20. It willnow be joints or prevent the folding lfound that. the various parts above enumerated are individually separated, and may be readily and thoroughly cleaned. lVhen thereafter the parts are placed in a packing case, the posts 24 are folded upon the' plate 15. The thickness of the various members constituting the completed tool, when assembled, is thus reduced to the minimum or to the necessary thickness required for the handle 20.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent r- 1. A safety razor. comprising a detachable concave-convex face plate: a. detachable corresponding bed plate having a convex name to this specification in the 'surface to fit within the concave surface of said face plate; a guard plate having undercut lateral ridges to hold said bed plate and further provided with guard fingers, said bed plate and face plate having registering orifices adjacent the ends thereof; two studs rigidly mounted on said face plate to register with said orifices in said bed plate and said guard plate; a plurality of postspivotally connected with said studs; a handle mounted on said guard plate; and means connecting said handle and said posts to draw said face plate toward said guard plate and fingers thereon.
2. A safety razor, comprising a detachable concavo-convex face plate; a detachable corresponding bed plate having a convex surface to tit within the concave surface of said face plate; a guard plate having undercut lateral ridges to hold said bed plate, and further provided with guard fingers, said bed plate and face plate having registering orifices adjacent the ends thereof; two studs rigidly mounted on said face plate to register with said oritices in said bed plate and said guard plate; a plurality of posts pivotally connected with said studs; a screwthreaded member formed on said handle; a nut engaging said screw-threaded member; and across head mtatively engaging said nut, to be. moved thereby, the ends of said cross head being adapted to holdingly en` gage said posts to move the same and the face plate connected therewith.
3. A safety razor, comprising a detachable concave-convex face plate; a detachable corresponding bed plate having a convex surface to fit within the concave surface of said face plate; a guard plate having undercut lateral ridges to hold said bed plate, and further provided with guard 4fingers, said bed plate and face plate having' registering orifices adjacent the ends thereof; two studs rigidly mounted on said face plate to register with said orifices in said bed plate and said guard plate: a plurality of posts pivotally connected with said studs and having. formed in the ends thereof bayonet slots: a screw-threaded member formed on said handle; a nut engaging said serew-threaded member; and a cross head rotatively engaging said nut to be moved thereby, the ends of said cross head being adapted for insertion within said bayonet slots to engage said posts.
