Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 19, 1913.
Application filed November 14, 1911. Serial No. 660,198.
To all 107mm may concern Be it known that I, HARRY A. Posr, citizen of the United States, residing at Painesville, in the county of Lake and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Metal Gans or Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sheet metal cans or receptacles designed more especially to be used in work-shops and factories to receive small metallic articles or pieces adapted to be placed in the can and stored or held for use, all substantially as shown and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of the invention is to provide an exceptionally strong and durable top border or roll for the can or receptacle, particularly at the meeting joint where the walls overlap and the ends of the wired roll meet. Heretofore, this point of the can was the first to break down or tear apart, as it will be understood that cans of this description are intended for exceedingly heavy loads.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the top portion of a can in partially completed fo-rm, and Fig. 2 shows the can completed according to my invention. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of a portion of the top of the can on a line corresponding to 3 3, Fig. 5, and Fig. t is a section on line 1 -4, Fig. 5. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section corresponding to 5-5, Fig. 4.
The can as thus shown is a sheet metal embodiment throughout and the body b is overlapped at its meeting edges 2 and 3 and riveted together in the usual way or by electric spot welding if preferred. The top has its upper edge folded down outside and forming a roll 4c inclosing a reinforcing wire 5, and a substantially band like portion 6 beneath the said roll and serving the additional purpose in this instance of a hoop or band about the top of the can and adapted to materially increase its strength. However, in order to make a close joint between the meeting edges of the parts at or in the rim of the can involving` the said roll and wire and band I recess or cut the said portions back from the edge 2 the full depth of the lap of said edges, so that the immediate edge portions c and CZ of the roll and the wire therein will come into close abutting relations when the said edges 2 and 3 are permanently united as described. This of course closes the said recess but obviously leaves a weak place in the top of the can as compared with its remaining portion wherein the roll and wire and band are intact, and I therefore come to this weakened place with a special reinforcement consisting of a comparatively heavy strap or strip 10 which is curved over the roll of the can to conform therewith as plainly seen in Figs. 3 and 4 and otherwise overlaps the meeting edges 2 and 3 a sufficient width and depth to effectually overcome the weakness incident to the said jo-int and to render the can thoroughly serviceable in this particular. The said strap or plate 10 is likewise secured by rivets 12 and in this instance lies on the inside of the can but it might lie on the outside.
A peculiarity of the construction herein lies especially in the recess in the top of the can which produces a portion indicated by h which is overlapped by the opposite edge portion 3 and the band G and is secured thereto by one of the rivets l2, the said joint being four-ply or thicknesses deep at this point, when strap 10 is included. This strap is preferably made of heavier stock than the can itself.
lhat I claim is:
A can or receptacle having a sheet metal body with an overlapping seam lengthwise flush on the inside of the can and an integral roll and band beneath the roll about the top of the can, the saidroll and band at one end abutting the other end on the outer edge of the said overlapping seam, said roll having a reinforcing wire therein, and a reinforcing strap rolled over the said roll across its joint and riveted bodily over the flush inside of the can over said seam and through said band and body of the can.
In testimony whereof I afiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARRY A. POST.
