REED.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it kn'own that I, VILHELM VAGNER, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, residing at Ronsdorf, Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reeds, of which the following is a specification.
The producing tissues of great fineness of silk or other textile threads a particularly fine reed has to be used. Such reeds greatly wear the threads owing to the strong friction resulting from the narrowness of the dents. In order to avoid this inconvenience it has already been proposed to cross the dents so that they are juxtaposed only at the crossing points being arranged in two rows, the one behind the other, at t-he part above and below said crossing points whereby larger spaces for the warp-threads are produced. This arrangement of the dents of the reed avoids as far as possible the wearing of the threads through rubbing against the dents as the threads are in contact with the dents only at the crossing points when the lay is being beaten but otherwise are situated in the spaces due to the inclined position of the dents the one with regard to the others. Reeds with crossed dents have however still an inconvenience and it is the object of this invention to avoid the same.
The beating of the weft up to the web has to be effected at the crossing points of the reed and as said points are situated along a straight line a correct beating up cannot be obtained and the fabric produced becomes striped. It therefore is necessary that at the part where the beating up is effected there is produced a large uniform beating surface, which, according to this invention, is obtained by means of an indentation arranged at the crossing point of the straight dents upon the beating up surface.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. July 17, 1912.
Patented Aug. 12,1913.
serial No. 710,028.
In the accompanying drawing the invention is shown by way of example.
Figure l is a front elevation 0f the improved reed. Fig. 2 is a section of the same. Fig. 8 is aI section on line II of Fig. 1. Fig. et is a section on line II-II of Fig. l, (Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate the larger spaces for the passage of the warp threads obtained near the ends of the reed by dents being crossed.)
Reference being had to the drawings, a is the reed frame, ZJ the straight dents mounted in said frame and c the connecting bands which maintain the dents in such a position that they cross one another at the middle, larger spaces for the passage of the warp-threads being thus formed above and below the crossing points, so that the friction of the threads is avoided. In Figs. 3 and l the warp-threads are indicated by dotted lines. The dents 5 have at the crossing point an indentation d at the front surface whereby a large uniform beating up surface is formed. The crossing point can be situated at any part of the dents either at the middle as shown or near the upper or lower ends of the dents. If the crossing points are not at the middle the dents have to be lifted and lowered in the well known manner at each beating up.
I claim An improved reed comprising in combination with the frame, straight reed dents crossed near their middle parts and having at their intersections slight hollows in the front surface, said hollows forming together a large uniform beating up surface.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
