CIRCUIT-BREAKER.
. Y Specification of Letters Patent. Pat t d 12 1913 Application filed June 30,1909. Serial No. 505,113.'
TojalZ whomz't mag 9 m. 'Be it knownthat I, WALTER E. SANDS, a citizen bf the United States, residing in the county of-Iiings, State of New York, have invented" 'a certain new and useful Circuit- Breaker, ofwhich the following is a specification.
The object I circuit breaker which. will be always in.- closed whether in. open or closed position, which cannot be tampered with, but which can bereadily L opened by one having authority, which will not be short circuited by water and wi1lnot be injured by fire. These and further objects will appear from the following specification and accompanying drawings, considered'together or separately.
In the drawings Figure '1 is a front ele- Zo'v ation lof a circuit breaker embodying-my invention; Fig. 2 is'a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, showing the circiut breaker in closed pbsition in solid lines and open. position in dotted lines; Fig. 3 is a section on the 2:; line 3 of Figs. land 2, showing the circuit brea er in closed position; and Fig. 4: is a view s' "lar toFig. 3 of .a slightly modified forn l b f device, showing the breaker in open position.
In all of nated by the same reference characters.
The apparatus comprises a box A of suitable material, such as sheet steel, having l sides 1,11, a top 2 and a bottom 3. Accord-' r ing to {one form of my invention, the box ma have a back 4: (as shown in Fig. 3), but 4 suc back is not necessary and may be omitted (as-shown in Fig.4). The element 5 1s hinged at 6'to the bottom of the box, and is secured 'in closed position by any suitable 'devide, such as a padlock 7 It will appear from Fig. 2 that the element 5-when in closed position-is inclined and that the top.
2 of} the box is much longer than the bottom 3. The sides 1, 1 are formed to accommodate the inclined position of the element 5 and the longer top than bottom, so that a complete inclosure is produced. The forward portion of the top 2 is curved (as shown in .Fig. 2).-
The box is provided with ears 8, by means of which itmay be attached'to the gswitchboard or other support. The operating portions of the switch are located within the box and comprise the contact memhers in the form of clips'9, which are fixed 'boroiigh of Brooklyn, city of New York,-
have in view is to pi'oduce athe views like parts are desigmember 11 is hinged at 12 adjacent to the hmges v 6 of the element 5., The movable member 11 is preferably made ofsheet material, as shown, and is provided withflanges at top, bottom and sides. Said member, as
other suitable insulating material 13, to which the plates 10, 10 are secured. The cllps 9, 9 are shown as in engagement with aslab 14 of suitable insulating materiaL.
In the modification of the invention in which there is no back 1, the sides 1, 1* are flanged and engage with the slab 14,thus
ing member 11 is adapted to-be moved to open and close the breaker, such member swinging on the hinge 12. Any suitable means may be employed for swinging the member 11, but I have illustrated manual actuating means, such as a handle 15, 'secured to the arm. This handle .may be grasped through an opening 16 formed in the element 5. The opening shown is rectangular and of considerable size. It is apparent that the size and shape of the opening may be modified without-departing from the spirit of the invention.
The member 11 is provided with a staple 17 which is adapted to come in juxtaposition with a staple 18 on the element 5, and these two ears may be secured together by a padlock'or other locking device (not shown). The two plates 10, 10 are connected together by a fuse'19 in the usual manner. The switch may beopened by removing the padlock 7 and dropping the element 5. The member llcan then be swung forward and dropped, exposing the clips 9, 9, the plates 10, 10 and the fuse 19. a In accordance with'the provisions of the patent statutes, I have described the principle' of my. invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have it understood that theapparatus shown is merely illustrative and that the invention can be 'carriedout in other ways.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by.Let-' ters Patent, is:
1. A switch comprising a box, contact closing in'the back of thebox. The swing- I to the back, and the contact-members in the v formof plates 10, 10. c The plates 10, 10 are supported upon a movable member 11. This is shown, is lined with a slab of slate or members supported therein, a movable memi ber carried by and snugly fitting the inside of said box, and contact members carried by said movable member and cooperating with said first named contact members.
2. A switch comprising a box having a;
cover with an opening therein, a pivoted member supported Within said box and snugly fitting it and operated thro-ugh the opening in said cover, and codperaiing contact members carried by said box and by said pivoted member.
A switch comprising fixed contact members, movable contact members coiipersting therewith, a pivoted member on which said last named contact members sire supported, and a box surroundin said parts and snugly engaging said pivoted member whereby the contact members are always inclosed Whether the switch is open or closed.
This specification signed and witnessed 20 this 15th day of June, 1909.
WALTER E. SANDS.
