To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLIo l3. Yaw, citizen of the United States and resident of Arlington, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type lVriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to tabulat ing mechanism for typewriting machines and its general object is to provide improved mechanism of the character specified the purpose more specifically stated being to improve the construction disclosed in my prior Patent No. 1,062,265 granted May 20, 1913.
in the prior construct-.imi aforesaid, a reversible tabulating mechanism was provided in which the reversing or change in the tabulat-ing mechanism to adapt it for working in opposite directions was effected by hand. By my present invention means are provided for effecting such change automath cally during the run of the carriage at predetermined points, the change being; caused by breaking theconnec-tion between the tabnlating mechanism and the carriage releasing mechanism. As a result if two sheets are enugloyech say for example, a. bill sheet and a tally strip, the tabulating mechanism may be adapted for regular tabulating while the bill sheet is in the printing; field and may be changed automatically for reverse tabulating when the tally strip enters the printing field. Furthermore, means are provided by the present invention for dispensing with the automatic changing means and for setting the tabulating mechanism by hand so that it may be adapted at will for regular tabulating' or for reverse tabulating; that is, by a movement of the carriage from ri pt to left and in the opposite direction.
To the above and other ends which will hereinafter appear my invention consists in the features of construction, combinations of devices and arrangements of parts hereina ft or described and particularly pointed out .in the claims.

As shown in Fig. 1 the frame of the machine comprising a base 1, posts 2 and a top plate 8, supports fixed track ways l which support and guide through anti-friction balls 5 a carriage 6 on which is shiftably mounted a platen 7. Cooperative with the front face of the platen are type bars 8 each pivoted on a stationary hanger 9 and coni'iected, through a train of devices comprising a link 10 a lever 11 and a second link 12 with a key lever 13, the kcy levers being fulcrumed on a supporting bar 14. and be mg each provided with a key 15. A releasable fecd 'ack 16 is secured to arms 17 fulcrumed at 18 on cars 19 fixed to the rear of the carriage. Said feed rack normally meshes with a feed pinion 2O operativcly connected with a pair of toothed cscapement wheels 21 with which cooperates a dog or detent 22 mounted on a rocker 23 connected by a link 2% with a crank arm 25 extending rearward from about the middle of a rock shaft 26. Near its ends said rock shaft provided with rearwardly ext-ending arms 27 from. which depend arms or links 28 supporting a universal bar 29 which underlies the key levers l3 and is operative by each of said levers and by the usual space bar (not shown) to actuate the dog 92 and operate the cscapemcnt devices to permit stephv-step letter feed movements of the carriage under the pull of a motor or spring drum 30 which is connected by a strap 31- with an arm 32 fixed to the carriage.
The parts thus far described are common to the No. 11 Remington machine. The tabulating' mechanism usually employed in connection with said Remington machine to release and arrest the carriage at predetermined points comprises a toothed stop bar 33 mounted on arms 3 1 fixed to and extending rearward from the carriage, said stop bar being adapted to receive adjustable tabulator or column stops 35 with which cotiperate the upper forwardly extending ends of a set of denominational stop levers 36 fulcrumed at 37 on a frame 38 secured to the main frame of the machine. The lower ends of said levers 36 are each provided with a. key connection comprising a push rod 39 having at its front end a tabulator key 40, the forward end portions of the push rods bearing in a frame 1 detachably secured to the base. When a tabulator key 10 is pushed in it operates through its push rod 39 to swing the connected stop lever 36 on its fulcrum and project the stop proper at the upper end of said lever into the path of the column stops on the carriage. Restoring springs 41 connected to the push rods 39 and to the frame 1 restore the stop levers 36 and their con nections to normal position when released after actuation. The tabulator keys 10 are also adapted to actuate carriage releasing devices comprising a bail or U-shaped frame 42 pivoted at 43 and carrying a release bar 44: which is slotted to afiord passage-ways for the rods 39 and is adapted to be actuated by collars 45 fixed to said rods in frontof said bar. When any push rod is actuated its collar 45 will act on the bar t to swing the bail 12 rearward. This movement causes a pair of parallel links 16 connected to said bail at its ends to actuate crank arms 47 and through them a universal rock shaft 18 to which they are fixed. Secured rigidly to said rock shaft and actuated by it is an angular lever member 19, said lever member being connected by a. link 50 with the carriage releasing devices proper. Said releasing devices proper replace in the present instance the usual lever member and comprise in effect a twopart lever member, the
two parts being levers in themselves, one
mounted on the other. Said two parts are ordinarily latched or locked together so as to act as a single member but the latch is releasable to break the two part member and permit the rear part thereof to be moved without affecting the forward part which carries the pinion that lifts and disconnects the feed rack 16 from the pinion 20.
As appears in Figs. 1 to 5, the releasing devices are supported on a bracket 51 of ordinary construction secured to the top plate by screws 52 and provided with upturned ears 53. These ears receive pivotscrews 5 1 on which is pivoted a pinion carrier or lever member 55 that is provided with bifurcations or arms 56 and 57. The member 55 provides bearings for the shaft 53 of a releasing pinion 59 which underlies the feed rack 16 to the right of the feed pinion 20 but is normally separated from l said rack. The right-hand arm 57 of the lever member 55 projects some distance rearward beyond its pivot 54 and has mounted on it or pivoted to it at 60 a lever 61. Said lever 61 is arranged inside of or to the right of the 57 and its rear arm normally extends backward from the arm 57 in substantially the same horizontal plane but is offset, curved or bent outwardly and rearwardly as shown in Fig. 3, its rear end being pivotally connected to the upper end of the actuating link 50. The arm of the lever 61 forward of the pivot 60 is pointed or sharpened, the upper face of said arm being substantially horizontal while its lower face inclines upward and forward, the nose 62 thus formed coiiperating with a latch or locking member The latch 63 is in the form of an upstanding arm narrowing at its free end, said arm being arranged inside of the arm 57. Atits lower end the arm63 is pivoted on a pivot screw 64: which is supported on a lug 57 extending downward from the arm 57, said pivot screw being maintained in place by a check nut 65 which cooperates with its outer threaded end, said nut screwing against the outer face of the lug 57 The arm or latch 63 is constantly urged rearward by a draw spring 66, the forward end of which is hooked over a lateral pin 67 on the arm 63 while its rear end hooks over a pin 68 extending laterally outward from an ear 57 rising from the arm 57.
The rear face or edge of the arm 63 is provided with a cut-out 69, the upper end of which forms a shoulder 70, and the spring 66 tends to maintain this shoulder 70 overlying and engaged with the nose 62 of the arm 61 as shown in Fig. 2, this figure corresponding with Fig. 1, although the details of the described construction are not disclosed in the latter figure. Obviously with the lever 61 locked in fixed relationship with the lever member 55 the two levers or parts will act as a single rigid device or member. As a result, at each tabulating operation the train of devices comprising the release bar 1 1, links 16, crank 47 and the arm or member 49 will operate to draw down the link 50 and this link in turn acting on the rear arm of the lever 61 will swing the two-part releasing mem er as a whole on the pivots 54, causing the pinion 59 to engage with the rack 16 and swing or lift the rack upward out of mesh with the pinion 20, thus releasing the carriage which will be drawn leftward by the spring drum until arrested by the engagement of the proximate column stop 35 with the projected denominational stop lever This mode of operation is substantially the same as the releasing operation of the ordinary Rent ington construction. When the parts are released they will be restored to normal posi tion by devices comprising a draw spring 71 anchored at one end to a stationary pin 72 and connected at its other end to a crank arm 73 on the rock shaft l8. The return movement of the connected parts 55 and 61 under the influence of said spring is limited by a stop pin 53 on the car 53, said stop pin being engaged by the tail of the arm 56 in rear of the pivot 54. If, on the other hand, the arm 63 be swung" forward to the position shown in Fig. 4 and in dotted lines inl ig. 2, the lever 61 will thereby be released or unlatched and obviously under a tabulating operation the link 50 will merely act to swing said lever 61 idly on its pivot 60, said pivot remaining fixed and the lever member 55 remaining undisturbed or unaffected. The consequence will be that the carriage releasing mechanism will. be operatively disconnected from the tabulating mechanism, thus adapting said tabulating mechanism for reverse tabulating, as explained in. detail in my prior application Serial No. 738,235 aforesaid. In the present instance provision is made for swinging the arm or latch 63 forward to render it ineffective both by hand devices operative at will and also by devices actuated auton'iatieally during the run of the carriage.
The hand controlled devices or switching mechanism for releasing the latch or arm. 63 and rendering the carriage releasing devices ineffective by the tabulator keys are mounted wholly on the device or member 55 and comprise as shown in Figs. 2 to 5 a rotary device 74 which is arranged inside the cut-out 69 and extends transversely through the arm 57, bearing in an opening therein. Inside said arm 57 the rotary device 74 is provided with a radial off-set or cam device 75, and outside said arm 57 the device 74: is threaded to receive a finger piece or button 76, the latter being knurled. for convenience in turning, the rotary device or cam mem ber 74, 75 and the button 76 operating as a single member. Arranged between the finger button 76 and the outer face of the arm 57 is a bowed or dished friction spring plate or washer 77, circular in shape and having a hole or cut-out to fit over the device 74. Also the button 7 6 is cut out at one side, as indicated at 78, the ends of this cut-out cooperating with a stop pin 79 that projects laterally outward from the arm 57, said pin limiting turn ng movements of the cam. member. The spring plate 77 is slightly out out or notched to afford a passage for said pin 79. Normally the cam proper or radial projection 75 extends downward lengthwise of the cutout 69, shown in Fig. 2. At this time the upper end of the cut-out 78 is engaged with the pin 79. If the finger piece 76 be turned clockwise the cam 75 will engage with the wall of the cut-out 69 and will cam or swing the arm 63 forward against the tension of the spring 66. This movement will continue until the parts are arrested by the engagement of the lower end of the cut-out 78 with the pin 79, at which time the arm. 63 will be in the position shown in Fig. 4t and in dotted lines in Fig. The lever 61 will not be affected by this operation but will remain in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2 and in dotted lines in Fig. 1-, being maintained in this position by the link 50. The arm or latch 63 and the hand controlling devices will be maintained in the Fig. 4 position by the friction engendered by the springs 66 and 77. It will be understood that with the parts thus set or arranged the operation of the tabulator keys will merely project the associate stop levers 36 and will not operatively affect the carriage releasing mechanism, the only result being to swing the lever 61 idly on its pivot 60 from the dotted line to the full. line position in Fig. 4. This disconnection between the tabulator and releasing mechanism may be maintained as long as desirerh it being" only necessary to restore the cam member 75 to cause the latch 63 to return to effective engagement. Also it will be understood that when the latch 63 is effective as in Fin; 2 the carriage will be released at each operation of the tabulator keys as is usual. and that this mode of opera tion may continue at will or until the connection is broken by manipulation of the cam. member 74-76 as described.
The devices for automatically controlling the latch so that it will be rendered inoperative at a predetermined point in the travel of the carriage in one direction and again operative at a predetern'iined point during the travel in the opposite direction. comprise an automatic cam member or actuatinp; device supported on the carriage and which is adjustable so that it may be either employed or dispensed. with as desired. ()t' course when said automatic device is out of use the control of the latch 63 is effected through the finger piece 76, while when the automatic device is in use the finger piece is not employed for adjusting purposes. The automatic devices or mechanism are illustrated in Figs. 1 and 6 to 8. They comprise a Ushaped member 80 having; parallel arms 81, the ends wl'iereof are enlarged as indicated at 32 to receive pivot pins 83 that bear in openings in parallel arms of a vertically arranged bracket 84, said bracket being of an. inverted U-shape and being secured by screws 84) to the rear face of the stop bar at its right-hand end. Suitable provision for adjustment of the cam 68 lengthwise of the carriage should preferablv be made as by slotting the screw openings 64- in the bracket. it. draw spring is anchored at one end to a pin 86 project-icg. from the end of the sto a bar 33. the other end of said draw spring being hooked over a pin 87 projecting laterally outward from the right-hand arm 81. The forward left-hand corner of the device 80 is cut off to provide an inclined or cam edge 88. The right-hand end of said device is extended beyond the arm 81 to provide a finger or handle 89 by which the device may be manipulated or swung into and out of operative position on its support Set.
Then the device 80 is in operation it is horizontally disposed as shown in Figs. 6 and 7. It is maintained in this position by the spring 85 which holds a stop pin 80 on the device 80 in contact with the under face of the right-hand arm or bracket 34. When thus arranged the cam edge 88 of the device during carriage movements follows a path which is intercepted by the upper end of the arm 63. Consequently as a result of a sufficient extent of leftward movement of the carriage under a tabulating run or otherwise, the cam edge 88 will be brought into engagement with the arm 63 as shown in full lines in Fig. 7 and as the carriage move ment continues said cam edge will cam or force said arm forward to the dotted line position in Fig. 7, this position corresponding with the dotted line position of Fig. 2. The lever 61 is thereby freed from the control of the arm or latch 63 and the carriage releasing devices operatively disconnected from the tabulating mechanism. During further leftward movement of the carriage the forward edge of the member 80 will slide along in contact with the arm 63 and will maintain said arm in the inoperative or dotted line position. The consequence is that tabulating operations of the keys d0 which may be performed while the forward edge of the member 80 is engaged with the arm 63 will serve merely to project the connected stop levers 36 without effecting the release of the carriage. As a result of the releasing mechanism being ineffective by the keys so, tabulating operations in the reverse direction or from left toward the right may be convenient-1y performed during this period. In the preferred construction the parts are so arranged and adjusted that the automatic disconnection or throw-out of the carriage releasing mechanism will take place when a narrow sheet or tally strip arranged at the right-hand end of the platen, which may be a two-part platen, enters the printing field, so that tabulating operations performed in writing the items or entries on the tally strip will be reverse in character; that is, when writing on the tally strip the operator, after completing an entry, pushes in the appropriate tabulator key and then operates the line spacing handle to line space the tally strip and retract the carriage until arrested by the projected stop lever, thus positioning the tally strip for writing the next entry under the one just written.
hen the carriage is retracted far enough toward the right to carry the tally strip out of the printing field, the edge of the device 80 will pass out of engagement with the arm or latch 63 and said arm will be restored by the spring 66 to normal position against the edge of the device 75, thus restoring the locking device or shoulder 70 into engagement with the nose 62 so that thereafter the tabulating operation will be of the ordinary character, actuation of the tabulator keys operating to proiect the associate stop levers 36 and also to release the carriage from the control of its escapement or letter feed devices for a leftward tabulating run. It will be understood that tabulating entries during t-his period are made at the left of the tally strip and usually on a bill sheet separate therefrom; although, of course, it is not essential that the regular tabulating entries nd the reverse tabulating entries be on separate sheets, but they may be on the same sheet.
The reverse mode of tabulating is particularly suitable in listing operations, since after a run or movement of the carriage which effects at. a predetermined point the automatic unlocking of the lever 61, as has been described, the operator may write a number of short items, usually numbers, one under the other constituting the list, and in between such items need only press the desired tabulator key and retract the carriage until arrested, at the same time line spacing the sheet on which the list is being written. Ordinarily the full data or entries to which the items on the list pertain are written in lines or in columns side by side at the left of the list, such entries usually being made, as has been stated, on a separate sheet and for this work the regular mode of tabulating is preferable, an entry being written in one column and then the proper tabulating key being depressed to release the carriage and cause it to run until arrested in position for writing in the neXt desired column, and so on until the full data pertaining to any par ticular list has been completed at the left, after which the list is written by the aid of the reverse tabulating operations, as has been described. The present invention provides a means, as has been seen, for automatically changing from one style of tabulating to the other as the sheets or parts of the sheet in connection with which the different styles of tabulating are to be employed enter the printing field.
Ti hen it is desired to dispense with the use of the automatic cam device 80, the operator merely swings the finger piece 89 downward and rearward, and as soon as the dead center is passed the spring 85 will operate to swing the member 81 upward against the rear face of the bracket Set, as in Fig. 8. Thus said member is swung and maintained out of the path of the arm (53 so that said arm may be controlled at will by the hand device or finger piece '76 without interference from the automatic controlling device 80. it will be seen that by dispensing with the automatic controlling devices the tabulato-r may be used in the ordinary way throughout the length of the platen, or of the two platens if the machine is a divided platen. machine; and, on the other hand, may also be used throughout the length of both platens at will for reverse tabnlating operations from left to ri ht.
The present embodiment of my invention while coi'i'iparatively simple in construction and mode of operation has been applied to a well known tynewriting machine without greatly changing or altering the regular construction, and enables the functions and uses of the tabulating mechanism to be considerably extended.
Various changes may be made without departing from my invention.

1. In a. typewriting machine, the combination of key controlled tabulating mechanism effective to arrest the carriage at predetermined points, carriage releasing devices, and means operative auton'iat-ically to render said devices inoperative by the tabulator keys.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination of key controlled tabulating mechanism effective to arrest the carriage at predetermined peints in either direction of its travel, carriage releasing devices, and automatic means for throwing said devices into and out of the control. out the tabulator keys.
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination of key controlled tabulating mecl'ianism ell'eetive to arrest the carriage at predetermined points in either direction of its travel, carriage releasing devices, means operative automatically to render said devices inoperative by the tabulator keys, devices for rendering said automatic means inoperative, and hand controlled means for throwing said carriage releasing devices out of the control of the tabulator keys.
:4. In a typewriting machine, the combination of key controlled tabula-ting mechanism effective to arrest the carriage at predetermined points, carriage releasing devices, automatic means for throwing said devices into and out of the control of the tabulator keys, and separate hand operated means for at will throwing said devices into and out of the control of the tabulator keys.
5. In a typewriting machine, the combination of key controlled tabulating mechanism eli ective to arrest the carriage at predetermined poiuts, carriage releasing devices normally operative by the tabulator keys, and means operating automatically to render the tabulator keys inoperative on said carriage releasing devices.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination of key controlled tabulating mechanism effective to arrest the carriage at predetermined points, carriage releasing devices normally operative by the tabulator keys to release the carriage, and a separate key controlled switching mechanism carried wholly by certain of said releasing devices and etl'ective to throw said devices out of the control of the tabulator keys.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination of key controlled tab ilating mechanism effective to arrest the carriage at predetermined points, carriage releasing devices normally operative by the tabulator keys and comprising two connected mem bers, means for maintaining a substantially mivarying relationship between said members during carriage releasing operations, and means for rendering said first named means inoperative.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of key controlled tabulating mechanism cllective to arrest the carriage at predeten mined points, carriage releasing dev. cs normally operative by the tabulator he s and comprising two connected members, means for maintaining a substantially unvarying relationship between said members during carriage releasing operations, and means operating autoimitically to render said first named means inoperative.
9. In a typcwriting machine, the combination of key controlled tabulating mechanism effective to arrest the carriage at PTO determined points, carriage releasing devices normally operative by the tabulator keys and comprising two connected menibers, means for maintaining a substantially unvarying relatimiship between said meme bers during carriage releasing operations, automatic means for rendering said first named means inopeative, and hand controlled means ilior rendering said first named means inoperative.
10. In a typewriting machine, the coinbination of key controlled tabulating mechanism ellective to arrest the carriage at. predetermined points, carriage releasing de vices normally operative by the tabnlator keys and comprising two connected lcte" members, a latch for maintaining a substantially unvarying relationship between said lever members during carriage relcas ing operations so that they will act as asingle lever member, and means for rendering said latch inoperative.
11. In a typewriting machine, the combination of key controlled tabulating mechanism etlective to arrest the carriage at pre determined points, carriage releasing devices normally operative by the tabulator keys and comprising two connected lever members, a latch for maintaining a substan tially unvarying relationship between said lever members during carriage releasing operations, and means operative automatically to render said latch inoperative.
12. In a typewriting machine, the combination of key controlled tabulating mecha nism effective to arrest the carriage at predetermined points, carriage releasing devices normally operative by the tabulator keys and comprising two connected lever members, a latch for maintaining a substantially unvarying relationship between said lever members during carriage releasing operations so that they will actas a single lever member, automatic means for rendering said latch inoperative, and hand controlled means for rendering said latch inoperative.
13. In a typewriting machine, the combination of key controlled tabnlating mechanism eitective to arrest the carriage at pre determined points, carriage releasing devices normally operative by the tabulator keys and comprising two connected members, means for maintaining a substantially unvarying relationship between said members during carriage releasing operations, and automatic means for rendering said first named means inoperative, said automatic means comprising a cam on the car riage of the machine.
14. In a typewriting machine, the combination of key controlled tabulating mecha nism efiective to arrest the carriage at predetermined points, carriage releasing devices normally operative by the tabulator keys and comprising two connected men1- bers, means for maintaining a substantially unvarying relationship between said members during carriage releasing operations, automatic means comprising a. cam on tln traveling carriage of the machine for rendering said first named means inoperative, and means for at will affording movement of said cam to an inoperative position.
15. In a typewriting machine, the combination of key controlled tabulating mecha nism effective to arrest the carriage at predetermined points, carriage releasing devices normally operative by the tabulator keys and comprising two connected members, means for maintaining a substantially unvarying relationship between said members during carriage releasing operations, and means on the carriage of the machine and operating during the travel of the carriage to render said first named means inoperative.
16. In a typewriting machine, the combination of key controlled tabulating mecha nism effective to arrest the carriage at predetermined points, carriage releasing devices normally operative by the tabulator keys and comprising tWo connectedmembers, holding means for maintaining a substantially unvarying relationship between said members during carriage releasing operatio-ns, automatic means on the carriage of the machine operating to render said first named means inoperative, devices for rendering said automatic means ineffective during the travel of the carriage, and hand operated means for rendering said holding means inoperative.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of key controlled tabulating mechanism, carriage releasing devices normally operative by the tabulator keys and comprising two members one mounted on the other, and a latch for maintaining a substantially unvarying relationship between aid members during carriage releasing op erations, said latch being releasable to render the tabulator keys inetl'ective to release the carriage.
18. in a typewriting machine, the combina tion of key controlled tabulating mechanism, carriage releasing devices normally operative by the tabulator keys and comprising two members, and a latch pivoted on one member and effective on the other to maintain it in operative relation with the first member during carriage releasing operations, said latch being releasable to operatively disconnect the tabulator keys and the carriage releasing devices.
19. In a typewriting machine, the combi nation of key controlled tabulating mechanism, carriage releasing devices normally operative by the tabulator keys and comprising two members, a latch pivoted on one member and eiiect-ive on the other to maintain itin operative relation with the first member during carriage releasing operations, a spring for maintaining said latch in effective position, and means for swinging said latch to inoperative position.
20. In a typewriting machine, the combination of key controlled tabulating mechanism, carriage releasing devices normally operative by the tabulator keys and com prising two members, a latch efiective to maintain said members in cooperative relation during carriage releasing operations, a spring for maintaining said latch in efiective position, and a hand controlled cam for swinging said latch to inoperative position and for maintaining it in inoperative posi tion.
21. In a typewriting machine and in tabulating mechanism, the combination of carriage releasing devices normally operative by the tabulator keys and comprising two mem bers, a latch device effective to maintain said members in cooperative relationship during carriage releasing operations, and a cam member supported on the carriage and effective to release said latch from operative position during movement of the carriage and to maintain said latch in released position.
22. In a typewriting machine and in tabulating mechanism, the combination of carriage releasing devices normally operative by the tabulator keys and comprising two members, a latch device effective to maintain said members in cooperative relationship during carriage releasing operations, a supporting bracket on the carriage, and a cam member mounted on said bracket and effective to automatically release said latch from engaging position, said bracket being adjustable to afford variation in the point of operation of said cam.
23. In a typewriting machine, the combination of key controlled tabulating mechanism, carriage releasing devices normally operative by thetabnlator keys and coin prising two members one mounted on the other, a latch mounted on one member and effective on the other to maintain it in cooperative relation with the first member during carriage releasing operations, a spring for maintaining said latch in eitective position, and a hand cont-rolled cam for swinging said latch to inoperative position and for maintaining it in inoperative position, said cam being supported on the same memher that supports said latch.
24. In a typewrit-ing machine, the combination of key controlled tabulating mechanism, carriage releasing devices normally operative by the tabulator keys and comprising two members, a latch mounted on one member and etlective on the other to maintain it in cooperative relation with the first member during carriage releasing operations, a spring for maintaining said latch in effective position, and a cam on the carriage operating automatically during the traveling movement of the carriage to render said latch ineilective.
In a typewriting machine, the combination of key controlled tabulating mechanism, carriage releasing devices normally operative by the tabulator keys and comprising two members one mounted on the other, a latch mounted on one member and etlective on the other to maintain it in co operative relation with the first member during carriage releasing operations, a spring for maintaining said latch in elteetive position, a hand controlled cam for swinging said latch to inoperative position and for maintaining it in inoperative position, and a cam on the carriage operative automatically to render said latch inetlective.
26. In a typewriting machine, the combination of key controlled tabulating mechanism, carriage releasing devices normally operative by the tabulator keys and comprising two members, a spring pressed latch effective to maintain said members in cooperative relation during carriage releasing operations, a hand controlled cam for swinging said latch to inoperative position and for maintaining it in inoperative position, and a cam on the carriage operative automatically to render said latch inettective, said automatic cam being settable at will in position of disuse 27. In a typewriting machine, the combination of key controlled tabulating mechanism, carriage releasing devices normally operative by the tabulator keys and comprising two men'ibers, a spring pressed latch mounted on one member and effective on the other to maintain it in cooperative relation with the first member during carriage releasing operations, a cam member pivotally supported on the carriage, a spring for maintaining said cam in effective position, said cam member being operative during traveling movements of said carriage to render said latch inclfective.
28. In a typewriting machine, the co1nbination of key controlledtabnlating mechanism, carriage releasing devices normally operative by the tabulator keys and comprising two members, a latch ell ective to maintain said members in cooperative relation during carriage releasing operations, a
cam member 'iivotally supported on the (52L1- riage, a. spring for maintaining said cam in effective position, said cam member being operative during traveling movements of said carriage to rend r said latch ineffective, said. cam member being swing-able to an inoperative position and said spring -maintaining said cam member in inoperative position after it has been moved thereto.
29. In a typewriting machine and in tabulating mechanism, the combination of tabulator stops coiiperative to arrest the car- .riage at a predetermined point, means including a key for effecting such cooperation, carriage releasing devices controlled by said key, and automatic means for rendering said key ineffective on said carriage releasing devices.
30. In a typewriting machine and in tabulating mechanism, the combination of tabulator stops cooperative to arrest the carriage at a predetermined point, means including a key for effecting such cooperation, carriage releasing devices controlled by said key, automatic means for rendering said key ineffective on said carriage releasing devices, and hand controlled means for also rendering said key ineffective on said carriage releasing devices.
31. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a tabulator stop thereon, a stop on the frame of the machine, carriage releasing devices, key connections eflective to project the frame stop into the path of the carriage stop and also to release v releasing devices controlled by said key, and
means operative automatically to silence said devices.
33. In a typewriting machine and in tabulating mechanism, the combination of tabulator stops cooperative to arrest the car riage at a predetermined point, means including a key for effecting such cooperation, carriage releasing devices controlled by said key, and means operating automatically to silence said devices, said means operating at a predetermined point in the travel of the carriage so that with the printing point at one side of said predetermined point said key is effective to release the carriage and cause said stops to cooperate and with the printing point at the other side of said pre determined point said key is efiective only to position the stops for cooperation when the carriage may be thereafter moved to bring them into engagement.
3st. In a typewriting machine and in tabu lating mechanism, the combination of tabu lator stops cooperative to arrest the carriage at a predetermined point, means including a key for effecting such cooperation, carriage releasing devices controlled by said key, and means operating automatically to silence said devices, said means operating at a predetermined point in the travel of the carriage and being adapted to afiord variation in the location of such predetermined point.
35. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a traveling carriage, tabular stops cooperative to arrest the carriage, mechanism including a key for effecting such cooperation, releasable carriage feeding devices, means for disconnecting certain of said devices to release the carriage, said means including a lever member, a second lever member, a locking device for maintaining a fiXed relationship between said lever members and transmitting motion from said second lever member to said first lever member, and connections between said lever members and said key, and means for rendering said locking device ineffective.
36. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a traveling carriage, tabulator stops cooperative to arrest the carriage, mechanism including a key for efiecting such cooperation, releasable carriage feeding devices, means for disconnecting certain of said devices to release the carriage, said means including a lever member, a second lever member, a locking device for maintaining a fixed relationship between said lever members and transmitting motion from said second lever member to said first lever memher, a link, a rock shaft connected to said second lever member by said link, a uni versal bar connected to said rock shaft, and
a device operative by said key for actuating said universal bar, and means for rendering said locking device inoperative.
37. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a traveling carriage, tabulator stops cooperative to arrest the carriage, mechanism including a key for efiecting such cooperation, releasable carriage feeding devices, means for disconnecting certain of said devices to release the carriage, said means including a lever member, a second lever member, a locking device for maintaining a fixed relationship between said lever members and transmitting motion from said second lever member to said first lever member, a link,- a rock shaft connected to said second lever member by said link, a universal bar connected to said rock shaft, and a device operative by said key for actuating said universal bar, a cam on the carriage for acting on said locking devlce to automatically render it ineffective, and a hand controlled cam on the first lever mem her also operative to render said locking device ineffective.
