These cylinders are rigidly support-ed upon a suitable frame 9 uprisiirg from a. base 9*, which base forms a, bearing support for the crenlr shaft 10 of the compressor. To this crank shaft 10 the pistons oi the low and first intermediate'cylinders are connected by a pitman rod 11 and the pistons of the high and second intermediate cylinders are connectedby a pitmah'i'od 12, the connectionscf these rods 11 and 1'2 with the crank shaft 3L0 being such that. as thelow pistons start from the limit/of theirmove' ment, the high and second intermediate compressor pistons are about half Way ofi their downward movement.
The motor: which is. herein shown for driving the crank shaft 10 of the compressor is denoted by 13 and its shaft 14 is connected to the crank shaft lOthro'ugh a fly wheel 15, as follows sleeve 1'6 is keyed on to the end or" the crar shz'iit 10, which sleeve is proyided with flange 17 overleppin' the centrsl porti l8 bf the fly Wheel 15. A circulation of Waiter is insurcel Within the water tc'nl: by providing circulating pump 59 clriven, directly from the crank shaft 10 of the compressor. This pump has an inlet pipe 61 leading from soitehle source of Water supply, not shown, herein. and a discharge pipe leeeling several branches to the water tonic The tank further provided "with an overflow pipe 62 therein. The base 9* tended. as shown at 9*. forming o. su'plaort for the motor 13. The bottom 20 of the water tank is rigidly fixed to the frame 9, the frame 9 is rigidly fixed to its hose 9* and. the first and. second intermediate cylinclers ere fixed rigidly to the bottom 20 of the tank. This arrangement of the parts serves to produce a. very strong and compact machine capable of successfully withstandinqthc greet strain to which it is subjected when raising sir to in operation, the air as it passes into the low pressure cylinder 1 through the piston inlet mlrc 3:3, is cooled as it travels along the passage 96 at; the side of the first intermediate cylinder for the reason that the Willis oi"? the passage are exposed to thewete r Within the look. On the compression stroke, the air within the low pressure cylinder is forced post the discharge valve 2-? into the low pressure head 30. This air head is made of large capacity and is located within the 'Willltll? tool: so as to permit the coil to he made snliiciontly small in diameter to secure a more Qll CCtlXL; cooling surface. heretofore been. s'vmeil, this low. hood is of sulliciont capacity the air compressedin the low 5 imlcrfthns giving the coil 31 i time of a. revolution to carry air to the first intermediate cylimicr. Thisn'ill :WOltl the necessity of on excess of air seem to force the air tl'irougrh the soirl co1l. Tlhc oir sore t. eomyilct asses from the coil 31 into the l'noisture ooh P so that dry air may be taken into the first intermediate cylinder 3. The air then passes arrangement of the parts-as herein shown from the tank 32 through the pipe 33, inlet valve at? and passage l5 into the first intermediate cylinder. On the compression stroke, the air is forced from this cylinder through the passage past the dischargevalve e9 into the coil 36 and from thence it passes through the inlet valve 37 and pas' sage 46 into the second intermediate cylinder 5. 911 the compression stroke, the air is forced through the port 46 past the discharge valve 38 into the coil 39 and from thence past the inlet valve 40 into the discharge head 57 of the high pressure cylinder 7. On the compression stroke the air is forced from the cylinder through the discharge valve ll into the coil 42 and from thence it passes into the high pressure moisture collecting tank 43. From this tank the air passes to any suitable receiver, not shown herein. tween the back of the second intermediate cylinder 5 and the coil 36 through the passage 69. and pipe 63, so that any .air which may leak past the pistons in the second intermediate cylinder and high pressure cylinderasses into the said coil 36.
It will be seen that in the construction and and described, ,the low "pressure and high pressure discharge heads arelocated within the water tank Where they may be effectively cooled. lt willalso be seen that the outer plate 58 of the high pressure discharge head and the outer plate 29 of the low pressure discharge head be removed. without removing the trip 22 0f the tank or in any way disturbing are other parts of the machine. It will also lee seen that by. locating the discharge heads "for the first-land second intermediate cylinders below the Water tank andv v I the valve casingaaccess to the inlet discl xarge valvesof both of these cylin ersmay T be readily obtained Without disturbing the other parts or the apparatus. While I'have shown and described an air compressor, itisto be understood that the machine may be 'used for compressing. any other fluid without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, "*TWhat I claim is:
