key board unit, the second row of lamps with the second row of contacts, and so on as shown in Fig. 1.
Upon the frame 3 is, rigidly mounted guides 8, which are adapted to facilitate. the placing of said frame inthe holder 9*.
The operation is as follows: The switch 13 is thrown into engagement, which closes the circuit and. operates motor 8', which transmits motion to cams 6 by means chains '7, which cam action in conjunction with compression springs 5 reciprocates the frame 3 hich contains a series of blocks 10, which throws them into and out of engage ment with the spring contacts 12, thereby alternately making and breaking the electrical connection between the units and sign board. The intermittent operation of the several units with their respective frafnes of character blocks in relation to each other, is controlled by the proper timing of the cams 6. The frames are grounded to cross bars 9 which are electrically connected to main circuit as shown in Fig. 1.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction and arrangement of parts, I do not wish to be limited to this particular. construction and arrangement, but desire to include in the purview of my invention, the construction and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appcndiid claims. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In an electric sign, the combination with a formcontrolled switch boar'd provided with a series of electric contacts, of an open framc-lmlder parallel with and mounted to move toward and from said switch board, a frame adapted to-be inserted into the frame-holder through one open side thereof, means for retaining the frame removablv'in its holder, and character blocks inserted removahly in said frame with their characters on their inner sides next to said contacts.
2. The combination with a switch board provided with a series ofelcet-ric contacts on its outer face, of an open reciprocating frame-holder, meansf or moving the frame holder toward and front the contacts, an open frame mounted removably in the frame-holder, and character blocks mounted removahly in the frame with their characters exposed through the open sides of the frameholder and frame .for engagement with said contacts; 7
3. The combination with a switch board provided with a series of'electric contacts on its outer side, of an open reciprocating frameholder parallel with the outer side of the board supports on the board for the ends of the "frame-holder holding it at all times in parallelism with the board, means for reciprocating the. frame-holder, an open frame held rcmovably in the said holder, and character blocks mounted reinovahly in the said frame with their characters exposed through the open sides of the frame'holder and frame for engagement with the saidcontacts.
4. The combination with a switch board providcdwvith aseries of contacts, of an open frame-holder parallel with the board. hangers hinged to the board andto the ends of the frame-holder to permit the latter to reciprocate in parallelism with the'contact face of the board, a driven shaft parallel with the frame-holder and provided with cams engaging the hinged hangers to reciprocate the frame-holder, an open frame removably inserted into the frame holder through the outer open side thereof, means for retaining the fame, in its holder, and character blocks removahly mounted in said frame and removable therewith from the holder; the characters on the blocks being exposed through the open sides of the frame and the frame-holder for engagement with the contacts.
5, The combination with aswitch board provided with a series of contacts, of an open frame-holder, means for moving the frame-holder toward and from the contacts, a removable open frame inserted in the frame-holder through the outer open side thereof and provided with upper and lower channels, and character blocks movable endwise into and out of said channels with their characters exposed through the open sides of the frame-holder and frame forcngagement with said contacts.
The combination with a switch board provided with a series of contacts, ofan open character block frame-holder parallel with the series of contacts and comprising 11 per and lower parallel bars, hangers hinged to the board at their"- outer ends and hinged at their inner ends to the ends of the frame-holder; said hangers having depending arms, springs pressing the frameholder and hangers out ardly. and a rotary shaft having end cams engaging said ilepending arms.
7. The combination with an electric sign board bestudded with electric light bulbs, of aform controlled switch-board having a 'iluralit-y of groups of contacts electrically connected to said lights, a separate character block frame holder parallel with every group of contacts, and mounted to move toard and, from the respective groups of contacts, and gearing for successively actuating the said fI'HITIO-llOld-KTS.
8. Thecombination with an electric sign board bestudded with electric light bulbs, of i Ward and from tha respectiva grmzps 0 block frame-holder pzzmliei awry group of. contacts, and meunted to mawa t0 contac-Us, pa s-anal shafts 6m for 8V0? frame-holder and providefi with actuating the same sflccessively, 2x115. gem connecting the said shaft.
, 9.
