BRIGHT, a citizen of the United' States, and

a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flexible Beaters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numbers of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specilication.

This invention relates to improvements in flexible beaters of that class intended to be secured on av rotatable shaft for operating the same, as, for example, in a machine for dehairing carcasses. Suchv beaters have heretofore been constructed of canvas or rubber belting bent to afford a loop, and the ends thereof secured to the shaft. there -such beaters 'are used in machines for dehairing hogs, the service is exceedingly heavy, inasmuch as sometimes six or seven.

-It is also an object of the invention to greatly increase the resiliency of suchbeaters near the middle thereof without materially increasing the weight of the same. y

-It is a'further object of the invention to afford a construction adapted for use and embodiment in lieu of any of the beaters heretofore used in machines of the kind. without material additional expense, and to afford a construction whereby shorter lengths of the material of which the beaters are constructed may be employed to -a.dva .n"-

It is, of course, an object ofthe invention l to afford -a reinforced, resilient and looped beater Afor any purpose whatsoever that the specified.

The invention in its preferred form, `*is hereinafter more fully described.

In the drawings: Figure l is a perspective `view of a device embodying my invention, showing the opposite ends of the looped beaters on opposite sides of the shaft. Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating a very slightly modied construction, and with'the opposite .ends of each .individual looped beater secured on the same side of the shaft. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section taken longitudinally ofthe shaft at'the point of conneet-ion of the beaters therewith, as shown in Fig. 1.v Fig. vet isa similar view witlr reference to F ig.' 2.

- As shown in the drawings: 1, indicates the shaft, and referring to Figs. l and 3, 2, indicates a 'relatively short looped resilient member of rubber or canvas belting, or any suitable material having the ends bent into parallel relation and each overlapped with the corresponding ends of an oppositely disposed loop 2, 'and secured between short pieces of belting 3, which rest thereon to reinforce the same from short bending 'on the shaft, and above which is a plate 4, having a curved forward edge 5, over which the beater may be slightly bent. G, indicates the beater proper, comprising a piece of rubber or canvas belting or othersuitable material, of suitable width andply bent to form a loop and the ends which are riveted or otherwise permanently secured on each side of the bend of the loops 2, so that the bend of the loopt?, lies between the arms of the loop G, and is riveted centrally therebetween to afford a resilient arching bridge member.

A eentrifugally acting beat-er for deha-iring carcasses, embracing in combination with a rotative shaft, a looped flexible strip of fabric rigidly secured to said shaft to act centrifugally therefrom with the rota-- tion tliereofpand a strip of similar fabric secured to said shaft and to the first named strip and bent to afford a shorter loop adapted to reinforce the Erst strip and prevent short bending of the saine.
