WATER HEATER.

@NITE STATES PATENT FFIQE.
JACOB ALTlVIOS, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
WATER-HEATER.
Application filed. November 25, 1912.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JACOB AL'rMos, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrater-Heaters; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in water heaters.
The object of this invention is to provide a water heater which can be cheaply manufactured, which will have a large heating surface and which will not be liable to become clogged by the deposit of scale or other foreign matter therein so as to impede the circulation of water therethrough.
My invention therefore consists in certain new and improved features of construction and combination of parts, the preferred form of which is shown in the drawings, described in the specification and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a central vertical section through a heater built of a number of my heating units. F ig. 2 is a bottom plan of a heating unit.
Again referring to the drawings 9 represents the hollow body-portion or casing of a heating unit and 10 represents the main water chamber in said body-portion. Thisy body-portion is preferably cast in a single piece and is also preferably circular in crosssection. On the bottom of said body-portion are formed a number of radially arranged ribs 17 which extend from the perimeter of the body portion toward the center thereof where they unite with each other, as at 15. These ribs may be made any depth desired according to the amount of heating surface required and in each rib is formed a 'passageway 18 and the said passageways 1S in the said ribs communicate with each other at the center of the body portion and each passageway at its opposite end communicates with t-he chamber 10 in the body portion through an opening 20 formed in the bottom of the body portion near the perimeter thereof. At the center where the said ribs unite a flange 21 extends downwardly and the said flange is provided with a screw-thread so that it is adapted to receive the end of a water supply pipe.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 12,1913. Serial No. 733,263.
The ribs 17 and the body portion are cast integral thereby doing away with all necessity of packing of joints and providing an absolutely water-tight construction. In the body portion 9 are formed a plurality of vertically arranged flues In practice one unit may be used alone or a number of units may be coupled together, one above the other, as shown in Fig. 1. Vdhen av number of units are so used it is preferable to inclose the units in a suitable casing or jacket, shown at 25, said jacket being open at the bottom and provided with an outlet 2G at the top for the escape of the spent lgas and fumes.
It will be readily understood that the water entering the supply pipe Q2 will pass outwardly through the passageways 18 in the ribs l17' to the perimeter of the bodyportion and will then pass up through the openings Q0 in the bottom of the body-portion into the chamber 9 in the body-portion and will then pass out through the opening 11 in the top of the body-portion. The heat strikes against the bottom and sides of the ribs and also against the bottom of the body portion so that a comparatively large heating surface is directly exposed to the effects of the heat and the hot air also passes up through the flues in the body-portion heating the walls of said flues and the said flues add considerable to the heating surface of the device.
What I claim is,-
1. In a water heater, a hollow body-portion provided with an opening in the top thereof, radially arranged ribs formed on the bottom of said body-portion and extending from the center of the body-portion to the perimeter thereof, said ribs having passageways, which said passageways communicate with each other at the center of the body-portion and with the interior of the body-portion at the perimeter thereof.
2. In a water heater,.a hollow body-portion circular in cross-section and provided with an opening in the top at the center thereof, radial ribs formed on the bottom of said body-portion and extending from the center of the body-portion to the perimeter thereof, said ribs having passageways, which said passageways communicate with each other at the center of the body-portion and wit-h the interior of the body-portion at the perimeter thereof and an annular flange formed on said ribs at the center of the body-portion extending downwardly therefrom.
3. In a water heater, a hollow body-portion circular in cross-section and provided with an opening in the top at the center thereof, an annular exterior flange formed around said opening, radially arranged ribs formed on the bottoml of said body-portion and extending from the perimeter to the center thereof where they unite with each other, said ribs being provided with passageways, which said passageways communicate with each other at the center of the body-portion and with the interior of the body-portion at the perimeter thereof and an annular flange formed on said ribs at the center of the bodyportion and extending downwardly therefrom.
4. In a water heater, a hollow body-portion provided with an opening in the top thereof, radially arranged ribs formed on the bottom of said body-portion and extending from the Center of said body-portion to the perimeter thereof, said ribs having passageways, which said passageways communicate with each other at the center of the body-portion and with the interior of the body-portion at the perimeter thereof, and vertically arranged fines formed in said body-portion, for the purpose set forth.
5. In a water heater, a hollow body-portion provided with an opening in the top thereof, radially arranged ribs formed on the bottom of said body-portion integral therewith and extending from the center of 35 the body-portion to the perimeter thereof, said ribs having passageways, which said passageways communicate with each other at the center of the body-portion and with the interior of the loodyportion at the pe- 40 rimeter thereof and vertically arranged fines arranged in said body-portion, the walls of said lines being formed integral with said body-portion, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I sign the fore- 45 going specification, in the presence of two witnesses.
