To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, FRANK J. SCHRAEDER, Jr.. a citizen of the United States, residing in the county of Dopage and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful-Improvement in-Loading Y and Unloading Apparatus, of which the folreceptacles which nation ot' parts hel and more particularly pointed out 1n the matic measuring lowing is a specification.
My invent-ion belongs to of devices known as coal' and relates more particularly to an apparatus for receiving, measuring., controlling and discharging material int-o buckets or arc hoisted or conveyed that general class and discharged into storage bins from whichthe material may be further conveyed or discharged by gravity to where desired.
'lhe linvention has amongits objects the production ot' a simple, durable, eilicientand satisfactory apparatus of the kind described for automatically controlling the flow of material to be transferred and is in the nature ot' ya divisional applica-tion'for an autoand loading device shown and described in my application for improvements in conveying syst-ems filed Dec.
27, 1910, Serial No. 1912 No. 1015251.'
'.lo this end my invention consists in the novelconstruction, arrangement and combiein shown and described 599302 issued Jan. 16,
claims.
Referring to the drawings in which like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts: Figure l is asectional ele vation ot' niy apparatus showing;r the loader after its contents has been" discharged into' the bucket or conveying rdccptiwle. Fig. 2 is a, sectional elevation of my loader showing the discharge gate in closed position and the filling zfrate iii-open position. Fig. 3 is a. sectional front elevation taken at,w-m liigs. l and 2 showing my invent-ion where two loaders are used in combination with two receptacles. Fig'. 4 is a. diagrammatic View of my preferred s vstcm of gate control. Fig. 5 is a. diagrammatic illustration ot a loader filling gatefin form of construction such as is shown in my patent for conveying: system, previously referred to.
yIn the illustrations l show my invention as applied to a railway coaliug station usingr two loaders and two receptacles which altiernately convey the coal or material from speemcanon of Leners Patent. Application flied June, 1912. Serial lo-.701,425

the receiving hopper to the storage bin. As will be seen, it is obvious that by lmmaterial or simple changes, the system may consist of one loa-der and one lrece tacle, or by dupti; outing the parts shown t `e station may contain any number of loaders and'receptacles. Inasmuch as the loaders and various parts are similar, a detached description of one will suffice. l
Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings l represents'a track (partly shown) over which the loaded material or coal cars are brought and discharged into thereceiving` hopper 2, which slopes toward the loaders and is counter-hop ered' so that all of thematerial is available. The' discharge openings of the 'receiving hopperl have chutes 3 projecting toward or into the loadeif measuring chutes or hoppers 4.- The bottom" 4* of the measuring chute slopes, downwardly toward vthe bucket ceptacle. 5,'and the How receiving hopper of material rom the 2l through the chutes 3 is controlled by the gate 6 which has side arms 7 pivoted at 8. the loader filling gate or curved plate 6 is in closed position and'prevents the flow o material from the receiving` hopper into the loader measuring chute or hopper 4:. .An apron like discharge gate 9with sides 9 andv pivoted atvlOcontrols the flow of material from the loader measuring chute 4 into the bucket or receptacle 5. Fig. 1 shows the discharge gate in open position and by doti lted lines inclosedposition. vIt may be noted- 1ere, constructed in the form of a vertically slid` gaterl) is in closed position as shown in Fig'. 2 and the fillin A,crate (i with its arms 7 has revolved about lts pivot 8 into open position, the coal or material Hows'by gravity from the receiving 4hopper into the measuring chute or hopper 4. l'
The latches 11 arranged at the sides of the measuring hopper 4 are pivoted at 12 and engage the lugs 9b which project from the sides 9u and hold the discharge gate l) in closed position. operatively connected to these latches at llt are the bars 13 which ex- `tend downwardly to the horizontal bar l5 {to which also are attached the operating.r i llevers 16 shown in Figs. l, 2 and 3. The llevara 162 are pvotally supported at 17 and.
As shown in Fig. l
that the discharge gate might also be or conve ing re.
are provided with pivoted ends 18 arranged to cooperate with the extension 19 `on the receptacle 5, so that as the receptacle is hoisted in the'shaft and the roller 20 closing the gate 9 which is locked by the latches 11, the extension 19 is permitted to pass without operating the latches.
I have preferred to show the receptacle 5 in the form of a skip bucket with rollers 21 and 22 which travel between the 'guides 23 and 24..- Any other bucket or conveying apparatus may be used and any means may be provided'for dumping or discharging the conveying receptacle.- The receptacle bail side arms 25', pivotally secured to the sides of the receptacle 5 at 26 shown in Fig. 1 are connected with a cross bar 27 at the center of which is attached the hoisting cable 28 which extends to the top of the shaft or discharging point and then passes over sheaves tothe hoisting drum. lVhen the skip bucket or receptacle is in its lowest position asishowrnin Fig. 1 it rests on the supports 29. i
y Within the path of the 'conveyingrece'p-I tacle is placed a bar 30 or its equivalent arranged between the guides 31. The cables.
grooves von each of the filling gate armsd 1. Another set of cables 37 or their equivalent, is secured -at 38 also to the filling gate arms 7 and grooves 41 on the gate' arms 7 with sheaves 39 and 40 guidethe cables 37.
tothe other loader where they pass around similar grooves 41 and secured to corre# spondi'ng points 38, thus connecting the two loader Vlling gates .in such manner that '-,when one is in open position the other is in 'closed position. The connection of the cables 32 and 37 I is shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 and more clearly in the Fig. 4: which shows my preferred ,system of connecting the loader illingigates when two loaders are used in a structure. -When only one loader is u sed in combination with one conveying receptacle' the ends of cables 37 are secured to a bar similar to 30 which is placed between guides similar to.31 and is operated by the bucket or receptacle counterweight.
Referring to Fig. 4,' which is a diagram-i` matic illustration of my preferred system or manner vof operating the loader illing'gates when two 'loaders are used in combination with two receptacles, the filling gate 6 on the left hand side ofY the illustration is shown in closed position preventing the flow ot' material from the receiving hopper, through the chute 3 into the measuring chute 4 which has discharged its contents into the receptacle. Before reaching its loading point or the bottom of' the shaft, the receptacle engages the bar 3G in drawrevolves the filling gate 6 of the other loader into open position as shown on the right handside of illustration or Fig. 4, the cables 37 or their equivalent connecting the gates in such manner that when one is open the other is closed. After the receptacle 5, cooperating with the left hand filling gate and loader, receives its load, it is hoisted to the top'vwhere it discharges into the storagelbin and in the meantime the right hand bucket or receptacle descends to the foot of the shaft, engages the bar 30, closing its cooperating filling gate I6 and simultaneously opening the filling gate 6 of the other loader, and then receives its measured quantity of material. This operation is continued untilall of the material isconveyed to the storage bin. e Now referring to Fig. 5,1 show a diagrammatic illustration of a Inodiliedsystem of control for the filling gates, such as is shown in my patent for conveying system #1015251 issued January 16,1912. Here the loaded receptacle operating the right hand gate 61, has ascended to the top, discharged its contents, engaged the bar 301,
opening its cooperating filling gate 61 and .simultaneously closing the other filling gate.
61 (shown on the `.left hand side). The cable 371 and 37 2 or its equivalent connects the lling gates in 'such manner that when one is closed the other is open. l
If only one bucket or receptacle is used in combination with one loader, the cables 37 in Fig. 4.; or cables 372 in Figr are connected to a bar similar to bar 30 arranged in the path of the bucket or receptacle counterweight (not shown) e The use and operation` of my invention may b e described as follows: When` the skip A or receptacle 5 in the right hand shaft referring to Fig. 3 has reached the top of ther shaft and discharged its contents, the associate skip or receptacle 5 in the left hand shaft, has reachedv the 4position 4shown in Figs. 1 and 3. In descending to the foot of its shaft, the receptacle 5 has engaged the y bar 30, or its equivalent, arranged within 'its path, drawing it between the guides 31 to its lowest position, as shown in` Fig. l, thereby exerting a pull on the cables 32 or their equivalent and revolving the loader iilling gate 6 about its pivots 8 into closed position, shown in Figs. 1 and 3. filling gate of the other loader is opened; the
two gates being connected (by cables 37' passing over sheaves 39 and 40) in such Simultaneously the v manner that when one is closed the other is y ill) normes path of the counterweight of the receptacle or extended to the top of the shaft so that the lilling gate is opened when the ship or receptacle discharges, and closed, when it reaches the loader. However, before reaching the toot of the shaft and landing on the supports 2f) the angle or projection 19, on the receptacle, engages the extending levers 1S operating,y the bars 13 upwardly, so that the latches 'll disengage the projections 9b and the pressureof the material against the gate plate 9 causes the discharge gate to open. This extension 19'is located on the receptacle at such a point and operates the levers 18 only when the roller :20 (at the top part of the receptacle) is just under the discharge gate 9, so that the bucket or receptacle descends,`the gate opens gradually and formsan extending slope with the measuring chute bottom fla. lll/'hen the receptacle reaches the landing points 29 as shown in Fig. 3, it has received a measured quant-ity of material and is ready to be hoisted or conveyed to its discharging point. In hoisting` or rising, the receptacle 5 closes the discharge. gate 9 which is counterweighted at 9 on the sides 9" so that the gate positively closes and is latched by the latches 1l pivoted on the sides of the measuring chute 4. il/"hen the receptacle rises, the projecting part 19 passes the extending levers 18 by swinging same about their pivot, as shown y,in dotted lines in Fig. 1. After the recep- `tacle lhas passed by, the pivoted ends drop to 'normal or operative position by lgravity.
lt may now be noted that the measuring chute'll of the loader coperating with the loaded receptacle (which is being hoisted) is empty, with both gates ,olE the loader ir. closed position, and it remains empty until the loaded receptacle reaches the top olf' the shaft. discharging its contents and the other empty bucket reaches the 'foot of the shaft operating the lilling gates so that it closes its loader filling gate and opens the coperating filling gate of the other loader. In this Way no measuring chute is relled until its cooperatingr receptacle reaches the top of the shaft and the other receptacle, (or counterweight when one receptacle is usedl roaches the foot of its shaft, thus preventing' a rcceptacle receiving; a double load in case ot being lowered into the foot ot -the shaft lol- 't'ore discharging 'its contents.
Figj shows a sectional elevation ot a loader with the discharge gate l) closed. the measuring chute 4t filled 'and the filling gate 6 brought to an open position" by the other receptacle (or counterweight), and thus the operation continues, each descending bucket or receptacle alternately voperating'v the lillinnr gates, discharging the measuringv lehnte, receiving the nieasured quantity or material and then conveying the material to the storage bins. lt be noted that the receptacle could be arranged to travel either vertically (as shown in the drawings) on an incline or late all y without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention it is obvious that various immaterial modificar tions may be madein the same without departing from the spirit of my invention, hence I do not wish to be understoodas lim itingl myself to the exact formfor construction or" parts hereinshown and described or uses mentioned.
