The object of this invention is to provide an impro-ved means for starting internal combustion engines and is particularly applicable to that class of automobile" engines which make use of a rotary or reciprocatory sleeve valve.
rlhe feature ot the invention lies in the adaptation or use of suitable passageways in the movable sleeve or valve of an internal combustion engine, whereby compressed air, or other gas under pressure, may be admitted to that. cylinder which has entered upon its power stroke,` the piston forced outward, the crank shaft revolved and the engine caused to take up its regular cycle otl events.
The nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims:
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section through one cylinder of au internal combustion engine making use ot' this invention, with portions broken away. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section on the line 2 2 of F 1, with portions broken away and portions omitted, showing the gas connections. Fig. 8 shows a modilied form ot' the invention.

As shown in the drawings, the valves are double ported and have diainctrically opposed openings through the walls thereofwhich will mate with the ports 15 and 1G in a valve casing 17. These ports are spaced apart in such relation as to bring aboutthe desired cycle ot' events in the engine. rlhe valve may be caused to rotate by any desired means and at any desired speed.
1t is well known that in multiple-cylinder internal combustion engines almost invariably the engine, when Stopped, Will come to rest with the pistons at about mid stroke and should a gas under pressure be admitted to .that cylinder in which the piston has started upon its power stroke, the piston will be forced down, the crank shaft caused to rotate, and 'the regularmcycle of events will be taken up by the engine. For this purpose a gas pipe 18 leading from any desired source of compressed gas, is tapped into the valve casing 17 at desired intervals and the fuel inlet valve is provided with grooves or depressions 19 in the outer suriace thereof, one end of said grooves 19 connecting with a port 15 leading to the cylindcr 10 and the other end of said groove 19 adapted to make contact with the inner end of the, gas connection as the valve is rotated. Thus it will bc seen that with the engine in the idle position, should compressed gas be turned into the pipe 18, it will pass by way of the grooves 19 and port 15 into that cylinder 1.0 in which the piston has started upon its power stroke, force said pistou downward and cause the starting of the engine in the manner before described.
In all of those 'starters on the market so far as known, it is necessary that a complex valve mechanism be operated for each starting mechanism. lilith this invention, however, itwill be necessary to have but one simple valve in the gas line for causing the stopping of the flow of gas from the source of supply to the valve casing.
A simple modification of this invention, and not departing whatever from the spiritot the invention, lies in substituting a plurality of double rotary valves for the one here shown. lt is not desired, therefore, to limit myself to the specific wnstruction shown. i Y
By another modication of this invention a` sepai'ate passageway 21 is provided through the tubular'valve which would connect the source of compressed gas with each cylindcn when the pistons therein have entered upon their power stroke.
It is self evident that this invention can .be applied with equal facility upon an engine making use of an oscillatory as Well as upon a rotary valve construction. In the preceding description and in the accompanying claims by the word gas 7 is meant a lsingle gas or a gaseous mixture such as air or other mixture or a union of two or more gases whether inert or active.`
I claim as my invention: 1. In an .internal combustion engine, the

v'ports in said valve for controlling the inletto and the exhaust from said cylinder, and a casing for said fuel sleeve valve having a port vin communication with the combustion chamber of said cylinder, of means for supplying gas under pressure to said fuel valve, said fuel valve having-a passageway located therein adapted as said sleeve valve is rotated to register with said gas supplying mea-ns and with said port to said cylinder, whereby gas under pressure may be introduced into'said cylinder on the power stroke for actuating said pistonand starting tlie engine.
2. In an internal combustion engine, the combination with a plurality of cylinders, a piston in each of said cylinders, a rotary fuel valve for said cylinders, an exhaust passage-within said fuel valve, ports in said introduced into said cylinders on the power f stroke, the piston therein forced' outward and the engine started.
