To all whom, t may concern .Be it known that I, Vieron D. Riinwicit, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Merchantville, in the connty of Camden d and Stateof New Jersey, have invented eertain new and usefull Improvements in Foot- ()perated Valves, of which the following is a specification. A
rlhis invention relates to improvements in foot operated valves.
The primary objectl of the invention is the provision of elements designed to render the assembling and dis-assembling of a foot operated valve an easy and rapid operation,
including the seating of the spring actuator.
A foot operated valve iscovered by my Letters Patent #1,004,467, dated September 26,1911, and the present invention differs from the same in the specific formation d@ of certain of the elements and in the man ner o f dis-assemblin the, parts, While it resembles the same in ld'eing foot operated and of the general type known as push button valves. During the service and use of these valves, it is advantageous to provide a 'ready and easy means whereby the washer and packing carrying parts are readily accessible for the purpose of renewing the wearing elements, and 1 now provide coinilete valve mechanisms adapted to be readily inserted and Withdrawn froma primary valve body or casing. This provision also includes means for forcing the valve plug from a tapered bore of the easing upon a movement effecting a withdrawal of the general valve elements. '.lhere is Yfurther provided a serviceable closedl form ot valve casing having a drainage. outlet leading therefrom for exhausting any fluid accumulatiiig around the valve operating mechanism during the operation thereof.
More specific objects of the invention are the provision of a locking means between the steni head and a plug sleeve whereby a forced rotation of the former results in lift ing said plug sleeve from the casing.
With these main objects in view and others that will appear as the nature `of the invention is better understood, the same 0 consists in the novel combination and arn rangement of parts hereinafter fully `described, illustrated 1n the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring more in detail to the drawings, a closed substantially tubular valve casing or body 15v is eniployedliaving at its, lower end inlet. and outlet ports 1G and 17 respectively, the latter being of substantially the ordinary construction. Said casing is pro vided vwith the top annular flange 18 adapted to receive the casing within an opening of the floor 19 with said lianges seated thereon or in a inortise therein and secured by holdfast devices Q0' if desired. Within the lower part of the easing 15 and including that portion between the inlet and outlet. thereof,

Said plugbeing provided with a central bore 28, slidably receives the reciprocatory valve stem 24, which at its lower end has the, annulaipiston .25 working in the enlarged portion 2G of said bore. Said valve stein at its lower end being provided with a screw-threaded bore is adapted to receive the screw 27 of the cup washer 28, the latter adapted to receive and position the bib washer 2). The plug is iiori'nally positioned above the bottom 3() of the valve casing providing the water chamber 31 in the bottom thereof and within the upper portion of which the recessed end 39. of the valve plug extends, the cup washer and bib washer on the lower end of the valve stem being therein reciprocated upon an operation of' the valve for seating and unseatiiig said washer from contact with the annular flange 33A at the. lower periphery of the enlarged bore. 26.
rlhe plug 22 upon a plane normally in alinelnent with the inlet 16 is provided wit-li 'Y the annular recess 34 and from which at four diametrically opposed points inlet ports 35 communicate with the enlarged central bore 26. Corresponding with the normal position of said recess 34, the valve casing is provided with a coperating annular recess 36 and by which construction, it will be at once evident that the entrance of a fluid through the nipple 16 fills the annular recesses 34 and 36 and from whence the fluid passes through the ports 35, into the recess 26 and thence to the bottom chamber 31 under control of the valve stern washer 29 and from whence it leaves the casing through the outlet nipple 17. The valve plug is further provided with an inclined external annular shoulder 37 and upon which is seatedv the plug packing 38 in connection with which a slight enlargement of the casing bore at 39 may be provided if desired. Seated around said valve plug and positioned upon the plug packing and adapted for retaining the latter in closed contact with the plug and thereby firmly positioning the plug within the casing, is the tubular plug sleeve 40 provided with side cutaway portions 41 and being externally screwthreaded at the collared top 42 thereof for engagement with the internally screwthreaded portion 43 at the upper end of the v alve casing. It is apparent, that as the lower annular collar 45 of said plug sleeve removably iits the slightlycontracted bore 46 of the casing, that said contact-ing elements may be screw-threaded at these points if desired, so that the plug sleeve may have a screw-threaded engagement with the casing at either or both the topA and bottom thereof.
The plug sleeve, as will he evident, is removable from the casing by unscrewing the screw-threaded engagement therewith and for the purpose of connecting said sleeve with the valve plug so that the latter may be simultaneously acted upon, a jack washer 47 is adapted to be positioned around the contracted shoulder 48 of the plug by inserting the same through the interrupted portion 49 of the plug sleeve and seated upon the bottom collar 45, all of which is made possible by the interrupted side 50 of said washer, as best shown in Fig. 5.
The stem packing cap 51 is seated upon the top of the plug and by reason of the convexity of its top forms with the inwardly inclined top 52 of the plug, a packing chamber adapted to receive a packing 53 which i may consist of asbestos saturated with vaseline. The bottom annular iiange 54 of the packing cap seats thereon' a helical spring 55 encircling the stem and normally main-l tained partly/compressed by the stem head 56 retained thereon by the head screw 57.
The present manner of securing the head upon the stem by means of the screw 57 and a .platey or carrier 58 and the locking of the head thereby with the plug sleeve to insu-re a rotation in unison of said sleeve vand head,v
form a material part of the invention. The carrier being provided with the circularperforation 59 adjacent one end thereof communicates with a central longitudinal slot 60 positioned centrally of the carrier and having a. circular counter-sunk portion 61 adjacent the said slot and of the same diameter as the stem. The stem is placed through the perforation 59 of the carrier and is slid therealong until the flattened portion 62 is reached upon the stem, whereupon said iiattened portion is moved into the slot 60 at which time the countersunk socket V61 will rest upon the lower shoulder formed upon the stem and by tightening the screw 57, it will be evident that all of the elements will be firmly locked together and that the outer ends 63 of the carrier will project from the.
head, sui'icient in length to be slidably received within the slots 8O of the sleeve, through the cut-out portions 64 of the depending fiange 65 of the head, which head and flange areslidably fitted within the internal smooth bore of the plug sleeve 40.
The portions of the, device exposed to view when in operation and included in the showing of Fig. 2 consist of a foot plate or push button member 66 adapted to have inscribed thereon aproper designation for the iiuid adapted to be controlled by the valve, such as, the letter H denoting that the valve is employed for hot water and that a pressure vexerted upon the plate will cause a flow of the same. A licor plate 67 adapted to encircle the foot plate which latter is slidable therein is received in the open upper end of the valve casing, and the same is preferably only retained therein by a Close frictional contact. F or preventing the relative turning of the foot plate 66, the same is provided with a radially-extending rib 68 slidably received in thc inner slot 69 of the Hoor plate and positioned a short distance beneath the upper surface thereof` In the general description of the present device, the assembling of the head upon the stem and positioned within the sleeve has been set forth as well as the locking of theV sleeve to the valve plug byvmeans of the jack washer and the positioning of the plug within the tapered bore of the casing. The
